Dear Friends in St. Dominic. On behalf of our entire parish family here in St. Dominic, I would like to thank you personally for your generous donation/contribution to our Capital fund Campaign. This week-end, we shall take up a follow-up commitment for our “GOD’S CALL TO BUILD: OUR BRIDGE TO THE FUTURE” capital campaign to raise funds for the completion of our parish project. Those who have not yet made their commitment to this second Capital Campaign may do so—at this time We know that you agree – that the project we are undertaking is much needed and worthwhile. In the meantime, please join us in praying for the success of our campaign. May God bless you and those you hold dear! This week-end’s scriptures warn us about the pitfall of self-righteousness. In the gospel, Jesus is not using parables; he is speaking to us plainly and directly: Beware of the scribes. No figure earned Christ’s disdain more than the proud, self- seeking religious leaders (like these scribes), because no other figure so distorts people’s idea of God, thereby driving people away from him. Christ’s entire life, and especially his death, was the proclamation of a different type of leadership, one involving sincere, sacrificial service. Jesus is other-centered; the scribes are self-centered. they were extremely religious people – they knew their faith, studied it, and followed all the rules. But they had become so focused on external performance that they had forgotten what was more important: a humble, thankful heart, like the poor widow’s. Yet, this still does not explain why Jesus warns us to beware of them. In the Gospel, Jesus is speaking to his followers, many of whom will become religious leaders; he does not want them to follow the scribes’ example. But in a larger sense, every Christian, by virtue of baptism, is called to be a leader of others, an evangelizer, a prophet of the gospel to the world in word, deed, and example. And so, every single one of us is exposed to the same temptations that led the scribes into self-righteousness. How easy it is to consider oneself superior to others for all the wrong reasons! Because we are faithful to the true teaching of the Church; because we follow liturgical norms with perfection; because we do not wear immodest clothes; because we do not engage in this or that type of behavior; because we say our prayers and go to Mass; because we are not as morally corrupt as other people we know;…Beware of the scribes--- because it is so very easy to become self- indulgently and self-sufficient religious, and that is the first step to idolatry. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28). Gospel — Beware of those who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the market-places and places of honor at ban-quets (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]). LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — El profeta Elías pide a una viuda pobre que le dé algo de beber y un poco de pan. Cuando ella compartió, su escasez fue saciada (1 Reyes 17:10-16). GOD’S WORD TODAY Saint Mark’s Gospel has been a rich source of challenge and inspiration for us as we have moved through these latter Sundays of Ordinary Time. Today we hear the familiar story of the poor widow who placed her two small coins in the temple treasury. She did not give from her surplus, simply because she had no surplus. The Lord tells us that she gave from her poverty. In the first reading the widow of Zarephath gives Elijah her final store of food. She admits that without this food, she and her son will soon die. Yet her generosity and selflessness result in a jug of oil that never runs dry and a jar of flour that never goes empty. May these two women inspire us to respond to the Lord with generous hearts.

LA PALABRA DE DIOS HOY El Evangelio según san Marcos ha sido una fuente caudalosa, llena de retos e inspiraciones para nosotros en estos últimos domingos del Tiempo Ordinario. Hoy escuchamos la historia tan familiar de la viuda pobre, que puso dos moneditas en las alcancías del templo. Ella no dio de lo que le sobraba, sencillamente porque nada le sobraba. El Señor nos dice que ella dio desde su pobreza. En la primera lectura la viuda de Sarepta le da a Elías el poco alimento que le quedaba almacenado. Ella admite que sin este alimento ella y su hijo pronto morirían. Y así resultó que por su generosidad y abnegación la vasija de aceite nunca se agotó ni la tinaja de harina se vació. Que estas dos mujeres nos inspiren a responderle al Señor con un corazón generoso.

GIVING ALL Trusting widows play a significant role in this weekend’s readings. At the point of poverty, when giv-ing even the smallest amount of what they had could imperil their health and well-being, they trusted God and gave anyway. What is important about their giving is not what or how much they gave, but how they gave it. Without selfishness, they gave to help others. Their giving was from the heart, with little hope or intention of receiving any sort of reward or recognition for their generosity. The monetary values of the widows’ gifts were small, but their value measured in the Kingdom was priceless. There is a significant similarity between their gift and the gift Jesus gave each of us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1974, a revised ritual of penance was given to the Church, and at forty years distance, we still are discovering its treasures and tentative about some of its provisions. The rite reaches deep into our tradition for an early insight: when we turn to God, we are re-stored to life in the Church. There are three different forms of penance. The familiar individual confession is preserved, but with tremendous enrichment. It is less rushed, anchored by a reading from scripture, and the confession of sins is seen as an opportunity to proclaim faith in God’s power to save. In a sense, what is “confessed” is the penitent’s faith in God’s gift of forgiveness. The priest suggests a penance that may be directly connected to the virtue that the person seeks as a means of overcoming the fault. There are formulas for contrition suggested, but the penitent might even express sorrow for sin and desire for mercy in his or her own words. The prayer of absolution grounds the event in the life and ministry of the Church. Harking back to the joyful dance of bishops leading penitents into the church, the rite now ends with a prayer of thanksgiving for God’s mercy, and may include the gesture of laying on of hands. After forty years, we struggle to claim this rite forged of memory, tradition, and grace. History tells us to be patient; we do not always recognize a treasure at first.

ENTREGA TOTAL Las viudas confiadas juegan un importante papel en las lecturas de esta semana. Aunque eran pobres y el dar aún algo bien pequeño podría poner en peligro su salud y bienestar, confiaban en Dios y daban lo que podían. Lo que es importante sobre sus donativos no es la cantidad que daban, sino que daban algo. Sin egoísmo, daban para ayudar a otros. Su dar salía del corazón, con poca esperanza o intención de recibir algún premio o reconocimiento por su generosidad. El valor monetario de los dones de las viudas eran pequeños, pero su valor en la medida del Reino era inestimable. Hay una gran semejanza entre su regalo y el regalo que Jesús ha dado a cada uno de nosotros. Las viudas ofrecieron sus vidas a Dios. Jesús ofreció su vida por nosotros.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Entre las comunidades hispanas aún existe el concepto de que a la Iglesia se le da limosna. Esta es una horrible costumbre, puesto que ni a Dios ni a la Iglesia se le debe la limosna, sino el diezmo y no necesariamente económico, esto es, también debemos considerar tiempo y talento. Este diezmo se le da a Dios por medio del mantenimiento de la Iglesia, la ayuda directa a los necesitados, la generosidad con agencias de caridad, etcétera. No importa a quién o cómo damos el diezmo que debemos a Dios, lo que importa es reconocer que no es limosna, es decir, dar de lo que nos sobra. Es dar desde el corazón, compartir, como la viuda del Evangelio, lo que tenemos para vivir. No obstante, muchos somos tacaños con el Señor. En lugar de dar con generosidad, damos poco o damos para hacernos notar. Damos de lo que nos sobra, si acaso damos. Tenemos mucho que aprender de la viuda que se nos presenta en Marcos 12:41-44. Ella, siendo pobre y necesitada, aún así quiso compartir con Dios de lo que tenía para vivir. Casi siempre los pobres son más generosos que los ricos o la clase media. Son ellos quienes nos muestran la generosidad de Dios y nos desafían a hacer lo mismo, a fin de erradicar la pobreza.
