Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Bernadette, strive to better know, love, and serve God, through the teachings of

His Son Jesus Christ and the graces provided to us through His Holy Spirit and the Sacraments.

Dear Parishioners,

Epiphany is more than celebrating the appearance of the Magi, the Wise Men, in the story of Christmas. In the Eastern Christian churches, it is the main feast of the Christmas season and celebrates not only the birth but the manifestation of the Savior to the world, the light of God has been revealed. For us, in what we refer to as the Western Christian Churches, it is the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas. So, from Christmas Day until Epiphany a period to celebrate both liturgically and socially the Feast of Christmas. Unfortunately, much of the population is not tuned into this fact. One doesn’t have to have a big dinner every day for the twelve days, but the spirit of Christmas should last longer than it does. So, don’t be in a hurry to take down the tree, for instance. Next year don’t put the tree up too early, wait to put it up closer to Christmas. When people ask why you haven’t put your tree up yet tell them about the true Twelve Days of Christmas. This may also help us appreciate the season better.

God Bless, Fr. Dave

Catholic Charities 2018 RECAP Thanks to many generous donors, 2018 was a record-breaking year for the number of clients we were able to assist and the amount of funds we raised. Although these records are noteworthy, we all know, there is no end to poverty and Cath-olic Social Teaching tells us that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. If you were able or unable to help us in 2018 with our charitable mission, please prayerfully consider what you might be able to do in 2019. Aside from simply making cash donations, there are multiple opportunities for vol-unteering and getting involved in our events. Reach out to Nancy Butters ([email protected]) or Christie Dade ([email protected]) to be part of this mission!

Italy Pilgrimage 2019 Father Ed Wills will be leading a pilgrimage to Italy in 2019, from October 3 to 17. Since the group will be limited to 32, if you or a friend are interested, please contact Cheryl Wills at 816.807.2144 or [email protected] for a de-tailed brochure as soon as possible.

Question of the Week Epiphany of the Lord

Respect for Elders

Reading 1 I Isaiah 60:1–6 (glory of the new Zion) Reading II Ephesians 3:2–3, 5–6 (commission to preach God’s plan) Gospel Matthew 2:1–12 (the visit of the magi)

Key Passage: Then Herod sent the [magi] to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” (Matthew 2:8) Adult: When have you been jealous or fearful of another person? When are such feelings harmful? Child: When have you been jealous because something good happened to another person instead of you? What is the problem with feeling that way?

Reflection

The Magi are “overjoyed” at seeing the star that leads the way to Jesus. To those searching for truth, Jesus is a beacon of light in a dark night. The Magi overcame obstacles and yet still found their way, bearing their gifts, to Jesus Christ. May this be an example for us: let us be guided by Christ’s light as we bring our best to the world. Let us always find new ways around any obstacles we might face.

Hospital Visits

Did you know that hospitals do not call to notify the parish about your stay, even though they may ask for your religious affiliation at admis-sion? Ask your nurse to contact the hospital chaplain if you want to re-ceive communion. Each hospital has a different schedule. Did you also know St. Bernadette Parish serves Research Hospital on Fridays? We have six Extraordi-nary Ministers of Holy Communion who

serve on rotation.
