Fifth Sunday of Easter – May 10, 2020 Mother’s Day
Dear Friends,
In our Gospel this Sunday, Our Lord Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have also faith in me.” One of the great gifts we have been given is our Catholic faith.
On the day of our Baptism, among other good gifts, we receive the supernatural virtues of faith, hope, and charity. These three virtues are called the “theological” virtues, because they come from God (as Gift) and they are ordered to God as He is the object of our faith, our hope, and our love.
Sometimes we can unintentionally take for granted wonderful gifts, and so, from time to time, it’s beneficial to recall and appreciate precious gifts like our faith, our mothers, and our fathers. That’s why I like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. We have received such a rich and special blessing in our parents and we can never grow tired of appreciating their whole-hearted sacrifices and their unconditional love. In this holy season of Easter, it’s especially fitting that we reflect upon the importance of the gift of faith.
When we speak about faith, theologians make a distinction between objective faith (i.e., what we believe) and subjective faith (how we believe – how we cognitively come to accept some truth). The Creed is an expression of our objective faith; the Creed expresses the content of our faith – what we believe. For example, We believe in one God, Father, Son, and Spirit, etc.
When we talk about subjective faith, we are speaking about the way we come to apprehend a truth. Thus, when we say we believe it, it means we have received this truth into our intellect aided by faith and accepted it with our will. So, faith understood subjectively is the infused virtue (or a good habit) which perfects the human intellect. Since grace always builds on nature, we must first appreciate how the human intellect is naturally ordered to know the truth. But when the human intellect is elevated by power of faith, it is now capable of knowing supernatural truths, truths beyond the comprehension of the finite human intellect unaided. While sin has a way of distorting the intellect, faith has a way of guiding the intellect to truth.
Faith allows us to see with greater clarity the eternal things of God. Someone passing by can look upon a little child playing in the mud and only see a messy child, but the child’s mother can look upon the same child with unbounded joy. The difference is not in the child, but in the one who sees. One can see superficially, while the other is able to see more deeply – something more. In a similar way, one who looks at the world with reason alone can see some truths of the world, but the one who looks upon reality with reason illumined by faith is able to see something more.
So, we take a moment from our busy lives today to reflect upon and appreciate the great gift of our Catholic faith, the gift that allows us to see more truth, to do more good, and to appreciate more beauty. Traditionally, Catholics in their daily prayers pray the Act of faith.

O my God, I firmly believe that You are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; I believe that Your Divine Son became man, and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because You have revealed them, who cannot deceive nor be deceived. Amen.
I take this opportunity to offer sincere best wishes to all our mothers as we join in our national holiday in saluting mothers on this Mother’s Day. In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May to be celebrated as a national holiday honoring all mothers.
Anna Jarvis, who worked diligently to establish the national holiday for mothers, argued that our mothers were incredibly important because each mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”. Consequently, celebrating Mother’s Day has become a beautiful civil holiday for us Americans for the past century.
Providentially, the civil holiday falls within the fifty days of Easter Season marked by joy and during the month of May, which is beautifully enhanced with special devotion to Mary, the Mother of God.
When we reflect upon God’s plan for the human family, we can wonder what mind could have ever invented Motherhood? Surely the special blessing and goodness of motherhood comes from the wise mind of a loving God. So, on this Mother’s Day, our hearts are rightly filled with love and gratitude for the extraordinary women we call mothers.
I take this opportunity to extend to all of our wonderful mothers our warmest and prayerful best wishes for a very special Mother’s Day celebration with your loved ones. In particular, I extend a special note of joyful congratulations to those women who are celebrating their first Mother’s Day.
For many, like me, our mothers are in heaven with God. But this does not dim our gratitude to God for our mothers, for whom we offer special prayers of thanksgiving on this day. We rightly celebrate our mothers in heaven who by the providential grace of God now serve as powerful intercessors for their dear families. I wish you all a joyful and happy celebration on this Mother’s Day!
Let us strive together to grow in holiness! More good things to come! Have a happy week ahead!

Sacrament of Confession Available
The Sacrament of Confession will again be available on Thursday, May 14, 2020, from 1:30 - 2:30 PM at Church.
Fr. Donovan will be sitting near the handi-cap side entrance of the Church. Par ish-ioners will be able to have Confession from their car. More details are available on the parish website www.sjvgladwyne.com.

Parish Emergency Food Program We have launched a parish crisis food assis-tance program. We invite anyone in our parish who needs help to call us at the rectory at 610-642-0938. In particular, if you are elderly or at particular risk due to underlying medical issues and you are unable to get necessary groceries, please call the rectory. Our dedicated staff will obtain the needed food - shopping for you and bringing it to your door. We want everyone to stay safe and have all necessities during this crisis.

Caring for Friends Food Drop Off We continue our parish efforts to provide food for the needy through our Caring for Friends Food Program. Now, more than ever, these meals are needed to support our Philadelphia Com-munity!
A drop-off station for any frozen prepared meals will be available at St. John Vianney on Thursday, May 14th, from 2:30 PM - 3:00 PM. A table will be prepared in the church parking lot by the entrance between the Church and the Parish House. Once you pull up to the table with your car, you can open your window and drop off your frozen meals. Likewise, you can pick up a plastic bag of additional empty trays for future meals at that time as well.
If you have not participated in Caring for Friends, we invite you to come to the drop off station on Thursday and pick up empty trays which can be filled with frozen meals for the next week.
Our staff will gather and disinfect the frozen meals before dropping them off with Caring for Friends. Thank you for your continued support!

Friday from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM for private prayer. Please continue to adhere to social distancing guidelines and we encourage the use of a mask. Group gatherings of any sort are still not permitted, but we invite you to come spend some one-on-one time with our Eucharistic Lord!

Catholic Education and Faith Formation
PREP Update! The 4th Grade PREP class has been meeting for several weeks now through Wednesday afternoon Zoom sessions with their catechists, Dr. Beth Mascio and Mr. Jim Tornetta. The children have covered topics like the Liturgical Year focusing particularly on Lent, the Triduum, and Easter. Most recently, the 4th graders also discussed the Ten Commandments and some bible stories of Jesus’ appearances to his disciples after his resurrection. The children have been very engaged in their religious education despite school and church closures.

A short Mother’s Day reflection from St John Paul II
on Mary and the glory of womanhood
For every Christian, for every human being, Mary is the one who first “believed,” and precisely with her faith as Spouse and Mother she wishes to act upon all those who entrust themselves to her as her children. And it is well known that the more her children persevere and progress in this attitude, the nearer Mary leads them to the “unsearchable riches of Christ” (Eph. 3:8). And to the same degree they recognize more and more clearly the dignity of man in all its fullness and the definitive meaning of his vocation, for “Christ…fully reveals man to man himself. [Gaudium et Spes, 22]”
This Marian dimension of Christian life takes on special importance in relation to women and their status. In fact, femininity has a unique relationship with the Mother of the Redeemer, a subject which can be studied in greater depth elsewhere.* Here I simply wish to note that the figure of Mary of Nazareth sheds light on womanhood as such by the very fact that God, in the sublime event of the Incarnation of his Son, entrusted himself to the ministry, the free and active ministry of a woman. It can thus be said that women, by looking to Mary, find in her the secret of living their femininity with dignity and of achieving their own true advancement. In the light of Mary, the Church sees in the face of women the reflection of a beauty which mirrors the loftiest sentiments of which the human heart is capable: the self-offering totality of love; the strength that is capable of bearing the greatest sorrows; limitless fidelity and tireless devotion to work; the ability to combine penetrating intuition with words of support and encouragement.

SAINTS FOR US! Saint Isidore the Farmer (1070-1130) Feast Day: May 15
Beginning from an early age Saint Isidore entered into the service of a wealthy landowner from Madrid, and worked faithfully on the estate outside the city for the rest of his life. Isidore had deep religious convictions. He rose early in the morning to go to Mass and prayed, as he walked behind the plow throughout the day. His devotion and hard work were appreciated by his employer who dismissed his fellow workers’ complaints that Isidore often showed up late because of lingering in church too long. Isidore and his wife, Maria de la Cabeza (who would also become a saint), became known for their generosity to the poor despite their own very limited means. The poor often would follow Isidore home where they would be given food, often in larger portions than the couple themselves would enjoy. Isidore has become the patron saint of farmers and the patron Saint of Madrid, Spain. He was canonized in 1622 along with four other very notable saints: St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Phillip Neri. Saint Isidore, pray for us.
