KRISTALLNACHT OBSERVANCE – We have received an invita-tion from Rabbi Charles Popky and the membership of the White Meadow Temple to join them in an interfaith program to be held at the White Meadow Temple (153 White Meadow Road) on Sunday, No-vember 6th at 7 p.m. The program will be in observance of Kristall-nacht, an organized Nazi pogrom marking the first deportation of Jews to concentration camps. North Jersey HaZamir, part of an international teen vocal group, will present choral selections appropriate for this occasion, following which we will view a documentary film, “Margarit-NotA23029,” produced by Peppy Margolis, Director of Cultural Outreach T Raritan Valley Community College. There are some disturbing scenes from the Holocaust in the film; therefore, we recommend this program for adults and teens of at least high school age who are informed about its content in advance. Both the producer and Margit Feldman, the main character of this film, will be attending and will participate in the discussion that follows. Ms. Feldman was born on the same day of the same year as Ann Frank and both were sent to the same concentration camp; however, unlike Frank, Ms. Feldman survived. Following the program coffee and dessert will be served. Father Zig will be attending. Please notify the parish office if you will be attending no later than Thursday, October 27th so that we can notify the temple of how many of our parishioners will be in atten-dance.

My Dear Parishioners, We mark the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. The Scripture texts for this Sunday once again bring our attention to the poor. This is a common theme for the prophets as well as the Evangelist Luke. In today’s Gospel the Lord Jesus tells the parable of the “Rich Man and Poor Lazarus.” The

nameless rich man is indifferent to the plight of his neighbor. So wrapped up in himself, he does not see the suffering of the one who is just outside his door and is in need of his help. Although the rich man does not see, the Lord sees all and turns the tables so that in eternity Lazarus suffers no more and the rich man is now in torment. This Sunday’s Scriptures have a lot to tell us. We are reminded to be on guard for complacency and indifference. These will lead us to destruction after a life of selfishness. God is calling us to become mindful of the poor and responsive to their needs. Failure to help them will bring us to the place of torment. Two weeks from today I and my two priests, along with all the priests of the diocese, will deliver the homily in conjunction with THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL. The APPEAL is a wonderful opportunity for us to demonstrate our faith by supporting the work of Catholic Charities which so many people look to for help. The primary beneficiaries of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal are the agencies which assist the poor, the disabled, the elderly and the suffering. That is why we are encouraged to participate in the appeal and not to be indifferent. Every parishioner can give something according to their means, no one should exempt them-selves as the rich man did in the parable the Lord Jesus told in today’s Gospel. In the second lection for this Sunday we read a portion of the First Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy in which he writes,”Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called…” The newly canonized Saint Teresa of Kolkata is among the Saints who were attentive to the plight of the suffering and worked to relieve their distress. By doing so they are now glorified in eternal life because in Jesus’ Name they engaged themselves in service to the poor and lowly. We are encouraged to compete well and to guard against indifference, the great sin which brings destruction and chaos into the world. The BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL is the op-portunity you have to join your brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Paterson to support the work of the Catholic Church, a work which was begun by the Apostles and supported by the first Christians as documented in “Acts of the Apostles”. May God bless you! Father Zig

580-St. Cecilia

From 1633 to 1637 sixteen martyrs shed their blood out of love for Christ in the city of Nagasaki, Japan. They in-cluded members and associates of the Order of Preachers, nine priests, two religious, two virgins and three lay peo-ple, one of whom was Lawrence Ruiz, the father of a family from the Philippine Islands. All had, at different times and under varying circumstances, preached the Christian faith in the Philippines, Formosa and Japan. They mani-fested the universality of the Christian religion and sowed the seed of future missionaries and converts. Lawrence devoted himself to assisting the Dominicans in their mission activities demonstrating both selfless devotion and courage in often difficult and hostile situations. As a skilled mariner, Lawrence was asked by the Dominicans to aid them in making a secret voyage to Japan. As the island nation experienced persecution, Lawrence and the Domini-cans were aware of the risk they were taking but they were concerned about bringing the sacraments to the Catholics residing in Japan. Their vessel was in a severe storm at sea and was shipwrecked near Okinawa. They were arrested by the Japanese authorities and subject to extreme torture, lingering for many days in abject agony before being put to death. Pope John Paul II canonized Lorenzo Ruiz on October 18, 1987. The Holy Father noted that Saint Lorenzo Ruiz came from the great Filipino people, a nation of tremendous faith and love for Christ the Savior. PRAYER: Lord God, You are the strength of all the Saints. You called Saint Lawrence Ruiz and his Companions to eternal life through the cross. Grant us, through their intercession, perfect fidelity to keep the faith until our death. AMEN Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
