A Dream Come True!
Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 23, 2014
From the Pastor November 23, 2014 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
34th
[and last] Sunday in Ordinary Time
‘Christ in the Breadline’ is the work of Fritz Eichenberg, a German Jew who immigrated to the USA in 1933, was baptized and died a Quaker, but assisted Dorothy Day, a Catholic social justice worker, in her ministry to the poor. It unites today’s Preface reflection and today’s Gospel which warns: whatever we do - or fail to do to the least of Christ’s brothers and sisters, we do - or fail to do for Him! [C.f. Matthew 25:31-46]
The Preface has two parts; the first celebrates how Christ reigns most supremely from His Cross, through which He offered Himself for our ransom and salvation. The second part uses seven [the biblical number of perfection] attributes to describe God’s Kingdom: truth, life, holiness, grace, justice, love and peace. In the 1965 Second Vatican Council’s ‘Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World:’ Gaudium
Et Spes [Joys and Hopes] the Council Fathers quoted today’s Preface as they called a world so recently wounded by the inhumane horrors of WWII to make God and His Kingdom the goal of all earthly endeavors. Here’s that Preface:
Preface: Christ, King of the Universe
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
For you anointed your Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, with the oil of gladness
as eternal Priest and King of all creation, so that, by offering himself on the altar of the Cross
as a spotless sacrifice to bring us peace, he might accomplish the mysteries of human redemption
and, making all created things subject to his rule, he might present to the immensity of your majesty
an eternal and universal kingdom, a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love and peace.
And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, and with all the hosts
and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim:
Will ‘Thy Kingdom’ Ever Come? Yes, but only in God’s good time. The Bible assures us, as I wrote in my All Soul’s [11/02/2014] bulletin article: “I saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. [Revelation 21:12] Since God’s Kingdom is a gift only God can make the Kingdom come! Yet we’re not off the hook!
For God gives us the tools and strength, the plans and designs we need so that - through US - God can build His Kingdom on earth. While we will never reach perfection in this life, perfection MUST be our goal! And Jesus calls us to build from the bottom up: by securing the seven attributes of God’s Kingdom for the least among us - as Pope Francis often says. Here are a few words about each ‘Kingdom attribute.’
Truth. To Pilate’s sarcastic question, “What is Truth?” [John 18:38] Jesus said He is the Truth we must hear and obey to enter God’s Kingdom.
Life. Since Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life” [John 14:6]; anything contrary to Christ’s words or example is the wrong way and a lie that leads to death!
Holiness. Our first Pope said: “As he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in every aspect of your conduct.” [1 Peter1:15] So God’s Kingdom cannot come until all are truly Christ-like.
Grace. As the Lord said to Saint Paul: “My grace is sufficient for you.” [2 Corinthians 12:9] God’s Kingdom can only grow if we use every grace or gift God’s gives us, especially the Bible and its Commandments, His Church and its Sacraments. Those who, like Adam and Eve, go it alone or ignore God’s plan, suffer the same fate!
Justice & Love. The Bible often equates love with mercy, making mercy the ultimate sign of love; it also says God perfectly balances justice and mercy or love - and so must our laws and actions if we hope to build up God’s Kingdom.
Peace. The elusive gift of peace is a natural by-product of the previous six attributes we’ll only enjoy peace by implementing these attributes.
May God bless us all with a safe, happy Thanksgiving - and a blessed Advent!
With God’s love and my prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder

FIRST RECONCILIATION
for our FIRSTCOMMUNICANTS
TODAY, November 23rd
4:00 p.m.
all must arrive
NO LATER THAN 4:45 pmThe entire family should prepare
themselves to receive God’s forgiveness;
- as the service is in progress, the priests will be available
to hear adult confessions
- the First Penance children wait to the end to go to
confession
- they should be introduced to the priest-penitent by a
parent, who says:
“Father N., this is my son/daughter, N.”
- the parent then walks away to assure confidentiality
The ‘dress’ is ‘Sunday Best’ and the service lasts about 35-
40 minutes, plus time for confessions. All are free to go
after celebrating Reconciliation. Please review the Act
of Contrition [Prayer of Sorrow] with your child. And
don’t forget to use the two examinations of conscience
distributed at the sign-in table at Mass; one is for the
children – and the other is for all older children and
adults who wish to go to confession that day.
Please note: the First Penance Service is NOT a Mass and does
NOT fulfill the Sunday Obligation to attend weekly Mass.
FROZEN TURKEY COLLECTIONFrozen turkeys will be collected THIS Monday, November24th in the Narthex of Church from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.Please make sure the turkeys are completely frozen - wecannot accept thawed turkeys for health safety reason.

Let the Church of Saint Mary help you ‘Become Rich By Becoming Poor.’
This seemingly contradictory title or conundrum is firmly rooted in the Sacred Scriptures:
“For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that for your sake He became poor although He was rich,
so that by His poverty you might become rich.” [2 Corinthians 8:9]
As followers of Jesus Christ, Christians must also enable others - and ourselves in the process! - to become rich by giving away or sharing what God has entrusted to us. The daily suggestions in this year’s Advent Calendar offer simple ways to ‘Become Rich By Becoming Poor.’ As spiritual writers often note, we gain so much by giving away; we are enriched by sharing; we are blessed in the act of blessing others! Will you ‘Become Rich By Becoming Poor ’ this Advent?
Rev. Michael J. Kreder, Pastor
Blessing & Lighting of an Advent Wreath The leader leads all in the Sign of the Cross:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Blessed be God, who enlightens every heart. Blessed be God for ever.
My brothers and sisters, in this holy time of Advent, we open our hearts to God's love as we prepare to welcome Christ into our lives and homes. The candles of this wreath remind us that Jesus Christ came to conquer the darkness of sin and to lead us into the light of His glorious kingdom. Let us listen to God’s Word. (Another person proclaims the Scripture reading.)
A reading from the first Letter of Saint John (1 John 1:5-7)
Now this is the message that we have heard from him
and proclaim to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.
If we say, "We have fellowship with him," while we continue to walk in darkness,
we lie and do not act in truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light,
then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of his Son Jesus
cleanses us from all sin. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Universal Prayer Others offer the intentions after the leader begins:
Christ came to bring us salvation and has promised to come again. Let us pray that we may be ready to welcome Him. Our response is, "Come, Lord Jesus."
* That the keeping of Advent may open our hearts to God's love; we pray:
* That the light of Christ may penetrate the darkness of sin; we pray:
* That this wreath may constantly remind us to prepare for Christ’s coming; we pray:
* That the Christmas season may fill us with peace and joy as we strive to follow the example of Jesus; we pray:
Other intentions may be added, then the leader says:
With longing for the coming of God's Kingdom, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father...
Then the leader continues:
Lord God, your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of sin and ignorance. Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candle[s] of this wreath; may their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever. Amen. (Light the first candle; each week an additional candle is lighted.)
All make the Sign of the Cross as the leader prays:
May the light of Christ lead us to the joy of his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
Advent Prayers Before Meals
Let us pray. Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive, from your goodness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. - or -
God, the Father of mercies, you willed your Son to take flesh, in order to give life back to us. Bless these, your gifts, with which we are about to nourish our bodies, so that, receiving new strength, we may wait in watchfulness for the glorious coming of Christ. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Advent Prayers After Meals
Let us pray. We give you thanks for all your benefits, O Almighty God, who lives and reigns for ever; and may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. - or-
V. Let us live soberly, justly, and devoutly in this world.
R. As we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Let us pray. We thank you, all-powerful God, for your kindness in refreshing our bodies by these gifts from your providence. Strengthen us, we pray, not only in body, but also in spirit. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL
It is difficult to imagine children and their
families spending Thanksgiving out on the street
without a safe and warm place to sleep. Sadly,
this would be a harsh reality for many in our
community if it were not for the assistance provided by
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark. For over
100 years, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark
has provided relief to so many families within the four
counties it serves. Catholic Charities operates seven shelters
which provide a safe, caring, respectful and dignified refuge
for our homeless brothers and sisters. Your support of the
Annual Appeal makes a meaningful difference in the lives of
those served by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of
Newark. Through your generosity to the AAA, Catholic
Charities is able to continue their tradition of compassion
and concern for each individual who walks through the door.
If you have made a sacrificial gift to the AAA THIS YEAR, Saint
Mary will ONLY receive credit for your gift if the amount
pledged is paid by DECEMBER 31ST. Anything received after
the 31st, the Archdiocese receives your credit and NOT the
parish.9
SUMMER
RELIGIOUS FORMATION
The Summer Religious Formation Program is a privilege. All
families wishing to be considered for the Summer Program need
to attend Mass on a regular basis. The only way for us to verify
regular attendance at Mass is via the weekly envelopes; this is a
normal procedure in most parishes for determining active
participation. Please note no set amount or any amount is
required. The use of the envelopes will be verifying attendance
only. Attendance records will be verified for participation in the
SRF Program. God monitors your attendance always!
PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR PARISH
IN YOUR WILL
Saint Mary Church is most grateful to those who gift our parish
through their will and with memorialized gifts. Those wishing to
donate liturgical items [chalices, vestments, etc.] should contact
the Parish Office BEFORE purchasing anything. Often, we are
not able to use donated items because they do not match our sets,
are duplicates of what we already have. We will gladly suggest
what we need - and will definitely use.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
As the Thanksgiving Season approaches, we all have muchto be thankful for. We all realize that there are many whohave less than us. What better way to show your gratitudefor your blessings than to help those in need. One way isto give a small quantity of your time to local charitableorganizations. One such organization is your local Knightsof Columbus Council. Regina Council 1688 of the Knightsis asking all Catholic men over 18 to consider joining us inour charitable endeavors. You will be surprised by howlittle time is required to give back as a member of theKnights of Columbus. Please contact any of the manyKnights of Saint Mary parish for more information orcontact Bill Teresavage at (201) 981-3031 or by email [email protected]. You can also learn more about theKnights of Columbus at either of the many websites suchas kofc.org or njkofc.org.
OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KINGFirst Reading: Ezekiel 34:11-12, 15-17
This passage beautifully describes how the Lord God, as
shepherd, will tend his flock. He will rescue those who are
lost, bring back those who stray, heal the sick, and “pasture”
all.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28
Paul once again stresses the significance of Christ’s
resurrection in the total divine plan, emphasizing that
Christ’s rising means that those who believe in him will also
rise after death. Christianity, he argues, is meaningless if it
concerns only this life on earth. In the end, even death will
be destroyed, and “God will be all in all.”
Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46
With words both poetic and vivid, Jesus tells the disciples
that since he is present in all people, whatever they do to
“one of my least brothers” they do to him; and whatever
they fail to do to his “least,” they fail to do to him.© 1999 Bon Venture Services, Inc.
