St. Dominic Catholic Church THIRTEENTH SUNDY OF ORDINARY TME Houston, TX June 28,2015

Roer Estorgue

Dear Friends in St. Dominic This week-end, we shall take up a second collection for St. Peter’s Pence. This collection unites us in solidarity with Pope Francis and his works of charity toward those in need. Your donations will support the charitable works of the Holy Father and provide emergency assistance to those most in need, including victims of oppression, natural disasters and war. Your efforts are essential to the poor and suffering of the world. Thank you for your support of Pope Francis and his charitable works. This week-end’s scriptures teach us that humility is the precondi-tion for true happiness. In today's secularized world, we do not often talk about the devil, and when we do, it is usually to make a joke. But Jesus did not just make jokes about the devil. In fact, the Bible tells us that undoing the devil's work was the primary reason Jesus came to earth in the first place: This was the purpose of the appearing of the Son of God, to undo the work of the devil. This Sunday’s First Reading explains why the devil is so im-portant for human history: it was by the envy of the dev-il that death entered the world. This happened in the Garden of Eden, with original sin. When our first parents let themselves be deceived by the devil, stopped trusting in God, and disobeyed God's command, the original harmony that God had built into creation was shattered. Evil, death, and suffering flooded the world. And ever since then, human history, both of the human race, and of every individual, has been a battleground between those destructive forces of evil, sin and selfishness, and the re-deeming power of God's grace. This is the truth, revealed by Christ, and fairly obvious to anyone who takes an honest look at the world. But if it is true and obvious, why does today's secularized world shy away from talking about it? Part of the answer is simple: if we admit the reality of the devil and original sin, we are also ad-mitting the fact that we, as fallen human beings, are in need of a Savior, someone stronger than evil and death who can come and redeem us. But admitting our need for a Savior takes humility, and humility scares us. We much prefer to see ourselves as self-sufficient, heroic, successful, and capable of taking care of our-selves. But unless we are humble, admitting that we are not God, that we need God, then God's grace will not be able to touch and transform our lives, because God is too respectful of our freedom to force down the door of our hearts. Sincerely yours in Christ Rev. Roger Estorque

THE LORD OF LIFE

A t this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first read-

ing, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark’s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, “though he was rich, for your sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity .

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

T he premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved

characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath.

Pedro le responde: Lord, you know that I love you, mientras que en español le dice: “Señor, tú sabes que te quiero”.
