EPIPHANY OF THE LORD We celebrate epiphany today and hear how God’s very self is revealed to people of all nations through the Incarnation. The emphasis today is on this revelation to foreigners: the foreign nations that will now pay tribute to the restored Jerusalem, the Gentiles whom Paul recognized as now being copartners through the gospel, and the magi from the east who recognized the Messiah and paid him homage.

MONDAY, JANUARY 8 The Baptism of Our Lord

The Baptism of the Lord is closely related to the Epiphany and should be considered in relation to that feast. Jesus’ ministry to bring in God’s

rule was inaugurated in his baptism. As he came out of the wa-ter, the Spirit rested on Jesus and a sign of God’s approval was heard.

On this day, we celebrate not only Jesus’ baptism but our own as well, for our baptism is rooted in Christ. Baptism joins us to Christ and his church, and with all of the baptized we are called to share in Jesus’ ministry. In the waters of baptism we are buried with Christ, cleansed of our sins, and raised to share in his resurrection. The Spirit is given to us and we are declared the children of God.

An excerpt from the Companion to the Book of Common Wor-ship (Geneva Press, 2003, 148)

YOUR STAR LED THE WISE MEN

Lord Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lord,

infant born of the Virgin Mary,

your star led wise men to the manger

and they paid homage to you in your mother’s arms.

We pray to you.

Light each man and woman’s star

-- their reason for hope and for love --

so that it rises in the heavens of their hearts

and leads them to you.

Together with the wise men,

they can then offer you as gifts

the gold of their faithfulness,

the incense of their prayer,

and the myrrh of their sacrifice.

As followers of Christ Jesus, we are reminded that all things including life itself are a gift from God. What matters to God is not the gift, but the giver. Giving is God’s invitation to a way of life. It helps us to overcome our selfishness and love of things. What we do with what we have been given is a sign to God and to the world of the depth and meaning of our commitment. By recalling that all is gift, we therefore must strive to be generous with the financial gifts, both great and small, that God has be-stowed upon us. Thank you for your support and your generosity to God and to St. Bernadette Parish. St. Bernadette Parish has enlisted Parish Giving to provide its parishioners and supporters with the opportunity to use Electronic Funds Transfer as an alternative method for giving. The Program is free of charge for parishioners. More information about Parish Giving is available on our Parish web site: www.stbl.org on the “Parish Giving” page.

What’s Happening

From PreK-3

In PreK 3 we have made many new friends this year! We have

been practicing kindness and generosity so we can be like Je-

sus. We have also been learning about shapes, numbers and

colors. We love singing songs and listening to many amazing

stories. We have been learning our prayers and hearing about

important saints.

Catholic School Week will begin on Sunday, January 28,

2018 with an open house in the Wright Center and the Main

School and an activity fair in the gym.

We look forward to showing some of the fun things we have

done in our preschool with you!

Tuition Assistance

St. Bernadette School is blessed to be part of such a wonderful

community. Many of the fundraising activities done at St. Ber-

nadette are carried out to support the Tuition Assistance Pro-

gram. All donations designated to this program benefit stu-

dents who are members of the parish. We thank you for your

generosity and continued support of St. Bernadette School.

May God continue to bless you.

THE MAGI’S JOURNEY The Magi didn’t have a smooth trip. Travel was difficult and dangerous. Roads were bad. There were no signposts along the way. Inns were awful places to stay. There were always thieves. There was no police protection outside of a town. The Magi got lost. They were threatened by Herod without even knowing it. But the Magi had resources to fall back on. They had each other. They had a star. They got to Jerusalem, and the scribes and chief priests helped them to locate Bethlehem as the place where they should go. And they had the help of God in the dream. The journey we all take to the Lord is a long one . . . And it ends in death. We’re on that journey our whole life. Not even the saints (including Mary) experienced a journey that was without difficulties, zig-zags and unexpected problems and mishaps. What about people who don’t have resources to fall back on during this journey? This is what the Church is meant to be - the people and resources that help us journey to the Lord. The Eucharist is our star. It’s where we get the Bread of Life, traditionally called “the food for the journey.” We fall on our face and we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We get ill and we have the Sacrament of the Sick. But most of all we have each other. We are meant to be a community that is always there for each other. The Magi ended their journey when they found the Lord. One of the most important purposes of the Church is to help us do the same. We don’t live to find the Church. The Church lives to help us find the Lord.

LIFE LESSONS FROM THE THREE KINGS

When we seek God with sincere determination, we will find him. He is not hiding from us, but wants to have an intimate relationship with each of us. These wise men paid Jesus the kind of respect only God deserves, bowing before him and worshiping him. Jesus is not just a great teacher or admirable person as many people say today, but the Son of the Living God. After the Three Kings met Jesus, they did not go back the way they came. When we get to know Jesus Christ, we are changed forever and cannot go back to our old life.

If surgery or admission to the hospital is scheduled, please call the rectory ahead of time to make arrangements to receive the Sacrament of the Sick. Due to the privacy act, if you are in the hospital and wish to see a priest while you are there, you must register as a Catholic when admitted or make sure a family member does so for you. This is the only way to assure a visit by a priest or Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.
