The Holy Souls

The Church dedicates the month of November to the Holy Souls in Purgatory and ex-horts us to pray for the release of those souls. I invite you to make this your daily

prayer for the month. Why? Because the Holy Souls cannot help themselves, but our prayers can relieve their suf-fering, and the Church teaches us that it is a great Spiritual Work of Mercy to pray for the living and the dead. St. Gertrude the Great, a thirteenth century mystic known for her devotion and dedication to the Holy Souls, shares with us a vision: In one vision, Our Lord tells Gertrude that He longs for someone to ask Him to release souls from purgatory, just as a king who imprisons a friend for justice’s sake hopes that someone will beg for mercy for his friend. Jesus ends with: “I accept with highest pleasure what is offered to Me for the poor souls, for I long inexpressibly to have near Me those for whom I paid so great a price. By the prayers of thy loving soul, I am induced to free a prisoner from pur-gatory as often as thou dost move thy tongue to utter a word of prayer.” In another vision she was given the prayer which Our Lord told her would release 1000 Souls from Purgatory eve-ry time it is said with love and devotion. “Eternal Father, I offer You the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus Christ, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, those in the Universal Church, in my home, and in my family.”

Have you been away from the Church for a while? Have you ever thought

about returning?

If so, we would like to welcome you back to Saint John Bosco. We have a special ministry for people

just like you who have been away from the Church. Please join us for a 4 week series that begins

Monday, 4/9/18, at 7PM in the Parish Center. Please consider dropping by to see what it is all

about. We would like to address your questions and make you feel at home once more in the Catholic

Church. Registration is recommended. For more information, please contact 215.672.7280 or

National Vocation Awareness Week is an annual week-long celebration (11/5-11/11) of the Catholic Church in the US dedicated to promote vocations to

the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. Please ask Our Lord for more

dedicated holy priests, deacons and consecrated men and women. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ,

supported by our faith community and respond generously to God’s gift of a vocation. Let us pray:

“O, God, You have asked us to pray for vocations; that there might be young men and women willing to give their lives for the sake of souls. Hear our prayer and

the prayers of your Church and send us good and holy priests and religious. We offer you this day, all we

shall think, do or say for this intention, through Christ, Our Lord, Amen.” (USCCB)

“The music tells the story – the story changes lives!”

THE CROSS AND THE LIGHT is coming to St. John Bosco. Thurs., 3/8:10 AM and 7PM,

Fri., 3/9:10 AM & 7 PM, and Sat., 3/10: 1 PM and 7PM! It’s not just a show; it is an intentional encounter event.

Religious inspiration comes in many forms. Kelly Garver Nieto’s hit her like a ton of Babylon bricks while she was

attending her first-ever Good Friday service in 2000. It was while praying the Stations of the Cross, which uses 14 sequential images to depict the crucifixion of Jesus,

that the former nonbeliever experienced what she calls a “life-changing vision.” “I looked at the altar and saw all

the details of this grand theatrical production,” the entertainer and former Miss Michigan remembers. “And I heard God say, ‘This is why you are here.’ I knew in

my soul that this would become my life’s mission.”

Please like The Cross and the Light on Facebook! For more information check out their website

Encountering Christ Anew: The Cross and the Light!

Mel Gibson’s, The Passion of the Christ, gave us a glimpse into Christ’s last twelve hours on earth. The movie took the world by storm as it delivered a powerful experience that brought the Scriptures to life! It helped us

appreciate the depth of Christ’s suffering and what He accomplished for our salvation. Film, music, and drama have that capacity: to touch the heart and spark conversion. We are blessed to have a similar opportunity to encounter Christ anew through The Cross and the Light this Lent here at Saint John Bosco. Have you ever

wondered what it would have been like to witness the political tensions, chaos, and drama of the week leading up to Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection? What would it have been like to see the risen Christ and experience the power of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost? The Cross and the Light will help you experience these things and more. The Cross and the Light is an international, critically acclaimed musical and video surround experience of the greatest love story of all time. Msgr. Gary Smetanka hosted the show in 2015 and 2016 at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Michigan and had this to say: “The Cross and the Light opens the

floodgates of God’s mercy and love…You can’t deliver the Good News of Jesus in a more dynamic and sensational way in our present time! All ages will be drawn to Jesus and His unconditional love for each and every person.” Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the joy of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

In Thanksgiving for the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima we will recite the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel beginning the 1st Sunday of Advent, Dec. 3 (new liturgical year). The prayer will be recited prior to Mass at the end of the public announcements. This will be done at all

the Sunday Masses this coming year. Below is the prayer to St Michael, please cut it out and bring it with you at mass each week so you can join us in prayer.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness

and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;

and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Divine Power of God -

cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking

the ruin of souls. Amen.

Here's a Novel Idea: You are in-vited to join the SJB Book
