SOCIAL MINISTRY HAPPENINGS
Many of our people will not be able to go on vacation but there are many ways we can help them enjoy the
summer at home. Consider the following:
Small garden tools are helpful. A person with limited funds can begin a little garden and enjoy the activity and
satisfaction all summer long. Garden tools, bulbs, small plants or seeds are great.
We have the greatest beaches in the country. Children’s bathing suits, sand pails, beach balls. Think of the fun
at the beach! craft books, gardening books, cook books etc.
We also have good use for your not used, knitting yarn. Members of our Catholic Daughters bring it to the local
jail. The women there make items they need or for their families. We have a young woman who lives in a group
home. She loves to crochet and knit and would like to teach it to the other women in the group home. Check the
old sewing box.

7TH Sunday of EASTER Acts1:15-17,20a, 20c-26 Ps103:1-2,11-12,19-20 1Jn 4:11-16 Jn 17:11b-19
In the biblical world, the number 12 symbolized the12 tribes of Israel. That Jesus selects 12
apostles indicates that he is thinking about renewing the nation. After Judas’s death, the 11 remaining apostles felt
that it was important to keep their number at 12, so they selected his successor, Matthias, “who accompanied us the
whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us”(v21). For the apostles it was important that he too was an eye-
witness to Jesus’s ministry; his testimony will be reliable.
The author of First John reminds us that “if God so loved us, we also must love one another”(v11). For the Jo-
hannine community, the love commandment is above all others. Our author speaks as witness and so can “testify
that the Father sent his Son as savior”.(v14). The Second Vatican Councils Dei Verbum (Dogmatic Constitution on
Divine Revelation) tells us that “Jesus perfected revelation”(4). Our task as a church and as individual believers is
to seek to better understand God’s word to us and to put it into practice in our lives.
In the Gospel today, Jesus prays to the Father for his disciples-who “are in the world, while I am coming to
you”(see v11a)- that “they may be one just as we are one”(v11b).Their task is to continue his work: “As you sent me
into the world, “so I sent them into the world”(v18). Knowing they will face the same rejection he did ,.Jesus prays
that they may be safe “from the evil one” (v15). John’s community is experiencing trials, and these words of Jesus
serve as a source of comfort for them.
For Reflection: Do I think the love commandment precedes all others? What can we do as a church to help bring
about Jesus’s desire that we “may be one”? Is unity the same as uniformity?
Please note that “Prayers for the Sick” will be announced from the altar for 4 weeks. Then the names
will be in the bulletin for another 4 weeks. Please inform the Rectory if you wish to add a loved one for
prayers, or to have someone’s name removed.

Month 3 Well, I now weigh six ounces and mom can feel my movements.I have finger-
nails, eyelashes, any own unique fingerprints, which will remain the same for
the rest of my life. My taste buds are working and my sense of hearing is devel-
oping. I have soft hair all over my body. I can touch my hands to my face and
grasp my feet. Basically, there will be no major new developments from here on. I just
need nourishment, protection, and love...and prayers.
