Everyday Stewardship
Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments
As human beings, we seem to have a wide array of insatiable desires. We long
for more money, more time, and more stuff. We spend millions of dollars each
year on remedies for our overeating. We look to our neighbors to see what they
have that we want so we can keep up with them in the race toward happiness.
We look for instant gratification only to find that our hunger for whatever it is
remains intact.
Stewardship is the pathway to curbing all those cravings. On this journey, we
let go of things that keep us tied down to this world and tied up in our sin. All
that we have becomes instruments for God to use in our lives and the lives of
our neighbors. When we have detached from enough in this world, we find out
the truth: Nothing on earth can truly satisfy our cravings completely. Jesus
Christ is the sole answer for our needs and desires.
Although the truth is right in front of us at each and every Mass in the
Eucharist, we can easily spend our days in denial of that truth. It takes trust to
step out in faith and give it all over to God. We are all called to let go and let
God be God. Answering the call is easier said than done. However, if we can
finally make that bold move, we will find ourselves completed by the One who
was with us all along.
La Corresponsabilidad Diaria
Reconocer a Dios En Los Momementos Ordinarios

STEWARDSHIP / CORRESPONSABILIDAD
Gratitude in Action: Our Way of Life / Gratitud en Acción: Nuestra forma de Vida
Hunger is defined in a couple of ways. It can be
associated with pains or an uncomfortable feeling in the
stomach because of a need for food. In a figurative sense,
it is a strong desire or craving. We see television and
other media ads depicting extreme cases of hunger in
poverty situations.
Poverty itself is identified as being poor, lacking what is
needed.
Thirst is defined as an uncomfortable feeling in the
mouth or throat caused by having had nothing to drink. It,
too, is described in a figurative sense as a strong desire or
craving.
Hunger and thirst are not always cravings for table food
and drink. They can be that strong desire or craving for
something we cannot purchase for a specified dollar
amount. They might be those desires or cravings we so
long for to bring peace to our heart and soul, cravings
only God can satisfy.
“There are so many needy people who hunger—but not
for bread, they have plenty of bread—but for God! Go
there, to tell this truth: Jesus Christ is the Lord and he
saves you. But always go and touch the flesh of Christ!
The Gospel cannot be preached purely intellectually: the
Gospel is truth but it is also love and it is also beauty!
And this is truly the joy of the Gospel!”1
So, where are we in all of this? Is our hunger, our thirst,
one which can be satisfied by a grocery store or
restaurant purchase? Or, is our hunger and thirst for
something much deeper, much greater? Is it a hunger and
thirst only God can quench?
In our hunger and thirst, are we the “flesh of Christ” to be
touched, or do we feel called to go out into the world to
be the presence of Christ, the one to touch the heart and
soul of another in need?
In prayer, lifting our hunger and thirst to Jesus who alone
can satisfy our deepest longings, our insatiable desires,
we will be guided according to the Father’s will. Our feet
will be planted on the right path – the path to be nurtured
or the path to nurture another.
He is, after all, the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

profundos, nuestros deseos insaciables, seremos
Vida!
Pastor’s Message by Father Oscar Martin Picos
The 18th
Sunday in Ordinary Time / 18° Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

People need Jesus and they look for Him.
There is something about Him that attracts
them, but they do not know exactly why they
are looking for Him or what they are seeking.
According to the evangelist, many of them are
following Him because the day before He
distributed bread to satisfy their hunger.
Jesus starts to talk to them. There is something that needs
to be clarified from the beginning. The material bread is
very important. He Himself has taught them to ask God for
their "daily bread". But human beings need something
more than their daily quota of food. Jesus wants to offer
them nourishment that can satisfy their hunger for life
forever.
What Jesus tells them touches the heart of Christianity:
"The work that God wants is this: that you believe in the
One He has sent". All God wants from each of us is that we
believe in Jesus Christ, because He is the great gift that
God has sent to us. The only requirement of the New
Testament, the only work we must do, is to build our faith
in Jesus. Everything else is secondary.
After twenty centuries of Christianity, we discover again
that the strength and originality of the Church lie entirely in
believing in Jesus Christ and following Him. Rather than
practicing a religion of complex "beliefs" and "practices",
we simply need to learn to live as disciples of Jesus.
The Christian faith is not a code of new rules, rites and
observances, superior to those of the Old Testament. The
Christian faith is practiced by living a lifestyle based on a
trusting relationship with Jesus Christ. We become
Christians by learning to think, feel, love, work, suffer and
live as He did. In today’s secular society, it is more
important than ever to focus on building a vital and
nourishing relationship with Him.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week What can I do to accomplish the works of God? This is a
question every Christian must ask. Ultimately, we are
asked to be the light of Christ for others. This calls us to
be compassionate, forgiving, nonviolent, generous,
concerned for the poor, and welcoming to strangers.
These are often contrary to what the world values. We are
asked to simplify our lives and become less self-focused
so that others can share in God's creation. We need help
in order to fulfill this tall order. The Eucharist, the Body
and Blood of Christ, which we celebrate today, is the way
we are nourished so that we can fulfill this mission.
Volunteers are needed for the Thrift Store Fall Festival. Can you lend a hand with crafts, ticket sales, or at a specialty
booth? Even a few hours of your time would be extremely helpful. Please contact Jackie or Diane by stopping by the
Thrift Store during business hours, or calling 435-673-1029.

©Liturgical
