Let’s Start a Love Epidemic!
2014 has been a wonderful year of life-changing ministry at Saint Mark. We began the year determined to focus on growing in five central focus areas: moving forward with constructing our youth facility, communicating our new brand as a church, renovating our worship center and upgrading our audio/visual capabilities to high definition, developing and training our leaders, and assimilating new members into the worship and ministry culture of Saint Mark. We made great strides in each of these areas and we should celebrate what God has allowed us to do for His glory. The hard work of our staff and volunteers made it possible for our church to make remarkable leaps forward in our five focus areas.
As always, we look forward to another year with great hope and expectation. We live in a world and serve a community with so many deep needs. These needs are both spiritual and practical. As a church, we must be sensitive to the spoken and unspoken cries of our neighbors and do all we can to serve those needs in the power of Jesus Christ. More than ever, the world around us needs to see and hear the love of God. I’m asking you to join me in starting a Love Epidemic! Lets love one another and our community until it becomes contagious.
In 2015, we will focus on spreading Christ’s love by focusing on four areas of emphasis. We will increase our efforts to create a culture in Saint Mark where every person knows they are cared for and valued through assimilation. We will also begin construction on our youth and children’s facility to show the love of Christ to children by helping them develop spiritually and educationally. Thirdly, we will encourage members to become consistently involved in community service beyond special projects by promoting volunteerism and advocacy in issues of social justice. As a fourth area of focus, one to which I am personally committed, we will disciple men to be godly leaders in the home, church, and community.
I can’t wait to see what God will do for and through Saint Mark in 2015!
With all Christian Sincerity,
Pastor Phillip L. Pointer, Sr.

Our Focus in 2014
At the 2013 Watch Night Service, Pastor Pointer introduced to the congregation five focus areas for 2014: Marketing, the DREAM BIG Capital Campaign and Youth Center, Sanctuary Renovations and High Definition (HD) upgrades, Leadership Development, and Life Connections (or Assimilation).
Marketing
Our ministry shifted our focus from what we do to who we are. A new branding identity was introduced and showcased through a new marketing campaign and various outreach events and activites that show how Saint Mark members are growing in their Christian walk.
Children and Youth Center
Our church leaders committed more resources from the budget and expanded the purpose for the center to include serving the varried needs of children throughout our community. The congregation was encouraged to be a part of this process through increased contributions.
Leadership Development
A major emphasis was placed on developing new and current leaders through trainings and workshops.
Renovations & HD Upgrades
High priority was given to updating the sanctuary and upgrading our video technology to high definition.
Life Connections/Assimilation
We added a new ministry division entitled Life Connections, which is designed to connect and engage new and existing members be more active in the Saint Mark family.
Nearly all events and efforts this year were aimed at fulfilling one or more of these focal points. This year’s annual report highlights those focus areas and our accomplishments toward our goals.

Marketing
New Year’s Eve 2013 was a grand celebration as we closed out the old and brought in the new. During this annual end of the year service, we unveiled our new brandmark and tagline for the ministry.
This new identity quickly caught momentum as members embraced the thought of moving
from just focusing on what we do to sharing who we are as a body of believers. Throughout this report you will see how this identity has become a part of the entire fabric of this ministry.
We replaced the main campus signage to reflect the new identity. We also recently updated the imaging on our church vans to match. Branded merchandise in the form of hats and t-shirts has been extremely popular as members have been proud to share the new branding with their circle of influence.

Saint Mark is a family oriented ministry offering ways to grow for the entire family. Our strong youth ministry is a key component for our growing congregation, and it was evident it was time for the youth ministry to update its identity. The new branding was unveiled in May for the Saint Mark Youth Ministry. The updated design speaks to the forward motion of the ministry under the direction of the new Youth Pastor Justin Bilson.
This new year brought with it a new thrust of external advertising in support of the new Saint Mark brandmark. The concept “I Grow” at Saint Mark was introduced through
television and radio advertising. We also introduced new visual advertising in the form of digital signage at the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport and printed advertising featuring the newly branded aesthetic.
In June, during our anniversary celebration we launched our new website which was redesigned to speak to visitors and those who are new to the Christian faith, while keeping members informed on church events and other pertinent information.

Our television broadcast also received a much needed update in branding. The program is now “Growth Factor” and it airs Saturdays at midnight on KARK Channel 4 in Central Arkansas. The new broadcast name and logo are just one more way that we have evolved as a ministry.
Marketing
We launched the Growth Connections News Magazine, a bi-monthly publication designed to keep members and the public abreast of the great things happening at Saint Mark. The magazine also includes celebrations of our members’ achievements and the celebration of our new members.
One of the greatest marketing tools of Saint Mark is outreach. This social arm of the church is a vital part of spreading the message of Jesus Christ and impacting lives. This impact is felt through social programming and events, countless volunteer hours, and partnerships with local and state organizations.
With the understanding that a church cannot claim to be spiritual unless it is social, Saint Mark set out to be more effective in our Outreach efforts to impact the community. This year we partnered with the Arkansas Voter Registration Project to register or update information for those in our congregation.
LOVE EPIDEMIC // 9
During this push, nearly 700 people registered to vote. We didn’t stop there. Pastor Pointer challenged congregants to get to the polls during early voting and even meet him at the polls to cast their votes. The response was great and several people took advantage of the opportunity to exercise their social responsibility. We also offered rides to the polls during the early voting period as well as on election day.
The Back to School Health Fair was a huge success, providing free health screenings, sports physicals, and immunizations to 771 school-age youth. More than 300 volunteers, including medical professionals, gave their time and talents to this annual event. Free backpacks and school supplies were also distributed during this event.
The back to school savings for parents was more than $400,000. The Saint Mark Health Ministry partnered with Walgreen’s, 12th Street Health and Wellness
Center, McDonald’s, Chick-Fil-A, Oak Forrest Cleaners, State Farm,
Goddess Products, Inc., and Arvest Bank for this effort.

For the fourth year, the Outreach Division of our ministry led an awesome community partnership with Arkansas Baptist College, Operation Impact. Members donated and distributed clothing and other items to the community surrounding Arkansas Baptist College for free. Free food was also served during this uplifting outreach experience. The Evangelism Ministry played a major role in this event as teams canvased the neighborhoods sharing the Gospel and inviting the community to visit Saint Mark.
We partnered with Vilonia United Methodist Church and the Arkansas Dream Center following the April EF4 tornado that devastated both Mayflower and Vilonia. Over 250 volunteers assisted with disaster relief efforts showing care and concern for our neighbors. The Men’s Ministry and other volunteers prepared and served food to volunteers and people in the community.
Saint Mark Baptist Church received the American Red Cross Community Service Award during the annual board meeting for it’s $5,000 donation to support relief efforts to the communities of Mayflower and Vilonia.

Saint Mark collected 9,706 boxes of cereal in partnership with the THV Summer Cereal Drive held every year in June. For the past 3 years we have won first place in the drive with our total growing every year.
Free Flu Shot clinics were offered in January and October in partnership with 12th Street Health Wellness Center, Walgreen’s and Arkansas Department of Health.
More than 80 men benefitted from free health screensings and blood pressure monitoring provided by 12th Street Health and Wellness and the American Heart Association.
Our 12th Annual Fall Blood Drive and our annual Easter blood drive yielded more than 100 productive units of whole blood.
Visitation Ministry team made 300 visits to those residing in nursing homes, those who are homebound or in the hospital.
The Raven By The Brook Ministry distributed more than 2,200 food boxes to needy families throughout Pulaski County.
Saint Mark volunteers packed enough rice at the Arkansas Rice Depot to feed more than 7,000 Arkansas families and assembled over 300 meal kits for the Backpacks For Kids program.
Saint Mark men mentored youth at the Mabelvale Elementary School Gentlemen’s CLUB Program. Saint Mark also helped purchase blazers for the students.

The Saint Mark Division 1 Boys basketball team and Division II Girls basketball team won championships in the Independent Christian Sports Association League.
The Co-Ed Softball Teams took first and second place in the City of Little Rock Parks and Recreations Interstate League.
The 13-17 Year-Old Girls Softball Team won first place in the Rosedale/West Central State Tournament Champions.
Our Foreign Missions teams traveled to Pignon, Haiti again this year. Twenty youth accepted Christ.

The church continues to maximize its exposure through our Music and Worship groups. The Sanctuary Choir performed at The White House for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in December 2013. The Sanctuary Choir opened for the Legendary Shirley Ceasar in concert at Second Baptist Church. During the
release of the Disney blockbuster “Frozen,” the choir was invited to be a part of the video montage used to promote the song “Let it Go” on the national ABC morning program, Good Morning America. The choir travelled to Springdale, Arkansas to open for Wess Morgan and sang at the Grand reopening of the Marriott in downtown Little Rock.
The Children & Youth Center was heavily emphasized in 2014 in preparation for the upcoming construction project. The youth are very important to our ministry and up to this point they have had to share classroom and worship space with adult activities. As we strive to tailor their worship experience for their current and future needs, it is imperative that we provide space that is dedicated to their Christian development.
The center will not only serve the youth of Saint Mark, but it will also serve as a
center for the community as we partner with local organizations and businesses for a brighter
future. To this end, we are planning programming that will
make use of the new building throughout the week.

Dream Big Capital Campaign UpdateTo date we have raised $1,733,860 toward the project. In September 2014 we set a six-month goal of $400,000 to ensure that while we build this facility we maintain the ability to support the existing ministries and offerings. We will break ground in spring 2015. In September and October alone, we raised more than $60,000 toward the goal. We encourage everyone to either continue or begin support of this project. You may make contributions through our website at SMARK.ORG, our mobile app, Saint Mark LR, or by envelope in the sanctuary.

to give this worship space a facelift. We knew it was important to bring it to the 21st century to enhance the adult worship experience.
Our Membership is changing and so is the climate of worship and study. With all new LED lighting the atmosphere can instantly change all while keeping the cross at the center of our focus.
With new federal regulations and the growing options for providing services to the public via technology, it has become increasingly important for Saint Mark to stay current with technology. Our previous video equipment and production suite was installed in 1999, and a lot has changed in the world since then. Moving to high definition broadcasting was the inevitable choice.
From the new screens in the sanctuary, additions to the projectors, to new cameras and production equipment; the HD upgrade has allowed us to share God’s message in a more professional way. Our in-house video and Livestream products are now second to none. Very noticeable to our Livestream audience is the upgraded quality of the video and audio as well as the ability to share lyrics and sermon notes directly on their video feed.
The next area we needed to make changes to was our sanctuary. The facility was built in 1981 and Saint Mark moved to campus in January 1994. The balcony and underhang spaces were expansion projects that took place in the 1990’s. We determined 2014 was the time
Sanctuary Renovations/HD Upgrades
The renovations didn’t go unnoticed outside of our church family. Saint Mark was nominated for and won the Solomon Award for “Best Design: Renovation” at the 2014 Worship Facilities and Expo Conference in Dallas, Texas. This honor is not awarded every year. It is only given to those that the committee deems worthy. Saint Mark will be featured in Worship Facilities Magazine in the coming year.

While we make preparations for our new youth and children center we made youthful and cutting edge renovations to the Activity Room of the Education Center. This room primarily hosts the Teen Church Group on Sundays. Wanting to make the space a cool place for the teens, an exciting theme with graffiti style neon and glow in the dark paint combined with black lights and LED lights created one fun and teen-worthy space for worship.
A flat screen TV was also installed to display song lyrics, videos and illustrations also adding to the hi-tech feel of the room.
20 // Annual Report 2014
In 2014, Saint Mark focused on the development of leaders across all sectors of our ministry. Leaders should always be concerned with personal spiritual growth so they can be better servant leaders. It is also imperative that we identify potential leaders and develop them based on their spiritual gifts.
We were excited to have served as a simulcast satellite host site for the 20th Annual Willow Creek Association Global Leadership Summit. This event is the premier training event for leaders from all walks of life. Each year various sites around the country and the world host this major event, which is simulcast from the campus of Willow Creek Church in Barrington Hills, Illinois. The event features the
best of the best in leadership in both the secular and religious arenas. Saint Mark partnered with The Nehemiah Network, a local fellowship of churches and pastors, and Fellowship Bible Church to host this outstanding training opportunity. We welcomed more than 200 people from around the city and state. We are slated to host the event again in August 2015.
Leadership Development
LOVE EPIDEMIC // 21
The Saint Mark Board of Elders, Deacons Ministry and Staff traveled to Dallas, Texas in May for the first ever group leadership retreat. The trip focused on team building, training and fellowship with one other. Included in the training were tours Concord Baptist Church and First Baptist Dallas. The tours provided inspiration and generated ideas on ways to improve the experience for Saint Mark members and guests.
Retreat attendees also participated in a scavenger hunt throughout downtown Dallas. This exercise helped build and strengthen relationships as leaders learned about each others’ strengths and weaknesses through fast-paced, fact-finding team challenges.

We accepted nominations for the office of Deacon from the congregation in August. Once those nominations have been fully processed training for the prospective deacons will begin in 2015. The training process will take 12 to 18 months. It will include shadowing, training sessions and relationship building with the current church leaders.
A training seminar was held for our youth volunteers at the Embassy Suites Hotel. Leaders were encouraged to grow in knowledge and skills so that they would be better equipped to serve the youth. They were also given tools to think creatively in their interactions with the youth.
Also in the youth ministry, volunteers were trained for the AWANA program, which we began offering for our pre-kindergarten through 4th grade youth in November. AWANA is a national youth program formed in 1950, now hosted in more than 30,000 churches around the world. The highly structured program helps develop young children in their Christian faith.
The Soul Care Lay Counseling Ministry has grown from eight counselors to more than thirty. These counselors enjoyed a training workshop facilitated by Pastor Linda Willis of Memphis, Tennessee encouraging them to stay confident, and remain motivated to the calling to counsel. This ministry began by offering only three types of counseling services – marriage, pre-marriage and individual counseling services. In 2014, five new services were added including family, Quality Living Center, Survivors of Sexual Abuse, corporate grief and divorce care.
Our Annual Leadership Workshop was themed “Multiply: Growing Leaders Who Grow People.” More than 100 leaders attended this time of development and focused on ways to be better servants in the church. Guest speakers included pastors and trainers from Central Arkansas. Saint Mark leaders were

encouraged to be better disciples, team members and witnesses in their daily lives. They were also admonished to encourage others to grow in the same way in order to produce more potential leaders.
We are excited for the new calling of God for three of our Associate Ministers who have been promoted to the calling of Senior Pastor. Pastor Frank King, Pastor Ken Martin, and Pastor Gibion Young are all now pastoring in the Central Arkansas area.
The Roddy E. Collins School of Ministry added a new curriculum in Apologetics (defending your faith)
and it attracted many from within our church family and the community.
We continue to add new instructors,
including local pastors, to our
teaching faculty, and enrollment continues to increase from the community.

We also began the important work of focusing on the life cycle of our visitors and members. Like most ministries, our effectiveness in developing lives of believers depends on how well we help members connect
to the body of Christ and to our ministry. Below is the life cycle from visitor to fully integrated member of the Saint Mark family. We will continue to focus on this area in 2015.

New for 2014 were Get in the Grow Sundays. Fifth Sundays throughout the year became special opportunities for members to invite their family and friends to join Saint Mark in worship. Packed with powerful preaching and exciting praise and worship, Get in the Grow was definitely a hit this year. Special guests included Dr. William Curtis, Pastor Charlie Dates, Dr. Charles Goodman, Jr., and Pastor Jeffrey Johnson. Our musical guests were Tonya Baker, Jermia Cannon, Sherri Jones-Moffet, Tim Rogers and the Fellas, and Leon Timbo.

The fourth annual Family Night Out in June and the annual Family Reunion both brought the congregation, our neighbors and friends together for food, fun and fellowship. We held the Family Reunion on our own 14+ acres for the first time and it was a welcomed change. The youth enjoyed activities such as the petting zoo, horseback rides and Joey the Friendly Fire Truck in addition to inflatables and face painting. Adults participated in the increasingly popular kick-ball tournaments in addition to card games and bingo. While the staff served during Family Night Out, the Men’s Ministry hosted the Family Reunion. New this year were small business vendors and dessert trucks.
The Marriage Ministry enjoyed “Soul Food Sunday” to kick off the ministry year. Couples used one of their new “Date Nights” to learn how to Salsa. The Married Couples Workshop was a big hit with over 100 couples present to hear Pastor Pointer as the speaker. He encouraged couples to see marriage as a God idea. He also explained how couples should emulate
God’s hesed character or mercy in their relationships – that including faithfulness, unfailing love, and commitment to covenant.

The Women’s Ministry hit the ground running in 2014 with the Women’s Kickoff “The Seasons of a Woman’s Life” held in January. The meeting style was revamped to afford more women the opportunity to attend the events. More than 100 women were in attendance as we rolled out the activities and events for the year.
The atmosphere at the Women’s Prayer Breakfast in April was electric! Along with a hearty breakfast, a powerful message and singing, women were divided into several groups for more a more intimate time of prayer. The walls were resounding with praise and cries of release through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Some of the other events for 2014 included:
Women’s retreat in St. Louis, Missouri
Ladies Day Out trip to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Fireside Chat
Feeding at Our House a local shelter for the homeless
PINK Event in honor of breast cancer awareness
The Men’s Ministry took their annual trip to the Grizzlies basketball game in Memphis. They played an integral role in the Saint Mark tornado relief efforts, serving food to those from the community and other volunteers in the Vilonia and Mayflower communities. They also began a new study by Tony Evans “Kingdom Man.” Several attended the Men’s Conference in Dallas at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship.

The Golden Saints enjoyed several outings throughout the year including a trip to Branson, Missouri to the Sight and Sound Theatre to see “Jonah.” The story and the beautiful original music kept the saints on the edge of their seats. On another occasion, more than 75 saints journeyed to Abe’s Ole Feed House in Benton for an evening of food and fellowship. The saints also enjoyed the opportunity to pick greens, an annual event graciously hosted by Michael Pettus. A hearty breakfast was served and the seniors had their pick of the fields with collard, turnip and mustard greens.
The Singles’ Ministry held “Straight Talk, No Chaser” where more than 100 singles heard from Pastor Pointer regarding issues singles deal with in their daily lives. He also answered questions from the group to help them better understand God’s calling on their lives during their season of singleness. In August the singles hosted “A Community of One” a time of fellowship designed to bring singles from area churches together for an afternoon of fun, games, and dancing. More than 75 singles participated in this great event.

The second Pastoral Anniversary was indeed special this year as we not only welcomed Pastor Pointer’s father Dr. Carey E. Pointer, Jr. and his good friend in the ministry Pastor Corey Hodges, but also received a special treat in the person of Pastor Pointer’s grandfather, Dr. Carey E. Pointer, Sr. What a great day of celebration as we thanked God for the fruits of the union of pastor and
people.

LOVE EPIDEMIC // 31
We are also excited to celebrate with Pastor Pointer in earning his Doctor of Ministry degree this year from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. In August, he successfully defended his position paper, “Reestablishing a Biblical Understanding of Marriage in the African-American Church
Context through Prophetic Preaching,” and will officially celebrate his graduation in December. We have already benefitted from the wealth of knowledge from his studies during series about marriage and at the Marriage Workshop in August.
