St. Junipero Serra Feast Day: July 1 –

Padre Serra’s arrival in San Diego in 1769 A portrait of Padre Serra-Apostle of California

· Miquel Jose Serra Ferrer on November 24, 1713 in Petra, Majorca, Spain · September 14, 1730, Serra was invested with the Franciscan habit as a novice. Se4ptember 15, 1731 cheerfully bound himself irrevocably to God and the service of the Franciscan Order, choosing the name of St. Francis’ great friend, Juniper as his name for religious life and became known as Fray Junipero Serra. · Ordained a deacon St. Patrick’s Day 1736 · 1737 ordained a priest · In 1749 secured permission with some fellow Franciscans to work at a mission near Mexico City. Serra took the long sea voyage to Spain's colo-nies. · In 1767 King Carlos III of Spain expels the Jesu-its from Spain and its colonies. The Franciscans are invited to replace them as missionaries in Baja (lower) California. Serra was appointed head of these mis-sions. · 1768 – The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming. The Russians had moved to Alaska and came as far south to establish Fort Ross in Sonoma County in 1808. · The Viceroy of New Spain decides to explore and found missions in Alta (upper) California. · On July 16, 1769, Serra founded Mission San Diego in honor of Didacus of Alcala. Under his presi-dency were founded the first nine of what would be-come a chain of 21 missions: · In 1779, Franciscan missionaries under Serra's direction planted California's first sustained vineyard at Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Hence, Padre Serra has been called the "Father of California Wine". The variety he planted, presumably descended from Spain, became known as the Mission grape and dominated California wine production until about 1880. · On August 28, 1784, at the age of 70, Junípero Serra died at Mission San Carlos Borromeo from tuberculosis. He is buried there under the sanctuary. Following Serra's death, leadership of the Franciscan missionary effort in Alta California passed to Fermín Lasuén. · Beatified: September 25, 1988 in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City by Pope John Paul II · Canonized: September 23, 2015, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Francis

Did You Know? Prevent underage drinking

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcohol-ism reports that nearly 5,000 children under the age of 21 die from alcohol-related incidents every year. Stud-ies show that children as young as 12 may be exposed to alcohol and drugs, and nearly 75% of high school seniors have tried alcohol at least once. Talk to your children about alcohol and the risks of underage drink-ing. Partner with other parents who see your children regularly, and make sure you are all on the same page about keeping children from drinking. Parents should also serve as positive role models for safe drinking behaviors. For more information, vis-it stopalcoholabuse.gov.

First Friday Adoration Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament will take place following the 8:15 a.m. Mass on Friday, July 3rd. Benediction will take place right after Mass.

4th of July The legal separation of the 13 English colonies in the New World occurred on July 2, 1776 when the Second Conti-nental Congress, meeting at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia, declared the sovereign status of the United Colonies. What transpired to make these 13 disparate colonies, each with its strong sense of self-identity, each with its own royal governor and each so economically different from the others, come to the point of uniting and unanimous-ly their united declaring independence from Great Britain? The French and Indian War, or Seven Years War, represented the decisive turning point in British-colonial relations. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 ratified Britain’s undisputed control of the seas and shipping trade, as well as its sovereignty over much of the North American continent east of the Mississippi River (including French Canada). But a steep price accompanied the fruits of total victory. The British Government had borrowed heavily from British and Dutch bankers to finance the war. Parliament thought it only fair that the 13 colonies which greatly benefited from the French and Indian War should shoulder some of the costs of the war. In order to address these debts, the govern-ment increased import duties on goods such as sugar and tobacco, along with a series of high excise (sales) taxes on goods such as salt, beer and spirits. But the colonists had no representation in Parliament. Decisions affecting their everyday life and household econo-mies were made by a group of people across the Atlantic. Over time the colonists began to see themselves as unfairly taxed, watched over like children and ignored in their attempts to have parliament and the king address their grievances. Slowly and gradually the two sides moved further apart and the movement for independence gained momen-tum. The Second Continental Congress approved a Committee of Five who drafted and presented to the congress what would become known as the Declaration of Independence. The Committee of Five worked from June 11 to July 5, 1776. Its members were: John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Robert Livingston of New York, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson of Virginia. At their first meeting four of the members turned to the remaining one, Thomas Jefferson and asked him to prepare a draft. Jefferson’s evolving statement was critically reviewed first by the other four members and then by the Continental Congress. The first reading of the Declaration of Independence was on June 28, the second reading on July 2, the third reading on July 3 and the final draft of the Declaration was approved on July 4, 1776 and published the following day. In remarkable coincidence or providence, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only two signers of the Declara-tion of Independence to become President of the United States, both died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of which Jefferson was its primary architect and Adams a critical editor. In the 1790s their friendship began to splinter. The incredibly bitter and slanderous election of 1800 between Adams and Jefferson result-ed in them becoming bitter enemies. Through the efforts of Benjamin Rush of Pennsylvania, a colleague from the Conti-nental Congress Adams wrote to Jefferson New Year’s Day 1812. The two never saw each other again but wrote letters back and forth. On his deathbed, Adams asked, “ Does Jefferson still live?”, not knowing that Jefferson had died just a few hours before. The 4th of July is marked by fireworks, parades, speeches and barbeques. In whatever manner Americans celebrate the 4th of July, it is a day for us to give thanks to God for our independence, freedoms and liberties.
