THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: The Scriptural readings for this Sunday, the Thirtieth in Ordinary Time, begin with a passage from the Book of Sirach where God’s justice is seen as fair to all. In the second reading, from the Second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul speaks of his death as near and recalls God’s strength in his life. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of a Pharisee who is proud and judgmental and a tax collector who is humble and prayer-ful.
ALL SAINTS DAY: The feast of All Saints occurs this coming week on Friday, November 1st. Masses for the feast here at Saint Kilian will be celebrated on Wednes-day afternoon, October 31st, at 4:00 p.m. Please note this time departs from our regular Holy Day Mass sched-ule, but experience has taught us that much later than that does not fit into the schedule of most families for October 31st. Mass will also be celebrated on Friday, November 1st, at 10:00 am, 12:00 noon and 7:00 pm. SPECIAL MASS ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND: November 2nd is All Souls’ Day. Here at Saint Kilian we traditionally celebrate a special Mass on that day and read all the names of those whose names have been placed on the memorial crosses since the last November 2nd. This Mass will take place on Saturday, November 2nd, at 7:00 pm. Please note this is an additional Mass but it fulfills the Sunday obligation. Please consider at-tending this Mass to demonstrate support for those who have lost loved ones in the past year. SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to parishioner, Susan Quimby, at the death her husband and parishioner, Michael Quimby. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. 2020 FELLOWSHIP DINNERS: We are developing the Fellowship Dinner 2020 Calendar. If your family, group, business did not sponsor a dinner in 2019, but would like to do so in 2020, please contact the Leadership Team at [email protected] Information on the dinners can be found on the parish website.
FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry, located in the old church in Mars at the corner of Clark and Cherry Streets, is open every Wednesday from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. The Food Pantry is always appreciative of your donations (please do check to make sure donat-ed items have not expired). This week we are most in need of the following items: Cereal Ketchup Pop-Tarts Juice Boxes Juice Peanut Butter Applesauce Ranch Dressing
FRIDAY MORNING PRAYER GROUP: Please note that the Friday Morning Prayer Group will not be gathering to pray on Friday, November 1st, but
will resume on Friday, November 8th.
FALL ANNULMENT PRESENTATIONS: Divorced Catholics and everyone else who may be inter-ested in learning about the marriage annulment process are welcome to attend one of two free workshops with Jay Conzemius, JCL, judge and moderator of the Dioce-san Tribunal, on Tuesday, November 5th at Saint Kilian (Cranberry Twp, Church Hall) and Thursday, November 7th at Our Lady of Grace (Scott Twp, Keeper Hall). Both sessions are at 7:00-8:00 pm. Representatives will be available after the presentation to answer individual questions and/or to start the process. For more infor-mation go to https://diopitt.org/annulments. Reservations are not required but are requested so that seating ar-rangements can be made. Please register via email at [email protected] or call 412/456-3033.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, the tax collector’s prayer allows God to be God and so allows God to pour mercy into his heart. When we pray and give alms to the poor, we allow God’s mercy to be poured into their hearts.
In the month of October, through your very generous gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring God’s love and mercy to several of our "neighbors in need," by disbursing $3,174.30 to help secure the basic necessities of life; food, housing, clothing, transportation and Rx care. God Bless and thank-you! If you know of a neighbor having difficulties, please con-tact the Society by calling the parish office at 724-625-1664 x2108.

The fifth-grade year has been off to a fantastic start! The Religious theme of our fifth-grade year is sacra-ments. Students have been learning about the three categories of sacraments: Initiation, Healing, and Ser-vice at Communion. Currently we are praying the rosary together to honor Mary. Students have created their own unique design of rosary beads. This is helping them to learn the different prayers and the myster-ies of the rosary.
Our Science classes have been very busy exploring matter and its properties. Some topics we discussed were Atoms, Elements, and Compounds. Students have been exploring how to find the volume and the mass of objects using balance scales. The students explored buoyancy by building boats from recycled materials. It was great fun to see if their creations would sink or float! The students also made an atomic model and researched specific elements on the periodic table in an in-depth research project. Finally, the students ex-perimented with solutions by collecting data, interpreted their results, and presented their findings by mak-ing line graphs.
In Math we are learning to multiply and divide using mental math strategies and rounding. We are also long multiplying and dividing when reading word problems and using decimals. Finally, we are using real pump-kins and their seeds to figure out circumference, height, range, median, and mode.
The students have been exploring the origins of our country in Social Studies. We have been learning about ancient cultures, like the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans. We all love using google earth to visit places like the Great Serpent Mound made by the Mound Builders and Cliff Palace created by the Anasazi.
In Language Arts, we are reading the novel Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. During our novel study we will be discussing what life was like living in Colonial times and learning about the Penobscot Na-tive Americans. Along with our novel, we rec-reated the cabin Matt and his father built, us-ing shoe boxes, popsicle sticks, clay, tissue paper, pipe cleaners and several other sup-plies.
In English class, we’ve been practicing our persuasive writing skills. Our “Don’t Pick Me” pumpkin pieces will persuade pumpkin shoppers to pass by the undesirable pumpkins and save them from being turned into a jack-o-lanterns! The students built the pumpkins that they described, and our hallway is filled with their crea-tions. Our next writing adventure will be personal narratives.
