SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

SACRAMENT OF

MARRIAGE

November 11, 2018

Alfred Russo &

Allison Fischer

A THANKSGIVING PRAYER

Let us pray… God our Father, graciously accept from your humble people a thankful heart and spirit. Everything we have and are able to share

with others ultimately comes from your love of your creations. Often we think that everything we have is our own creation; we ask you this day to create in us a spirit of gratitude, that we may always know that all good gifts come from you. We ask this through Christ our brother, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

“TAKE A TAG” SHARE THE SPIRIT OF

CHRISTMAS

What better way to prepare our homes and hearts for

Christmas than to share the blessings of that holy season with those in need.

Our Giving Trees, an Advent tradition at Saint Joseph Parish, will be placed in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison

Street entrance on November 21. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely

to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned no later than Sunday, December 16. You may place them under the tree in church or drop them off at the Rectory/Parish Office.

You can help support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25% of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. You can make a donation TODAY (or next Sunday) by writing your check out to “Saint Joseph Church,” memo it “Campaign for Human Development,” and drop it in the collection basket or at the rectory/parish office, or you can use your parish envelope or make your donation through our online giving program. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd/collection

In the United States, one in seven people lives in poverty.

ost merciful mother, you came to tell us of your compassion through St. Juan Diego, whom you called the littlest and dearest of your sons. Give your strength and protection to all who live in poverty today, especially the young, elderly, and vulnerable. Plead for them to the Father, that they might experience the Divine Love tangibly in their daily lives, and that all who work for justice on behalf of the poor might grow in fortitude and humility. In these ways, manifest your charity and concern in our lives, that the weeping of humanity may be heard, and all our suffering, pain, and misfortune may be filled with divine comfort and healing. May we always know the peace of being in the cradle of your arms, and bring us safely to your son, Jesus. Amen

THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 18, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Damien Chazelle’s recent film First Man, which has won high praise from movie critics, is an account of Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon. I haven’t seen the picture, but look forward

to doing so. Besides offering thrilling scenes recreating the July 20, 1969 lunar landing, it explores Armstrong’s family life, including the wrenching way it was affected by the loss of his and his wife Janet’s two-year-old daughter Karen to cancer. Armstrong was both a swaggering supersonic test pilot and a man of considerable self-effacement. His biographer, James R. Hansen, recalled that in the days when Armstrong was a renowned test pilot, “Neil was notorious in his car pool. Betty Love, one of the riders, told me that Neil sat back in the driver’s seat like he was in an easy chair and crossed his left leg over his right knee. He once ran an air-police truck into a ditch. When Neil showed the MPs his I.D., instead of bawling him out, they saluted him. And yet, this celebrated pilot was also unassuming. After the Apollo 11 mission, when photographer Yousuf Karsh and his wife met Armstrong for lunch, Neil questioned the couple about the many countries they had visited. Mrs. Karsh said to him, “But Mr. Armstrong, you’ve walked on the moon. We want to hear about your travels,” to which Armstrong replied, “But that’s the only place I’ve ever been.” Neil Armstrong was a devout Christian. When he visited the Old City of Jerusalem and stood by the Hulda Gate, which leads up to the Temple Mount, he asked whether Jesus had walked on the same steps. When he was assured that this was so, Armstrong said, “I have to tell you, I am more excited stepping on these stones than I was stepping on the moon.” Steven Greydanus, who was recently ordained a permanent deacon for our Archdiocese, is an esteemed film critic and the founder of “Decent Films.” He recently characterized the Armstrong biopic in these beautiful and discerning words:

… First Man is ultimately more about the “man” than the “first.” It’s the story of a dedicated engineer and a gifted pilot who knew and accepted that his commitment to the program and the goal might cost him his life. But it’s also the story of a fragile human being who was never the same after a defining tragedy, who loved his daughter to the moon and back.
