WE ARE A TITHING PARISH

God gives us everything we have and allows us to keep 90% of it for any good purpose. He simply asks that we return the first 10% to Him (5% to the local parish, 5% to God’s other good works, our personal charities) in gratitude. This spirituality of tithing is as old as the Bible itself, and disposes us to make God first in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the tithe, but the tither, not the gift, but the giver—for God!

Tithing -- God’s Plan for Giving “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house and try me in this, says the Lord of Hosts. Shall I not open for you the floodgates of Heaven and pour down blessings upon you without measure?” Malachi 3:10 “Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appear-ance but the Lord looks into the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

Stewardship is a Way of Life How often do we invest our time, talent, and treasure in creat-ing an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, possessions, car, and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talent, and treasure here on earth.

Tithing of Treasure Weekend of March 15, 2020: $6,519.00 Weekend of March 17, 2019: $9,264.00 Children’s Offering for March 15, 2020 (Included in Tithe) : $21.00 High School Offering for March 15, 2020 (Included in Tithe): $10.00 School Offering: $211.00 Building & Maintenance: $15.00 Annual Appeal: $720.00 Human Development/Latin America: $122.00 Aging & Infirmed Priests: $2.00

Tithing Time and Talent Spending Time with God in Prayer: Lent is the season which beckons us to make the Stations of the Cross. Even if you cannot attend this devotion on Fridays, you can make the Stations privately before Mass or even pray the prayers at home, walking with the Savior on the Way to the Cross. Using Talents to build God’s Church: Take a look at the listing of ministries inside the bulletin, and go to the parish website, www.stmarthachurch.com, for a fuller description of each. Surely, you have talents to share with the parish family!

WWEEKLY MEMORIALS The Sanctuary Lamp which burns before the Blessed Sacrament reminds us of the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It would be a wonderful way to memorialize a loved one who now enjoys the heavenly banquet. If you would like the lamp to burn in honor of a loved one, either in Church or in the Rectory Chapel, please send a suggested offering of $10 to the rectory office with the name of the person remembered. We will publish these memorials in the bulletin. In addition, a donation of $25 will help supply the bread and wine which are used for the Eucharist, another fitting memorial.

The Sanctuary Lamp and the Bread and Wine

have been donated this week in memory of

Dear Members of the Parish Family, Today I am writing about two “Halls of Fame.” The earthly one, our Saint Martha Hall of Fame, was

supposed to enshrine new members today after the 8:00 Mass, however, that date has been postponed to May 31. These folks who had a significant effect on the life and vitality of our par-ish, will see their names added to the plaques in the Heritage Room in the pantheon of notable parishioners.

The real “hall of fame” of course is heaven. There,

the names of our heroes, the Saints, are engraved upon the heart of God. Their good deeds resound through the ages and inspire us to want to join this august group. Of course, the only requirement to join this group is to live out our baptismal call to be holy.

Starting the Palm Sunday weekend and lasting until

Wednesday of Holy Week, you will have an opportunity to grow in personal holiness. Mr. Bill Wegner, of Good News International, will conduct a Parish Mission. Father Andy had him do so at his parish some time ago and said he was remark-able. You’ll be invited to the Mission at the weekend Masses, and each evening the Mission service will be held. There will also be a daytime session for folks who do not function well at night, time with the school children, and the opportunity for confession each night. Mark the days on your calendar. Plan to spend this Holy Week like none before. Get ready to join the ultimate Hall of Fame.

May we, like Saint Martha, always be friends of Jesus.

God’s Love, Fr. Al

WINNING THE FIGHT AGAINST THE BILLS Each week, remember that our victory over current bills de-pends on taking in $12,000 or more in the collection. Check the figures posted each week to see how we are doing. Thanks to all whose efforts are helping us in this struggle. Remember to be sure your offering comes every week, even when you are away. Consider electronic giving.

Follow Father Al’s Pastor’s Blog on St. Martha’s facebook page.

WEEKLY PARISH CALENDAR All activities suspended until further notice due to Coro-navirus

COME HOME Under the aegis of our Pastoral Council, members of our vari-ous organizations will spend Lent reaching out to folks we haven’t seen for a while and invite them to “COME HOME.” No shame, no guilt, no judgment– just come home. Please pray this prayer daily for successful visits and a return by our broth-ers and sisters to their spiritual home.

IIntercessory Prayer for Inactive Catholics Christ Jesus, Head of the Body, the Church, You so loved the

world You gave Your life to redeem us and restored us to Your friendship.

Give us, we pray, the grace we need to speak lovingly and

confidently a word of invitation to inactive Catholics to return to the practice of their faith.

Make us instruments of Your welcome and peace. Bring back

to the fold all who have been hardened by the world or wounded by the Church. May they know the joy of

reconciliation with You and join us once more at the Table of the Eucharist.

Use us as messengers of Your love to reach out to inactive

Catholics, to marginalized Catholics, and to anyone searching for a faith community they can call “Home.” Grace Your

Church with new members strong in the practice of their faith and in their devotion to the Eucharist.

Help us grow in love for one another and for the most Holy Name of Jesus in whose Name we offer this prayer. Amen.

PASTORAL COUNCIL NEEDS YOU! St. Martha’s pastoral Council has 3 openings starting Oc-tober 2020. In the next week’s bulletin and in the back of the church, you will find nomination forms. The nomina-tion process begins March 15th and ends April 5th. Please prayerfully consider yourself or someone in the parish who can act as a representative of the parish to the Pastor and help the Pastor address issues to improve the parish. For more information, please see Nancy Cozzi or Kathy O’Neill.

It’s almost here!! It won’t be long now, April 5 through April 8! Our parish mission, being led by Bill Wegner, a Catholic Lay Evangelist, is almost here! Just 2 weeks away! It will truly be a time of renewal and rejoicing for our community. Don’t let these 4 days pass you by and leave you saying, “I wish I had been there.” If you haven’t made your plans yet, do it right now! Stop what-ever you’re doing and put it in your calendar! And re-member, bring a friend!

Do the Bunny Hop Lent is passing quickly and as we prepare for Easter, please remember the needy in our parish community. Scrip or a monetary donation would be appreciated. Mark the envelope: BUNNY HOP and drop it into the collection basket or stop by the rectory during office hours. Thank you for your generosity. Any questions, please call Sister Claire McMahon.

Your Knights of Columbus are asking for donations to replace the broken water fountain on the first floor of the school building. This water fountain is primarily used by our pre-K and Kindergarten children. The cost of the new fountain is $600. We will be collecting from now until April 30, 2020. Please place your donation in an envelope and mark it “REPAIRS” and it will go directly to Art Calvo. You may also hand your donations to any Knight. Mary Queen of Angels-Life made better one project at a time.

PARISH REGISTRATION AND MEMBERSHIP It is important that all Catholics within our boundaries be registered and active members of the parish. Circum-stances sometimes change registration status. If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish. (1) Have you moved away from you parental home (not just for college)? (2) Have you recently changed your marital status? (3) Are you living with your parents, over eight-een, and not receiving your own mailings and envelopes? If any of these apply, please call the rectory office to up-date your registration status. New families moving into the parish can register after any Sunday Mass. Welcome!

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM FOR INFANTS Through Baptism, your children are plunged into the mystery of the Lord’s Death and Resurrection and be-come God’s own children, members of the family we call Church. You may arrange baptism by approaching one of the priests or deacons after Mass. To prepare for this sacred celebration, parents are required (and godpar-ents invited but not required) to attend a Pre-Jordan Session. At this gathering, held on a Thursday evening, May 14, at 7:30 in the rectory, one of the parish clergy and a couple who have presented children for baptism give an overview of the ceremony and theology as well as practical suggestions to enhance your experience of the big day. Consider coming to the class before your baby is born, when things are just a bit less hectic.

“SPOTLIGHT ON ST. MARTHA SCHOOL” Continuation of Teachers’ Blog… My name is Lauren Dodd and I am the 1st grade teacher at St. Martha. I have been teaching for 21 years. I have a daughter in 4th grade at St. Martha and my two daughters in high school are SMS alumni! The first graders are making great progress so far this year! They are becoming fluent readers and super spell-ers! Their Math skills of addition and subtraction are amaz-ing! They love using the SMARTboard to play games while building those skills. We are also using STREAM (Science/Social Studies, Technology, Religion, Engineering/ELA, Art, Math) lessons that help us learn across the curriculum, Our favorite STREAM lesson was when we celebrated “Penguin Day.” The children dressed in black and white. We read many stories about penguins. We wrote poems and solved riddles. The children waddled in Gym class and made pen-gions for Art. Penguins eat fish so we graphed rainbow gold-fish in Math class. We learned about temperature and used the globe to look at the places penguins live. The best part, of course, was eating Oreos, marshmallows and penguin candy! St. Martha Parish School provides excellence in Catholic Education in a nurturing and safe environment and offers classes for Grades Pre-K through 8. Pre-K is available for children who are 3 to 4 years of age before September 1. Our Pre-K students are included in our special classes: Music, Art, Physical Education, Library and Computer Education. Family rates now apply to Pre-K students. KISS– Kindergarten Initiative Scholarship Surprise $1,000 grants are offered to children entering our kindergar-ten for the 2020-2021 school year. This program is available to our Pre-K 4 class of 2020 and students from other schools. Bishop’s Tuition Transfer Grant Program is available to any public, private or charter school student who transfers to St. Martha Parish School. Upon acceptance, eligible students entering grades 2 through 7 will receive $1500 in total tuition grants. This grant is paid over 2 years: $1000 toward their tuition in year one and $500 toward tuition their second year. Parents must complete and submit the financial aid applica-tion (FACTS) and maintain attendance through the first tri-mester. Family Referral Incentive Program: Referring families must complete a referral form and send it in to school. St. Martha Parish School will contact the prospective family to schedule a visit and interview with the family and child/children. The referring family will receive a $500 credit which will be applied once the newly enrolled student has been in school for three months. The credit will be spread evenly among the remaining months of the referring family’s tuition payments. SMS Proud!!!!

40 DAYS FOR LIFE “40 days for life”, Prayer and Witness for Life begins February 26th. During this time, we are asked to pray and fast for the following intentions:

An end to legalized abortion in our country For the mothers who are so desperate they believe abortion is their only option - that they may seek the help that is available For those who work in the abortion industry For our society as a whole, that they may turn away from the culture of death

We are also asked to join in peaceful prayer vigil in front of Planned Parenthood, 2751 Comly Road, Philadelphia. St. Mar-tha’s Parish has agreed to cover the vigil hours from 7 AM to 3 PM on Wednesday, March 25th. Please note the sign up sheets at the church entrances and choose one hour on March 25 . If you wish you may join any of the vigils outside of abortion facilities in the Philadelphia area during the 40 days. Prayer outside an abortion facility is very important and effective. Women do change their minds. For more information call Betty Maier at 215-612-7285

Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats for Healing After Abortion Rachel’s Vineyard is an extraordinary opportunity for any person who struggles with emotional and spiritual pain of past abortion(s). The weekend is a unique and effective process designed specifically to help you ex-perience the mercy and compassion of God. This process is extremely helpful for those who struggle with forgiving themselves or oth-ers. The weekend will help your soul find a voice, and transform the pain of the past into hope. Rachel’s Vine-yard is a “therapy for the soul” which combines a unique and creative process for psychological and spiritual heal-ing. Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries will be hosting a Rachel’s
