ADVENT CONFESSIONS – An advent penance service for both Sacred Heart and Saint Cecilia parishioners will take place on Monday, December 19th in Saint Cecilia Church be-ginning at 7 o’clock in the evening. A number of priests will be available for confession. Adults and children should ap-proach the sacrament of penance prior to the celebration of the feast of Our Lord’s Nativity so that we may welcome the Christ Child into our grace-filled hearts.

Fourth Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016 They shall name him Emmanuel, Which means “God is with us” ==Matthew 1:23

HOUSE OF THE LORD – This past year many thousands of dollars were spent to renovate and clean our church. We would like to keep the church looking in good shape and this requires our cooperation. Please do not stand in the back of the church. There are enough places available at every Mass for everyone to be seated comfortably. Leaning against the walls has produced scratches and dirty spots that are becoming diffi-cult to remove. Your cooperation is a sign of your faith and love for the Lord’s House.

FROM THE PASTOR – No literature nor posted advertise-ments are to be placed in the church without the permission of our pastor. Any and all unauthorized material will be re-moved.

THANK YOU – Many thanks to the ladies who launder the Mass linens for also recently laundering the altar server robes. May the Lord bless: Pattie Fitzgerald, Kathy Gorman, Catherine Haynes, Rose Marie Hester, Louise Naclerio, Stella Rychlicki, Peg Whalen and Deidra Zink. ALSO, many thanks to Deidre Zink for putting the exterior Christmas lights in front of the church and other decorations!

580-St. Cecilia

ST. JOHN was born in 1403 in a village the name of which he bears, situated in the diocese of Cracow, Poland. His childhood was passed in innocence under the care of his virtuous parents. After finishing his studies he became professor in the University of Cracow, a position he occupied several years, endeavoring not only to train his pupils in science, but also to install into their hearts the sentiments of piety with which he was himself animated. Having been ordained to the priesthood, he distinguished himself by still greater zeal for the glory of God and his own perfection. The carelessness and indifference of so many Christians were for him a great source of affliction. As parish priest he became a true pastor of souls, severe toward himself and indulgent to others, showing himself the father of his people and their friend when they were in need. After some years he resumed his duties of professor, practicing at the same time prayer, love for the poor, and all Christian virtues. Consumed by the desire of suffering martyrdom, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and preached “Jesus Crucified” to the Turks. Four times he made a journey to Rome on foot. His sleep was short and taken on the floor; his food barely sufficed to keep him alive. By means of fasting and severe discipline he preserved his purity intact. During the last thirty years of his life he abstained entirely from meat. Finally, after distributing to the poor all he had in his house, he died in 1474. He was canonized in 1767 by Pope Clement XIII. PRAYER: Almighty God, help us to follow the example of Your Priest, St. John, in advancing in the science of the saints. May we show com-passion to all who are in need so that we ourselves may obtain Your mercy. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey

ST. JOHN OF KANTY, Priest December 23

My Dear Parishioners, We have arrived at the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the celebration of the Lord’s Day. Next Sunday we will celebrate the feast of our salvation, the Nativity of our God and Sav-ior, Jesus Christ. Of the four Evangelists only Luke and Matthew tell the story of the birth of the Savior. In today’s Gospel we hear Saint Matthew’s version of this event and of the

prominent role Saint Joseph plays within it. Joseph is the quiet man, the obedient man who is faith-filled and open to the bidding of God. Like his spouse, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Joseph places his life in God’s hands even though he is unsure of what will be. Saint Joseph is a loving husband who goes to great lengths to protect his wife and the child who will be born to them. He is the protector of this Holy Family, its guardian and strength. We are at the threshold of the feast which commemorates God’s Gift-giving to us, the birth of our Savior. We are continually reminded in the Sacred Scriptures of the generosity of God and the blessings which He continually be-stows upon us. In one verse of today’s Responsorial Psalm we find the words, “He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, a reward from God his savior.” This “he” is the servant of God, that is, all those who place their trust in the Lord. We, you and me, are hopefully in this group. As we seek to be in God’s company so He blesses us for He is the “King of Glory.” This year Christmas falls on a Sunday and presents a situation where the regular Sunday offering could be over-looked by some, a concern of many pastors who need the regular weekly offering for parish expenses. Here in our parish I am always grateful for the manner in which our parishioners respond so generously with “special gifts” to the parish at Christmas and Easter. I share this because I want to reinforce and encourage your generosity to the Church in appreciation to God for sending us the very best gift, His Son Christ the Lord. With next Sunday being the last Sunday of the year let me remind you that your financial gift to our Church is a charitable donation to a non- profit corporation which is beneficial to you in tax reporting. Your donation of cash, stocks or other financial instruments are greatly appreciated and can bring blessings to us for years to come. I say THANK YOU to all of you who support the Church with such love and generosity. I pray that the Lord will reward you for your fidelity in this life and in the life to come! See you in church for Christmas! Father Zig
