End Domestic Violence NOW!
Domestic Violence Hot-
line

Domestic Violence incidents rise
during difficult financial times. If
St.Vincent de Paul is an emergency source for food and short-term financial
help for parishioners and those living within the parish boundaries. Please
call 847-437-6208. Requests will be handled with care and confidentiality.
In this Gospel the love that Jesus reveals through the
symbol of the cross is: self-giving, sacrificial, healing,
forgiving, in solidarity with the weak, confident in the
power of God.
During the hot summer months many of the
elderly, especially those who are sick, are not able
to find relief from the heat. Please help the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul to bring respite and hope to
them.

“Every threat to the family is a threat to society itself. The future of humani-
ty, as Saint John Paul II often said, passes through the family (cf. Familiaris
Consortio, 85). So protect your families! See in them your country’s greatest
treasure and nourish them always by prayer and the grace of the sacra-
ments.” -Pope Francis
Migrant families who are escaping various forms of violence and persecution
in their homeland are being routinely separated at the boarder. Since Octo-
ber 2017, over 700 children have been separated from their
parents, including over 100 children under the age of four. On May 4, 2018,
DHS stated that it will refer all individuals who cross the border without au-
thorization for criminal prosecution, including adult members of family units.
If implemented, this policy will undoubtedly lead to
a drastic increase in incidences of family separation.
ACTION: Ask Congress to protect immigrant families seeking safety and shel-
ter from violence. Visit www.justiceforimmigrants.org/take-action/action-
alerts/ for ways to contact your officials.

STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE
Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from
John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference
to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These
days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the
desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of
Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in
the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey
(the biblical number for a preparation time).
Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the
life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of
eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the
Bread of Life.
We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole
world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread
of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Pastor Emeritus
The title ‘emeritus’ can be given to someone who loses office by reason of age or accepted resig-
nation. The office of Pastor is essential to a parish and the law anticipates only one in each parish.
In other words, though there may be two or more priests in a parish, only one can be the Pastor.
Some priests serve as pastor of a parish for a long time and though, in their retirement, they may
not want the responsibilities of overseeing a parish, they may wish to live out their retirement
years celebrating the sacraments with those they have grown to know and love. In this case,
though there is a "younger" priest appointed to the office of Pastor, as means of respecting the
former pastor's service and continued presence in the parish, he is given the title pastor emeritus.
This is a title given as a gesture of respect, nothing more.
