Dear Parishioners of Saint John Bosco Church, We are delighted to invite you to see and purchase handmade religious articles made by the Sisters of St. Elisabeth Convent (Belarus). The exposition will take place on 8/20/19. Sisterhood of St. Elisabeth was founded in 1996. Our missionary began in a National mental hospital located not far from the Convent. Sis-ters take care of mentally challenged children and adults. Life of the child with diagnoses such as Down syndrome, birth traumas or congenital physical defects may be quite short and it is painful to see them suffer-ing. Also the adult patients need constant support ow-ing to the fact that their illnesses make it impossible for them to adapt socially. In the recent years, a shelter and house of Labor for former drug and alcohol ad-dicted people was organized 20 miles away from the Convent. A lot of homeless, struggling and lost people get a chance for new start in life to find the God. In order to help these people some workshops were orga-nized on the premises of the Convent where vulnera-ble people have a possibility to express themselves in art for God working together with nuns and sisters and making icons (including hand painted), crosses, cruci-fixes, wood carvings, embroidered and ceramic gifts, rosaries and vestments. All these goods made with love and prayer bring blessings to their owners. We are happy and thanking God for the opportunity to introduce and offer them to you. With Love in Christ, Sisters of St. Elisabeth Convent

My Grandmother Mary Webster!

My Grandmother’s love was expressed by the values she taught me. She was an honest, dependable person who worked until she was 80 as a part time cashier. My grandmother was able, through the grace of God to cope and survive. As a little girl, Mary survived

falling out of a 3-story window. Many years later in her adult years, she was behind the pantry door when the stove exploded, engulfing the house with flames. She was lucky to have escaped. Her most uncommon survival experience happened as follows: Mary and her brother discovered a pistol in the coat pocket of

one of the customers in her father’s barber shop. They both grabbed it and in the skirmish, Mary was shot in

her left shoulder. The bullet was never removed. As an adult, an x-ray showed that the bullet was now in her

right ribcage. In her early 90’s an x-ray for an injury to her right arm prompted the doctor to ask if Mary was

in the war because he saw the bullet in her right elbow. My grandmother’s history tells us that “our hours” are in God’s hands. He gave her a long life.

She reflected God’s love by sharing it with me through her example. My grandmother Mary was called to her

heavenly home at the age of 102. ~

Thank you to Lois for telling us what makes her grandmother a legend in her family! We celebrated the

feast of Saints Anne and Saints Joachim this past week. They are the grandparents of Jesus. God Bless

all Grandparents.

Catholic Gas Sister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agency, was making her rounds. She was visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it, a gas station was just a block away. She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been loaned out, but she could wait until it was returned. Since Sister Mary Ann was on the way to see a patient, she decided not to wait and walked back to her car. She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient. Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gasoline, and carried the full bedpan back to her car. As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two men watched from across the street. One of them turned to the other and said, “If it starts, I'm becoming Catholic.”

We welcome Catholics with Celiac Disease to the Table of the Lord. Low-gluten Communion hosts are

available at all weekend liturgies to those suffering from Celiac Sprue disease. SJB has purchased a pyx specifically for the low-gluten hosts. The pyx and the low-gluten hosts are kept in the Vault in the Sacristy. When you arrive for Mass, go first to the Sacristy. Let the Sacristan know that you will need a low-gluten host. The Sacristan will make sure that the pyx and the low-gluten host is placed on the

credence table. The pyx will be brought to the altar when it is prepared for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The low-gluten hosts are consecrated at the same time as the regular hosts.

When you reach the Presider during the Communion Procession, whisper to him that you will need to

receive a low-gluten host.

During this Extraordinary Year of Mission, Saint John Bosco is honoring St. Paul in a special way!

St. Paul’s entire life can be explained in terms of 1 experience—his meeting with Jesus on the road to Da-mascus. Paul’s life became a tireless proclaiming and living out of the message of the cross: Christians die baptismally to sin and are buried with Christ; they are dead to all that is sinful and unredeemed in the world. They are made into a new creation, already sharing Christ’s victory and someday to rise from the dead like him. Through this risen Christ the Father pours out the Spirit on them, making them completely new. So Paul’s great message to the world was: You are saved entirely by God, not by anything you can do. Saving faith is the gift of total, free, personal and loving com-mitment to Christ, a commitment that then bears fruit in more “works” than the Law could ever contemplate.

Faith: The Next Generation – Pass it on. Boldly go where many have gone before and help pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith! The Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) is in need of volunteers. You can help by becoming a catechist or an aide. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will learn and grow as well! “A catechist is faith, hope and love attached to arms and legs, aches and pains, family duties and not enough time. A cate-chist is an ordinary person who is extraordinary because he or she teaches as Jesus did. A catechist is faithful to the past, open to the future, but especially dedicated to deepening the of the present generation”. If interested, please contact the Parish Office 215-672-7280 to arrange an appointment with Father Kramer.

From the Faith Formation Office…. Fostering a love of reading has many rewards! Giving a child a love of reading is really one of those great parental gifts that often go unnoticed. Books open the doors to worlds that enrich the imagination, embolden the spirit and enliven the soul. A good book becomes a part of a child’s acclimation to the world and the words on the pages can live on long after the book is closed. Since we want our kids to stay engaged in their Faith and keep reading over the summer, why not combine the two with faith-based books? Help your children grow in character and embrace the beauty and wonder of the Faith. Check out FORMED for kids where you can find great books that will guide your children as they grow in faith and virtue. Go to sjbhatboro.formed.org to sign up (it’s free)!

Each child enrolled in Saint John Bosco PREP, should complete Mass Reflection Forms. This activity provides an oppor-tunity to deepen our awareness of and appreciation for the Mass and to take a closer look at what we are doing when we gather for Mass on Sunday and the ways each of us participate. Regular attendance at Mass and daily prayer are necessary to the de-

velopment of your child’s faith formation and is expected of all children. Make it a family activity! We ask that you help your child fill out the Mass Reflection Form (after Mass, not during Mass) by sharing thoughts about the questions. It is okay and suggested that parents and siblings get in on it! The forms can be found on the Bosco Website. But remember to allow your

child to do the work. Please place completed forms in the basket in the main lobby of Church. Thank you.

Remain in My Love is a 3 year Archdiocesan initiative for the renewal of marriage and family life. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is hoping that this new program will reach out to couples after their marriage as a continuation of the conversation that marriage prep started. We firmly believe that healthy marriages strengthen the family; family strengthens the church; strengthen the Church and then you can change the world. Each month check out the special message posted in this space to help you keep your marriage growing in love and joy, with opportunities for enrichment, fellowship, support and spiritual formation.

Look to the Holy Family! Every family should look to the icon of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Its daily life had its share of burdens and even nightmares, as when they met with Herod’s implacable violence. What challenge in your family life are you facing right now in which you need more courage and serenity? How can the Holy Family’s example help you? Let us Pray: Father, be with our family as we navigate our challenges. Teach us to trust in your plans and remember your faithful-ness. We put our sufferings and fears, our hopes and dreams, into your hands. Be with everyone who suffers, especially those who are alone. Make our family, like the Holy Family, a place of prayer and love—and a refuge for others who suffer. Mary, help us to ponder, as you did, the meaning of our experiences, especially when we don’t fully understand the circumstances in our lives. This selection is from Prayers for Catholic Couples (The Word Among Us Press, 2017).

Addictions touch many people’s lives. We all know someone who is affected by addiction of some kind. On the 2nd Friday of each month all are invited to gather in the Adoration Chapel at 9:15 am (after morning Mass) for Rosary. Come to pray for a loved one, yourself, or

even a stranger who is living in the grasp of an addiction. Come together to support those in recovery and to pray

for those struggling with addictions. When we come together, great things can happen. When we come together to pray the Rosary, even

greater things can happen. The Rosary has the power to impact the lives of our

loved ones, our communities and our nation. Prayer can change everything! Please join us.

We have an amazing opportunity right here at Saint John Bosco in being able to go into our Saint Theresa Adoration Chapel Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 7 PM to adore Jesus in

the Blessed Sacrament. We as Catholics believe in the true presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and He is there waiting for us to come and spend time with Him. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Shouldn’t we be waiting for an opportunity to spend time with Him? There are times when no one is present in our chapel when

the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. Will you sign up as a scheduled adorer for just one hour a week so Our Lord is never alone? Lent is a wonderful time to begin a deeper relationship with our Lord. The spiritual master St. Al-

phonsus Liguori says: “Let it be known that by means of a quarter-hour of prayer in front of the host you will per-haps gain more than by all other spiritual exercise throughout the whole day.” Imagine then what an hour will do. You may wonder what am I supposed to do when I visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Do I need to say special prayers? The answer is you are there simply to spend time with Jesus. Some people have certain prayers they like to say silently, others like to pray a rosary, some like to read from the Bible and mediate on what they just read, or you may just want to sit in silence with your friend, Jesus, and open your mind and heart to wherever He is lead-ing you. To sign up to be a Scheduled Adorer for one hour a week or if you just would like to know more about

this wonderful opportunity please contact the Adoration Parish Coordinators: Mary Cole [email protected] or Peachy Viviano 215-674-9713.

We are hosting a unique SJB Photo Scavenger Hunt….with a twist. A picture of an icon will be

posted the 2nd Friday of every month (for 6 months) on the Bosco Facebook page. Tell us where in our church

this work of art, statue, painting or sculpture can be found. Submit your answer on the Bosco FB page. It’s a simple yet fun way to get to know our church with

this educational challenge. A winner will be chosen at random from the pool of entries who answered cor-rectly. The winner will receive Festival Bosco Bucks. Good luck to all the participants. Congratulations to

Maryann Wilkowski-our third winner!

R - C - I - A What comes to mind when you hear the letters R-C-I-A? Many know these letters to mean the Rite of Christian Initia-tion of Adults, the usual way for non-Catholic adults to become full members of the Church, the Body of Christ. What surprises many Catholics, however, is that RCIA involves the whole parish. Long before the saying “it takes a village to raise a child” became popular, Christians knew and still know it takes the Holy Spirit and a parish to form new mem-bers. We are blessed to have adults inquiring and preparing to become full members of the Body of Christ, a very good sign of a lively parish. Yet this now challenges each of us as members of Saint John Bosco. How do we, both new and lifelong members, stay alive and continue maturing as disciples of Jesus?

1. In your daily prayers, always include a prayer for Saint John Bosco Parish that we may do what Jesus has entrusted to us through the Grace of the Holy Spirit to do the will of God our Father.

2. If you know a family member or friend who has expressed some desire to become a Catholic Christian, bring her or him to an RCIA gathering. We meet each Sunday after the 8:00am Mass in the Parish Center. In the early part of RCIA, there are no commitments. Come and see what and Who RCIA is all about.

3. Consider a role in RCIA. We need parishioners to serve as catechists, to help with hospitality and (somewhat urgent-ly) to serve as sponsors. If you do not feel comfortable being a catechist or sponsor, we certain welcome and need your presence as a witness to life of the Holy Spirit acting in all our lives. Your quiet and gentle presence is a powerful testi-mony of faith in Jesus Christ.

If you have questions, send an email [email protected] or come to the Parish Center after the 8:00am Mass on a Sunday. Over the years, parishioners have mentioned that participating in RCIA contributed significantly in growing as mature disciples of Jesus Christ.
