FROM THE PASTOR The story is told of a pastor, whose Bishop was coming to his parish to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Bishop only came once every three years, so the pastor thought he had better clean up the place for the Bishop’s visit. A week before the Bishop’s arrival, the pastor employed workers to clean and prepare the church grounds. He even dug up the old forlorn and dried up flowerbeds. On the morning of the visit, the pastor himself planted newly cut flowers in the flowerbeds in the front of the church. The whole display looked very impressive. After the ceremony, the Bishop complemented the pastor on how well the church looked especially the beautiful flowers. The Bishop was pleased with the condition of the church, the pastor was happy that the ordeal of having the Bishop was over and that the church looked nice for the occasion. The next day of course, everything went back to “normal”. The flowers wilted and died. Unless our life is rooted in Christ, it is all a show. Looking good for a short time but having no roots. “You have heard that it was said……..but I say to you” Are we to remain very good Pharisees or tepid followers of Christ? It’s safer to know the law and see what is to be done, then to accept an open-ended invitation to follow Jesus. Being Christlike is never-ending! You never know where He will lead us. The one thing we can count on, when we are rooted in Christ, He will lead us to a more authentic way of life.   ~Fr. Joe ____________________________________________________

NEW – Film of the Fatima Story Will Premiere in April fatimathemovie.com Origin Entertainment has announced the completion of its long-awaited film Fatima. The official trailer will be released on Ash Wednesday (February 26), and the film will open in theaters nationwide on April 24. The producers say: “Fatima tells the story of a 10-year-old shepherd and her two young cousins in Portugal, who report seeing visions of the Virgin Mary. Their revelations inspire believers but anger officials of both the Church and the secular government, who try to force them to recant their story. As word of their prophecy spreads, tens of thousands of religious pilgrims flock to the site in hopes of witnessing a miracle. What they experience will change their lives forever.” The film is directed by Marco Pontecorvo, with an international cast, including Stephanie Gil, Lucia Moniz, Harvey Keitel, and Sonia Braga, and the original song “Gratia Plena” by Paolo Buonvino is performed by tenor Andrea Bocelli. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time License to Sin

In the James Bond movies, 007 has a license to kill. He can shoot all the bad guys he wants without worrying about being charged with murder. God, however, does not issue a license to sin. The first reading from Sirach reminds us that any time we choose between life and death, good and evil, it is our free choice and our responsibility. God may allow us to make bad choices, but God never commands anyone to sin. Jesus goes even deeper than Sirach. The people of Sirach's time had followed the laws and commandments that governed external actions. As long as they treated others fairly, did not kill anyone or steal from them, they could think whatever they wanted. But Jesus taught that thoughts and desires that lead to sin can also be freely chosen or rejected. In the Gospel he gives us some examples. The first is about killing. Jesus says that anyone who gets angry enough to kill or who looks down on his neighbor as not deserving to live has committed murder in his heart. What prejudices or grudges am I holding in my heart? The longer I hold onto hurtful feelings, the more likely it becomes that they will lead to hurtful actions. Because the Eucharist is our sacrament of unity, we should take care to be reconciled with others before coming to the altar. The next warning is about adultery, which also begins with interior feelings. Jesus exaggerates when he tells us to cut off a hand or tear out an eye, because he knew how easily we rationalize our feelings and pretend they are harmless. This leads to the next warning about divorce. Jesus takes marriage seriously and expects his disciples to do the same. His final example concerns taking oaths. Apparently, people would swear upon almost anything in an effort to be believed. Jesus gets to the point and says that we wouldn't need oaths if we always told the truth and kept our promises. Our faith is based on the knowledge that God keeps promises. Shouldn't we do the same? -Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this selfgiving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to participation in the changes the Reign of God requires. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
