Lift Up Your Hearts
Wednesday of this week, March 25, the Church
celebrates the Solemnity of the Annunciation: the
moment in which through Mary’s fiat, the Word became
flesh. The encounter between the Archangel Gabriel and
the Blessed Mother is recounted for us in the Gospel of
Luke (1:26-38) and reminds us that God enters into the
world to remedy our wounded human condition only
through our humble cooperation. Yes, He prepared Mary
by having filled her with His grace, preserving her from
sin and granting her a perfectly free will. Still, Mary had
the freedom to accept what the angel asked of her, or
not. While we cannot observe any resistance to God’s
plan on Mary’s part, her question: “How can this be?”
suggests a moment of hesitation before accepting God’s
will. It is in her humble response: “Behold, I am the
handmaid of the Lord,” that we find an example and
model of Christian faith. When we offer ourselves to the
Lord, trusting in His plan and in His Providence, more
that trusting in our own resources, we open ourselves to
His abiding presence and to the wonder
In this present moment when so many are filled with
uncertainty, fear and anxiety, we must remind ourselves
that indeed the Lord is still present to us, that He
continues to provide for us, and even to invite us to be
part of His unfolding plan of humanity’s salvation
through His Son, Jesus Christ. Bishop Zubik has called
for this Wednesday to be observed as a special Day of
Prayer throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh. In spite of
any hesitation we may feel, this is an opportune moment
to follow Mary’s example in offering ourselves to the
Lord as being ready to serve Him and one another as He
asks.

As of Monday, March 16, Bishop Zubik has issued
detailed guidelines for the care of the faithful, the
celebration of the Sacraments, and the conduct of parish
business, while ensuring for the health of the public and
of the priests, ministers and employees of the Church.
These norms will be observed until further notice, and
we anticipate at least until March 30.
All public celebrations of the Mass on both weekdays
and Sundays are suspended until further notice. Our
parish priests will continue to offer daily Mass privately
for the intentions of our parishioners as well for each
Mass intention requested.
Saint Louise Church will continue to be open daily
(7:00am to 10:00pm) for private prayer.
Confessions will be heard at our regular times in both
Saint Louise church (Tuesday evening and Saturday) and
Saint Joan church (Saturdays). During this period we will
not use the confessionals, rather the priests will be
available in the church. We will ask the faithful to
maintain a safe distance (at least 6 feet) both while
waiting and while speaking to the priest.
Wednesday, April 1, The Light is on for You opportunity
for confession is cancelled throughout the diocese.
Our parish priests will be available to celebrate the
Sacrament of Anointing for those who are in extreme
illness or near the end of life. Please contact the parish
office when in need.
Funeral Masses will be permitted in our churches for
the faithful departed, as will Wedding celebrations, but
with attendance limited to immediate family members.
All scheduled events at our parish buildings are
cancelled until further notice, in compliance with the
requests of governmental leaders and sound medical
practice.
Furthermore please note that:
Our parish offices will be closed to the public until
further notice. Staff members will be available by phone
and email to continue to serve our parish needs, although
on a slightly modified schedule.
We will NOT have Eucharist Adoration or our Novena
Prayers on Tuesdays.
Holy Week will be upon us beginning on April 4, 2020.
At this time, the diocese is preparing contingency plans
should public Holy Week Liturgies be suspended.
Further details will be forthcoming.
Thank you all for doing your best to keep up with these
necessary measures and changes in the life of our
Church. While challenging and perhaps disappointing, we
remind ourselves that God remains close to us and
continues to offer us His grace. Our commitment to daily
personal prayer allows us to remain open to the Lord and
all that He offers us.
Let's all continue to keep one another in prayer, to look
after our family and neighbors with extra care, and accept
this present situation with patience and assured of the
Lord's Peace and Grace. Saint Joan of Arc and Saint
Louise de Marillac, Pray for us!
 Yours in Christ,
Fr. Joe

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
PARISH NURSE MINISTRY
Walking Safety
Walking is a healthy activity and here are a few reminders to keep you safe:
When not on a sidewalk or walking trail, always remember to walk facing
traffic. This is confusing to many walkers as it is the opposite of driving/
cycling, but it is important to see what is coming toward you when
walking. This is especially true at times of low or bright light when
shadows may block a driver’s vision.
Cross only at crosswalks and look both ways! Even if you have the green
light, be alert to those who might be turning right at traffic lights.
Be visible - wear bright colors in the daylight and light colored or reflective
clothing at night.
It is always best to walk with a buddy.
Avoid distracted walking! The use of electronic devices decrease your
awareness and you are less likely to recognize traffic danger, tripping
hazards, or passing joggers and bikers.

respite care as they caregive their loved ones. Are you
willing to help occasionally or on a once a week basis?
There are parishioners who need a visit around
lunchtime to help prepare a meal or just spend time
with them occasionally or on a once a week basis. Are
you willing to be a presence for them? There are
parishioners who need an occasional ride to the store,
to a doctor’s appointment, etc. Can you provide a ride
occasionally?
If you are willing to respond in any way, please contact
Sr. M. Faith, 412-833-1240, [email protected]. Having a
number of people to call when the occasion arises helps
me to better respond to parishioners’ needs. Thank you
for considering this. Your response is a great way to
live out the Corporal Works of Mercy.
