A Reflection from Deacon Dennis Merino

Do not conform yourself to this age….. What is the Hope that belongs to our call? I don’t think that Jesus actually thought that Pete was Satan. But, I can imagine that Peter was being used by Satan and was his instrument to trouble Jesus. The words …”God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you…” A truly human statement and one I can imagine saying. I can imagine Peter’s fear rising up on hearing Jesus speak of His suffering and Death. This is even after following Jesus for three years and hearing Jesus speaking of His suffering and His purpose here on earth. Yet, Peter’s emotions get the better of him and he blurts out his human response to Christ’s words. I believe this hits a human cord with Jesus. It must touch on the deep down fear Jesus had about His own sufferings and which He is trying to control that fear. I can see Jesus’s response to Peter as being very human. I believe we all, at times, forget that Jesus is human just like we all are. He had his fears and anxieties about what was going to happen to Him. For me, this makes His surrendering into God’s will even more poignant. I believed, like us, He lived with His fears, but tried not to dwell on them. So when Peter responds like he does, it triggers Jesus anger just like a human. Matthew ends this discourse with Jesus giving his disciples the great call …” If you want to be with me, deny yourself, pick up your cross, and follow me. He is asking me to lose my life for His sake. Why does He do this? What is it about my cross that will make me His disciple if I carry it? I believe if I carry my cross of suffering, pain, confusion, rejection, disappointment, and fear, it’s not the carrying that matters, but the desire that lies behind it. Like Micah, the prophet has told us, we are walking humbly with the Lord when we seek His will. It is the desire to do His will, the love that prompts us to seek Him that glorifies God. I tell people that I don’t believe I will be judged by how good or bad I am, but how hard I try. It is the trying, the desire, to please God, I believe, that does in fact please Him. It’s not about my or your failing. It is about our love that drives the desire to please Him.

Hosapple as she will take the Cross in September. If you have any questions please call Bob or Margie Coffman at 916.354.1744 .
