A WORD FROM FR. JOHN… This week by happy coincidence, we will be celebrating the feast days of two of our three churches. Today, we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as the feast of Corpus Christi. Although not sharing those exact titles, what is the Blessed Sacrament except the Body and Blood of Christ. In our gospel today, Jesus calls all of his disciples to take and eat his body and to take and drink his blood. Through the mystery of the Eucharist, that is made present again for us each and every Sunday, each and every time we participate in the Mass. We celebrate this feast as the Church's official act of homage and gratitude to Christ, who by instituting the Holy Eucharist gave to the Church her greatest treasure. Holy Thursday, assuredly, marks the anniversary of the institution, but the commemoration of the Lord's passion that very night suppresses the rejoicing proper to the occasion. Today's observance, therefore, accents the joyous aspect of Holy Thursday. Hopefully, we will all have an opportunity to extend our celebration beyond our participation at Mass and reception of Holy Communion. For as we are called to do at the end of every Mass, we are sent out to live the Eucharist in our lives and our world. Our Eucharistic Procession today is a tangible expression of that mission. Hopefully, you have planned some way to participate through the various opportunities offered. Check out the flyers on the bulletin boards in our churches for details. If you don’t have a chance to come and join in the celebratory feasting on goodies at the end, then find an opportunity to feast on something good in honor of the day wherever you find yourself.

On Tuesday, June 5, we celebrate the feast of St. Boniface. Boniface was born circa 675 in England. He studied in English Benedictine monasteries before being ordained around age 30, and traveling to Europe, where as a missionary, he converted pagan peoples in present-day Germany and the Netherlands. In his role as a bishop and archbishop, he also worked on church reforms, under the protection of Charles Martel, the Carolingian ruler of the Franks and father of Charlemagne and Pepin. After returning to missionary work, Boniface, along with his companions, was killed by pagan tribespeople in Frisia on June 5, 754, at the approximate age of 80. The large image of St. Boniface above the altar of our church records his martyrdom in seeking to spread the gospel by showing a sword thrust through a book into his heart. Boniface, deemed the "apostle to the Germans," is regarded as the patron saint of brewers and tailors, as well as of Germany. It is not surprising then that St. Boniface was chosen as the patron of our church, which was comprised of many German immigrants. Hopefully, many of you will be able to join us for daily Mass this Tuesday as we celebrate this important feast day. If you are unable to join us, please consider marking this significant day through prayer and feasting. In addition to seeking St. Boniface’s continued intercession on behalf of our parish, you might prepare a special meal or dessert in honor of the feast day.

We extend our congratulations, best wishes and prayers to those who identify with these two churches. Those who have come before us practiced good stewardship of their God-given gifts of time, talent and treasure to build and maintain these church communities. May we honor their legacy by continuing that good stewardship as we strive to carry out the mission that God calls us to in our present day. Yours,

Fr. John

RENEWING AND REFRESHING ADULT FAITH

Experience of a Eucharistic Procession Shared One of the amazing experiences of last November’s National Catholic Youth Conference was the Eucharistic Procession. Held on the first night of the convention, it set the tone for the pilgrimage. Thousands of teenagers came to a standstill as our Lord passed by. Two of our young parishioners share their experience in this week’s column. James Frisa: Throughout my experience at NCYC, I had the joy of experiencing many people my age who practice the same faith. It was very fulfilling knowing that there are over 25,000 kids just like me around the country, and to put them in one stadium together was very powerful. One of the events that truly moved me as a Catholic was during the Eucharistic procession. The huge number of priests and youth walking through the streets was very powerful and inspired not only practicing Catholics but also people walking down the street and watching in awe. Matthew Frisa: What stuck with me most during the pilgrimage is how unique the experience was during times of silence. There were approximately 25,000 kids around my age, and we all were silent for around 30 minutes. After reflecting on it, I realized how important silence is. It really meant a lot to me and has changed me for the better. I highly recommend everyone to just have 10 minutes of silence every day and just reflect; it can be very helpful. These young men point out the importance of the procession as a witness and silence that accompanies it. Ours will be a festive procession, but there will be moments of prayer at our Churches. Here, we place our needs at the altar, reflect on God’s goodness and call in our life, and ask for an answer to our prayers. —Fr. Matthew
