Saint Josephine Bakhita Lesson:

A lesson in which the life of St Josephine Bakhita is used to help KS4 students to consider the issue of human trafficking and how to practically and prayerfully tackle the issue.

Lesson Plan

Introduction

Prayer and Action

Slavery is not consigned to the history books. Human trafficking is one of the biggest human rights issues of our time.

What is human trafficking? Is it relevant to my life? How can young people engage with this issue? Is it possible to make a difference for those who are trafficked?

These are just some of the questions which the life of St Josephine Bakhita can help students to address. St Josephine was trafficked a number of times throughout her life and is now the patron saint of trafficked persons.

This 55 minute lesson includes ‘Bakhita’s Prayer’ - a film which was made by Ten Ten Theatre in partnership with the Westminster Vocations Office. We hope your students are inspired and challenged by this lesson so that they can take action to address this often hidden issue of our times.

Slide 1 Introduce the title and objectives of the lesson and ask students to write down the title in bold in their exercise books. Include in your description:

“Today we are going to be thinking about a recent Saint, Josephine Bakhita. She is now the patron Saint of human trafficking so through her story, we will be exploring this human rights issue. We will have an opportunity to discuss the topic in more detail after watching the film.”

Slide 4Play Film – ‘Bakhita’s Prayer’.

“Why do you think we don’t hear more about human trafficking in the news?”

(Possible answers: it is big business, commerce is at stake, all of us are implicated, it is very ‘ugly’ and people don’t want to hear about it)

“How did the experience of being trafficked shape St Josephine Bakhita’s life?”

(Possible answers: she was grateful for it as it was the vehicle to becoming a Christian and knowing God)

“What about the film did you find most striking?”

(Possible answers: Any personal responses might include ‘didn’t know about the issue at all’, ‘so shocking for the people who are trafficked’, ‘the way the girls responded and took action’)

“What did you find most shocking about the film?”

(Possible answers: any personal response)

“What did you think about the story of St Josephine Bakhita?”

(Possible answers: Personal responses reflecting on her story, not knowing about her, being inspired by her etc.)

“Why do you think the issue of human trafficking matters and is personal to each one of us?”

(Possible answers: We are all part of the story e.g. through buying cheap clothes made by those in enforced labour/debt slavery; smoking cannabis occasionally; we are all made in the image and likeness of God and have dignity so we need to be concerned that our brothers and sisters are being treated in such a way)

Slide 5Hand out copies of Appendix 1 (factsheet for reference).

All questions will appear on screen – you can target them as below, if appropriate. The questions can be discussed in pairs or as a whole class. Students can record the questions and their responses in exercise books.

Follow Up DiscussionSlide 5Timing: 7 mins

Slide 6Explain that the pupils may have heard the phrase ‘If not me, who? If not now, when?’ and that it applies to our response to the issue of human trafficking.

“In the film, we hear the phrase ‘thought leads to action’. Watching Bakhita’s Prayer will have inspired much thought in you – including, perhaps, outrage and anger – and you now have the opportunity to use this thought and energy for action on the issue.

How did the girls in the film take action?”

Take responses which may include: creating film, prayer service, assembly

“What are some effective ways to get the message out to others about human trafficking and slavery?”

Take responses which may include: social media, word of mouth, assembly, watching Bakhita’s Prayer etc.

Slide 7

“In the film, you saw examples of how different people and organisations are reaching out to those who have been trafficked.

There are a number of charities across the UK who support victims of human trafficking. You can read about the work of two such groups on the slide:”

Ask a student to read the following text aloud:

“Diocese of Westminster – Caritas Bakhita HouseCaritas Bakhita House provides accommodation, care and rehabilitation for victims of trafficking in the London area and has the following values and principles of action:

• Love - Expressed in compassionate support and long term commitment• Respect - for the gift and dignity of each individual• Community - a welcome which creates friendship and belonging• Spirituality - nurtured by that Joy in creative activity which lifts the spirit The Medaille Trust“The work of the Medaille Trust is the empowerment of women, young men and children, who have been freed from the human-trafficking industry here in the UK, enabling them to regain their dignity and self-worth.We do this by providing safe housing and offering opportunities for physical and psychological healing and rehabilitation. We raise awareness of the plight of those who are enslaved and exploited in the UK and campaign on this issue.”

Slide 8 Click once to show question.

“The only way that charities such as Westminster Caritas Bakhita House and The Medaille Trust can support people who have been trafficked is if they have the funds to do so.

So, we’re now going to think about what we can do as a community to raise awareness and funds for charity.”

Click once and images with ideas will automatically appear one by one.

It is crucial that students devise a practical way to raise money and awareness for either Westminster Caritas Bakhita House or The Medaille Trust. Practically, this will vary from school to school so ask students to choose carefully and ensure that they can follow through on any chosen action either as a class or as individuals.

Some ideas include:• Money Collection • Own clothes day• Bake Sale – St Josephine Bakhita served the Schio convent in Italy by cooking, sewing and attending to the door so a bake sale would be a good way to honour her and raise money• Sell ‘ribbon rags’ of material from old clothes to wear as pins on school uniform (similar to the pink cancer awareness ribbons but made from rags to think of those trafficked into forced labour)• Lead Stations of the Cross from perspective of those who are enslaved (particularly suitable for Lent) A set entitled ‘Liliana’s Story’ by can be found at http://tententheatre.co.uk/downloads/bakhitasprayer/Liliana’s%20Story%20-%20The%20Stations%20of%20the%20Cross.pdf• Prepare and lead an assembly for younger pupils• Prepare and lead a prayer service

Allow approx.15 minutes for students to make a practical plan which will be followed up.

Slide 9Play Reflective Music.

Teacher to read quote from St Josephine Bakhita aloud and invite a short period of silence to reflect on it.

“Let us now say together the prayer for the Feast of St Josephine Bakhita.”

Slide 11

“Let’s look at our Success Criteria for today’s lesson again – discuss your learning from today with your partner.”

Take feedback and then conclude lesson with reminder about any practical details re: fundraising/awareness raising for either Westminster Caritas Bakhita House or The Medaille Trust.

For possible extension work that looks in more detail at the issue of ‘supply and demand’ in relation to human trafficking and also at practical ways we can ensure that we are taking action, you may like to look at a further resource written by Ten Ten Theatre which can be found via this link: http://www.tententheatre.co.uk/slavery - there is a lesson resource at the bottom of the page.
