The Saint Michael the Archangel organization is coordinating
the September 29 - October 7 pro-life novena for unborn babies.
This multinational novena is a special nine days for the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass to be offered and the Rosary to be prayed
for the following intention: For the protection of unborn human
persons. You may be a part of the September 29 - October 7 pro-
life novena for unborn babies by doing one or both of the follow-
ing: 1) Have the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered at least once
on any day during the novena; 2) Pray one rosary on each
day of the novena. Additional information, including how to
register, is available at the website:
www.SaintMichaelTheArchangelOrganization.org.
Scrip is on sale this weekend August 30-31! What happens to the
money raised from the Scrip program? It’s spent on the students,
the teachers, the school and any of their needs: playground equip-
ment, new computers, laptops, ice cream sundaes for the kids and
staff, and many other small items too numerous to list! All this just
because of parishioners using Scrip cards! We have so many families
other than our SJS families that do not have kids in school, may be
retired, or are even from other towns that help support SJS and we
would like to THANK YOU! If you have any questions on how to
start using Scrip, please contact Stacey Rademan at 690-8537 or
email [email protected]. Congratulations to Kevin Huber, our
newly-elected parish council president.
The St. Anne Sewing Circle quilt-of-the-month winner for August is Kevin Conley.

Message from Sister Cindy
There is a fantastic opportunity for our high school students to participate in on September 14. Jefferson City Youth Conference
(formerly the Youth Rally) will take place at the Cathedral. I do need to know by September 5 which high school students will be attend-
ing. I don’t need the permission form until September 10. My email address is: [email protected]. Sarah Swafford will
be the main speaker and John Angotti will be providing the music for the day. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Gaydos at the end of
the day.
Religious Education: The registration papers are in the back of Church to be picked up if your child will be attending our Pre-
school Sunday School, K-8 CCD, and High School CCD. There is also information about the JCYC (formerly the Youth Rally) which is
for high school students and will be held on September 14. This information is attached to the high school papers.
The first Sunday school class will begin on Sunday, September 21. CCD classes for K-8 and high school students will begin on
Wednesday night, September 10, with a Mass at 7:00 p.m. in Church. There will be a short meeting after Mass. A parent is encouraged
to attend this Mass and meeting.
Vocation Day: Please pray every Wednesday for Vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
RCIA: If anyone is interested in joining the Catholic Church, please contact me for more information. The Rite of Christian
Initiation for Adults involves going to some classes during the year to learn about the Catholic faith. These classes will begin in Septem-
ber.
Happy birthday to Emil Schwartz who celebrates his 95th birthday on September 1. May God bless you and
keep you in His care.
Aiding the Suffering in the Middle East: We will have a special collection for the victims of violence in the Middle East
on the weekend of September 13-14. Our parish is joining churches across the country to help those in Gaza, Iraq and Syria
who have lost their homes, family members, and all sense of security. With millions displaced by conflict and persecution,
the special appeal will support the efforts of Catholic Relief Services and other Catholic agencies already working in those
areas and assisting refugees in neighboring countries. As you know from the news, the need is great so please be generous.
SCHOOL NEWS
Dear Parishioners,
School is in full swing and everyone is getting comfortable with the routine. We have had several volunteers here already help-
ing us out. Thank you to everyone for your support!
The ceiling in the art room where the stage is located is in need of repair. Since it is not heated or cooled on or behind the stage
the ceiling tiles are starting to fall. The current ceiling will probably need to be taken down and drywall put in its place. If anyone would
be willing to help head up this project, please contact me.
Flashing flew off the school over the summer and we need to find out where it came from and put it back in place. If anyone has
the equipment to reach the top of the elementary building and can help with this project, we would greatly appreciate it.
A few reminders:
Picture day is September 11 in the gym.
We are collecting Joe’s Market receipts dated September 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. You can drop them off in a drawer in
the back of church, a box at Joe’s or put them in the frog in the cafeteria.
Achievement testing for grades 1-8 will be the week of September 29 through October 3 with make-up test dates being Octo-
ber 6 and 7. Please say some extra prayers for our students and teachers this week. We also ask that parents make sure their
child gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast. Please try not to schedule doctors’ appointments this week.
If you would like to donate any fresh food from your gardens or any meat that has been processed, we would gladly accept it
for our school lunches.
The locks on the doors on the ramp side of the elementary building have been switched. The outer door is now unlocked while
the inner doors are locked. This is where you can pick up homework for your child if he or she is sick. Thank you to Quaker for doing
this project for us.
Thank you again to everyone who has been helping in the cafeteria, donating items and/or money to purchase items. We are so
blessed and can’t thank you enough for all of your help!
God Bless,
~ Mrs. Tammy Ogden, Principal ([email protected])

From the Pastor’s Pen Dear Parishioners,
If you are one of the many that gets an extra day off this weekend for Labor Day, I hope you are blessed by it.
This weekend is a great time to remember that human labor is a blessing and dignity when it is exercised in cooperation
with God’s will and grace. May all of you that work with your hands and bodies be abundantly blest and know of my
prayers for you. While my work as a priest usually cannot be considered manual labor, I come from a long line of labor-
ers (steelworker, ironworker, textile workers, miner, etc.) and thus have abundant respect for all those that work with their
hands.
You will find attached a summary of our parish finances for the past few years and a tentative budget for this fis-
cal year. The large deficit from two years ago includes the money spent to purchase the convent and thus the parish con-
verted cash assets to property. Last year’s deficit was the result of many factors that included some unexpected expenses
but also some poor planning (income and expenses) on my and other people’s parts. While I cannot guarantee that suc-
ceeding budgets will always be in the black (due to a need for emergency repairs for example), I assure you that the budg-
eting and procedural errors of last year will not happen again. For this coming year, even though a deficit of $27,000 is
initially projected, I believe we have a good chance of at least breaking even. This is because I and the Finance Council
have budgeted very conservatively in our income lines (so as to not be overconfident) and already some medium sized
donations have come to the parish that were unexpected. Also a minimum of parish and school improvements have been
planned for the year, as well as a reduction of staff from last year. It will not be easy to break even this year, but with
everyone’s effort on both the income and expense sides, I believe it is obtainable. For those of you that would like to see
the full report made to the diocese, a couple of copies are in the vestibule. If you would like to see the report of every
expense/check written, let Janice or me know and we will make that available.
Lastly this week (there is much more but not enough room), I would like to direct your attention to the upcoming
Missouri Catholic Conference Annual Assembly held in Jefferson City on Saturday October 4th. This year the theme is
Marriage and Family at the Crossroads (a very timely and important topic). There will be a keynote speaker and a series
of workshops. Informational flyers are in the vestibule and I encourage each of you to consider attending. Every year I
go, I learn something valuable (unfortunately another commitment prevents me this year).
Take care and God bless,
Fr. Mark Smith

a projected deficit around $70K at the end of the month. The parish will have income added on the last Sunday of June from the

with Mrs. Ogden on Wednesday and will be discussing schedules. We have not hired any additional help to replace Ron Helton while
he is on medical leave. This is currently being covered by Harry and Sergio. There will be a few evenings of school cleaning with
the help of parishioners and parents and the date will be announced in the bulletin. Fr. Smith noted Cameron DeGraff is a seminarian
from our diocese and is here for the summer.

repair. During the repair a water line was accidently punctured. The clogged drain was fixed and new seed for grass was planted.
Committee Reports/Responsibilities
a. Pastoral Ministry – Sr. Cindy – Thanks to all the parishioners for the recent donations of $226.92 for the Good Shepherd Food
Pantry. The JCYC youth rally will be on Sunday, Sept 14, at the Cathedral. High school students are encouraged to attend
and information will be posted in the bulletin.

e. Finance – Fr. Smith – the next finance meeting will be on July 9th. We will be looking at the offertory collection and how
much the Cavan Company has increased the offertory collection. There is a reduction of school staff. It decreased by 1 ½
faculty members. There is no longer a computer instructor and the number of homerooms was decreased by one.
f. School Board - Mary Corey - They met last week with the Home and School officers for a meet and greet with Mrs. Ogden.
The school board is planning to establish goals for this year. School improvement plans will be reviewed during the 2014-
2015 school year and improvements need to be made before the next self-study in two years.
g. School – Mrs. Ogden –The chairlift was not working and was repaired. On Thursday there will be an annual inspection of the
chair lift. The gym floor was re-finished last Tuesday. Mrs. Ogden called all parents of kindergarten students last week to let
them know we will have two kindergarten classes. The school will be recycling and looking for volunteers to take the recy-
cling to Fatima. Mrs. Ogden recently met with teachers and staff. She is in the process of ordering books this week. Summer
packets should go out in mid-July. She is currently looking for volunteer(s) to paint Scripture quotes on the school walls.
h. Pastor Report - Fr. Smith
- Hilda House - As of today the Hilda house was officially turned over to the parish for parish use. Fr. Cronin is living at
Westphalia Hills.
- How should the parish utilize the Hilda House? (tabled for further discussion).
- The Hilda House needs a little work- exterior wood work and paint. It will cost less than $1K to make the repairs. Some
furniture was left in the house.
- Propane would be the only expense that is not currently in the budget.
The doors to Church need to be repaired. The donation is from a memorial in memory of Mike Knoll. Father will be speaking soon to
Donnie Kempker in regards to repairing the doors. All four doors to church need some type of repair or replacement.
Schwartze Foundation - Fr. Smith - School requested monies to help pay for teacher salaries for the exploratory classes. Since a computer
class was dropped as one of the exploratory classes, Father will be writing a letter to ask for that funding to be switched to another budget
item.
Blue Diamond called today and will be returning items that have been replated: chalice, ciborium, and patens. The projected cost for this
was $2,000 and will be paid for with memorial monies.
Mass attendance has dropped off in the last few months. We have 190 grade school kids and for the last four weekends the total number at
Mass on a weekend has been 42, 52, 55 and 60 children at Mass.
A tour of the Hilda House will follow the meeting.
The date for the next Parish Council meeting will be August 26, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the School Meeting Room. With no further business
to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Teresa Luebbert motion and Lisa Verslues 2nd.
