Dear Friends in Christ,
There are some topics that will almost always get a response from people. Understanding,
confusion, irrita<on, agreement, insight and disagreement are among the most common. Then
there is the ques<on of <ming. To some, there is never a good <me. For others, no ma>er
the frequency, it is either too o?en or not o?en enough. Then there are people who simply
don’t care or see the importance. And what is that subject that causes such a response?
Church finances, of course.
A few remarks to give a baseline understanding. Our parish is greatly blessed in every way.
For this, we first give thanks and praise to God for His generosity to us. We are indeed greatly
blessed. We are also immensely grateful to every single one of our parishioners who
generously support our parish and enable all the great things to take place here through
their prayers, dedicaon and financial sacrifices. We all owe a debt of gra<tude to our staff
for their efforts in serving our parish community. Very li>le could be done without them. In a
par<cular way, we are most grateful to our Finance and Business Office staff (Belinda LeBouef,
Vivian Maestas, Kim Riley and Pete Prados) and our Parish Finance Council (John Schell, Randy
Rainey, Bob Hodgson, Phil Rider and Stuart Hendrix) for their hard work, wise counsel,
guidance and oversight. We will close out our books on June 30th
and will make our Financial
Report as part of our Annual Report to the Parish in the early Fall.
This was a rough year in many ways, not just financially. But God in His great love and mercy
has blessed us and enabled us to get through it. Our parish income is down. We are currently
at 2012-13 income levels. Unfortunately, expenses are not. Due to the ac<ons (staff
reduc<ons, budget cuts and use of savings) taken immediately in the a?ermath of the flood,
we were able to avoid a deficit. While we have had a par<al recovery in our collec<ons over
the months since the flood, income remains down. In the twelve-month period from May
2017 to April 2018, 38% of parishioners reduced their weekly giving and 34% have no record of
giving. 3% of parishioners kept their giving the same as the previous year and 25% increased
their weekly giving. ONLY 23% OF PARISHIONERS CONTRIBUTE AN AVERAGE OF $25 OR MORE
PER WEEK ($1300 per year).
If your home was flooded, you lost your job or suffered a financial set back, by all means it is
understandable that your financial support to the mission of the church cannot be what it was.
Please do not feel guilty. Thank you for your sacrifices and know of our prayers and support
for you. If you are on a fixed income or find yourself in a tough financial situa<on and are
doing the best you can, thank you for your generosity. If you were blessed and spared these
struggles, if your stock porNolio did well, if you got a raise, if you are blessed with a job, or if
you are financially in good shape, Thank God!
It is a good thing for all of us to annually examine our level of financial support to the parish.
Does our level of support reflect God’s blessings to us and our family? Does it reflect our
gra<tude to the Lord? Does our financial support reflect our commitment to the mission of the
Church? The Lord does not ask for equal gi?s, He does ask for sacrifice. When considering our
stewardship, we need to ask ourselves if our support is truly sacrificial. Is our giving an act of
faith and love? The scriptures teach that we should give purposefully, propor<onally and
deliberately and that our giving be joyful. Does your giving reflect these biblical teachings?
Money is not the most important aspect of our faith. But money is important. It is important
in how we use it. Like all of God’s gi?s to us, we are to use our gi?s to do good. Thank you to
all who so generously enable our parish to do good for so many to the glory of God!

Help us replace the children’s playground
The Parish playground for children, which for 30 years gave enjoyment to the
children of our parish and surrounding neighborhood. It was totally destroyed
and Insurance is not covering the loss.
The replacement cost is $120,000. Can you help defray these costs and help us to
provide a safe and fun place for our children to play? Gi?s of any size are
appreciated and needed.
For dona3on and informa3on, please contact the Parish Office at 281-497-1500.
Prudence, Safety and Security From <me to <me there will be individuals who a>empt to panhandle on our campus. We have an excellent
Social Services Ministry and our parish helps thousands of people in need. Panhandling is not allowed on
campus. We ask that you never give to these individuals on campus. Instead please direct them to our Social
Services. If you no<ce someone panhandling please inform a staff member or security. We want to help, but in
the proper way. As the saying goes, Give real change not spare change!
This is one of the <mes of year that safety and security become issues. In church and at all <mes, please be
prudent. Some<mes people see others at church as “easy marks”. Do not leave purses, phones wallets or other
valuables una>ended – even at mass. While we are sinners and in need of God’s mercy, we don’t want to tempt
others who may have not yet go>en to the repentance and conversion part!
Part of living our faith is charity. We must all remember to prac<ce charity at all <mes, this includes when we
are in our cars. When driving in the parking lot and when driving through the neighborhood especially a?er
mass, please drive with cau<on, courtesy and charity. Kids will soon be out of school, so please exercise special
a>en<on when driving. Pay a>en<on to the road, no tex<ng while driving, don’t be distracted on the phone,
slowdown in the neighborhood and remember to say a prayer to ask for God’s protec<on.

God Himself showed us the importance of taking a break from
work when he created the heavens and the earth and rested
on the seventh day. If you are lucky enough to be able to get
away to take a vaca<on, please enjoy yourselves and have a
great <me. As a friendly reminder, there is no vaca<on from
a>endance at Mass. God never ceases to provide for us and
we can never cease praising Him for His goodness to us. If you

the Lord’s Day holy by a>ending Mass every Sunday. In fact,
a>ending a weekday Mass during your vaca<on is a wonderful

Houston Heat
Summer is here and so is the heat and humidity. While we
are all looking for ways to beat the heat, we should also
remember that we never do so by wearing inappropriate
are to church. If our clothing is appropriate for the beach
or the back yard barbeque, it is probably not appropriate for
Holy Mass! How we dress is an outward sign of the respect
we give to our ac<ons.
We will work extra hard to make sure that the air
condi<oning will make us comfortable as we come and
praise God at Mass all summer long.

St. Anthony of Padua’s feast day is Tuesday, June 13. Anthony, born Fernando
Martins, in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195, joined the Augustinian order giving up a life
of wealth and power. Later when the bodies of the first Franciscan martyrs went
through the Portuguese city where he was stationed, Fernando was filled with an
intense longing to be one of those who die for the Good News. Shortly thereafter
Fernando received permission to enter the Franciscan Order, and took the name of
Anthony. Recognized as a great person of prayer, gifted Scripture and theology
scholar, Anthony was the first friar to teach theology to other friars. Soon he was
called from that post to preach to the Albigensians in France to convert and recover
those who had been misled by their heresy which denied
Christ’s divinity. Anthony was 35 years old when he died
and was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius
XII in 1946.
