From Father Mike’s Desk Here's a phrase: "The Real Presence." Those three words represent one of foundational elements of our Catholic faith. Here's another phrase: "The Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, of Jesus Christ." The second phrase explains the first. That's who's really present -- Jesus. The Body and Blood of Christ -- his true and actual flesh and blood -- is really present under the appearance of bread and wine. As real as an oak tree. Sadly, polling data reveals a declining acceptance of this vital truth. Some of the decline may be explainable by the more relaxed handling of the Eucharist permitted in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. Remembering that the Last Supper was an actual dinner, at which Jesus and the disciples handled the elements of the meal, Catholics are now allowed to receive Communion in the hand and to reverently touch the consecrated Hosts in the course of distributing the Eucharist. Replacing the former practice in which not even an empty chalice or ciborium was to be handled by lay persons, these reforms may have led some to a diminished awe for the Eucharist. There are other reasons, to be sure. Not least was a prolonged failure of the Church to properly instruct the young. In time, these young persons grew into parents who were unable to teach what they did not themselves know. By God's mercy, the worst of these days is over, and our Catholic schools and religious education programs are again teaching the bedrock truths of the faith in strong and understandable terms. There are many pathways to belief. For some, it is necessary to see factual evidence. A bit of Googling will soon bring a person into contact with a great number of Eucharistic miracles over the years. For others, the healing balm of the Eucharist, the infusion of grace, is so apparent that there can be no doubt. Others -- generations of others -- can testify to the certainty they feel when they enter a seemingly empty Catholic church. What they feel is, yes, the Real Presence of Christ … because (except for a few hours between Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigil) no Catholic church is ever empty. In the tumult of a city, amidst the roar of traffic and the burning neon lights, there is always a small red light burning silently next to a Tabernacle. In the rolling and wind-swept hills that surround a tiny country church, there is always a small red light burning silently next to a Tabernacle. In the quiet monasteries at Gethsemani and New Melleray where I have been blessed to go on retreat, there is always a small red light burning silently next to a Tabernacle. I remember a day, years ago, in London. Wandering as tourists one morning, our family walked into Westminster Abbey, the great Anglican church. If you care even a bit about history or literature, you cannot miss this place. Kings and queens are buried all around the building, as are literary giants like Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer, Rudyard Kipling, and many more. Yet, aside from the tourist hordes, there was no life in that great building. That afternoon, we found our way into Westminster Cathedral, the Catholic church of London. Missing were most of the tourists and all the historical and literary monuments. But He was there. We could feel it. The empty church wasn't empty. The red sanctuary light burns every hour of every day at Saint Martha. Our doors open early and are locked late. Seven days a week. Come anytime. Sit in the silence of the church some morning or afternoon. He is present. You'll know it. Spend some time with Him, and feel the peace. You'll never doubt the real-ness of the Real Presence. That's why we're Catholics. Through shining sun and gentle breeze, through storm and rain, through good times and bad. Jesus is in the Eucharist, and the Eucharist can be in us whenever we choose. We are so blest …

V. 32 No. 39 September 28/29, 2019 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sister Anita’s Corner

What is Jesus looking at and his outstretched hand pointing to? The pondering continues when we wonder what the people of all ages are seeing … what vision of today and tomorrow are they taken up with? We have been praying our discipleship prayer all through this past prayer. We are not in the same place as we were a year ago. We, with our lives lived, have journeyed through blessings and sorrows, faith deepened and faith at times seeming to need a lot of tending. Maybe that is truly the only way faith deepens … soil being work takes a lot of hard work … seeds of faith … Loving God, our Father, you invite each of us to share in the life and ministry of your Son, Jesus.

To share in Jesus’s life … seeing what is going on right around us … hearing others cry out … sitting at table with all our companions and sometimes laden with so much goodness and other times with so many questions … going away with Jesus day or night to a more quiet place - away from stress, noise, fears and even crazy fun times to wonder what does it mean to spend time with Jesus in prayer to the Father.

To share in Jesus’ ministry is one of asking what it is that the other wants … “I want to see …” lifting people out of what binds them down… allowing forgiveness and love to be such a deep blessing - not equated to deserving it or earning it … seeking others out in kindness and concern … talking about what moves our hearts and souls.

Send your Holy Spirit … to form… to understand the grace of unselfishness in our day to day commitment … to look around and see a community of disciples with gifts as individual as each one is and yet part of the whole … to guide us in our ordinary and unusual actions.

Through the witness and intercession of Mary, our Beloved Mother … aware of God’s presence … accepting God’s power for good … changing us with our “yes” which is life-long and growing …

“Do whatever he tells you …” thus may murky waters be changed into spirit-lifting wine. Wine to be savored and maybe some kept for all our blessing times and sorrow-filled times … for our discerning and doing. In our hearts and minds, this prayer doesn’t really have an end time, just a deepening into God’s grace time.

Need to Knows:

Ever wonder what the Catholic Faith is all about? Interested in finding out more?? Join us NEXT Sunday, September 22

from 6 to 8 pm for a very informal and informative introduction to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). There is no commitment, this is just a chance to come and see if now is the time for you to begin the journey of growing in your relationship with Christ which may lead to Baptism and Confirmation in the Catholic Faith at the Easter Vigil in April. We have a great team of leaders ready to guide you with stories of how and why they entered the Church, teachings from scripture and how our Bible is so alive and relevant today, as well as the amazing gift of our Catholic Sacraments and Traditions. We will meet in the Saint Kateri Room (just across from the back entrances to the church near the stairway). Look for signs and come and join us. If you would like more information, please email Clinton Warren at [email protected] or call Jackie in the Parish Office.

In a loving, nurturing, Christ-like environment, Saint Martha School guides each student to develop his or her unique ability and potential through prayer, study, and service.

7/8 Grade Religion: Prayer, Study, Service Students in our School’s 7/8 grade religion class learn to live their faith in three simple ways: prayer, study and service. As the year progresses, these themes will take on new and increasing meanings. Each day brings new opportunities to grow in our faith. Daily prayer life at Saint Martha includes leading morning prayer for the school, learning traditional Catholic prayers such as the Memorare and the Morning Offering to the Sacred Heart, and taking time daily to remember those who are sick or in need of the healing power of our petitions to God. Leading the all-School rosaries and praying the Stations of the Cross during Lent enriches our faith life. Religious study includes our textbook curriculum, which focuses this year on the life and teachings of Jesus. Students review the basics of the faith: the liturgical calendar, feast days and holy days, the 10 Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the sacraments. Learning more about the lives of saints encourages the class to emulate the virtues and ideals they espouse. Service opportunities such as visiting residents at the Dobie Road Medical Care Facility, volunteering at the Williamston Food Bank, and assisting younger students as a Miracle Mentor give students responsibility to care for others as Jesus did. Service also includes participating in Mass as altar servers, singers, gift bearers, readers, and collecting the offering. We strive to learn by doing, for our school, faith community, and beyond.

All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance Saturday, November 2

at 11 am During the month of November, we remember in prayer our loved ones who have died, particularly this past year. We invite parishioners, along with family members and friends, to join us for a Mass of Remembrance when your loved one will be prayed for by name. One member from each family will be invited to carry a candle to the altar to burn in the loved one’s memory during the Mass, and to place a photo of him or her in the main entrance where it will remain during the month of November. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before Mass begins. If you would like your deceased loved one to be remembered at this special Mass, email their full name, date of death, and a photo (4x6, 5x7 or 8x10) to [email protected] by Tuesday, October 15. Scripture continues to remind us of the promise of the resurrection. May we be a community of faith that remembers our beloved dead, prays for them, and comforts the brokenhearted.

Do you have a musical gift, and are looking to share it with the Parish? Please consider joining our Choir! Rehearsals are Thursday

nights from 7 to 8:30 pm in the Choir Loft. Please contact Michael Garnett, Director of Music, with any questions and for more details.

October’s Morning Prayers by our Rosary Groups and Evangelization Committee will be offered for our Catechetical Programs: our teachers, aides, parents, and students in RCIA, Youth Group, and Faith Formation classes. You are invited to join these intercessions by praying the morning offering every day, to offer our prayers, works, joys, and sufferings to God. As always, we also offer prayers for our pastor Father Mike, and other priests who serve us.

Welcome the Stranger Among Us Friday, October 11

8:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Diocesan Center The immigration issue has become a critical topic in our nation … new laws, deportations, families being separated, unaccompanied children, I.C.E. raids, caravans of Hispanic fleeing to the U.S., and more. It is natural to have mixed feelings, as many enter the U.S. “illegally”. BUT Holy Mother Church teaches us to welcome our neighbor, just as Joseph and Mary experienced when they fled to Egypt to protect baby Jesus from Herod. This DOL conference will sensitize and inform attendees about the reality of immigration in our Diocese, from the perspective of the Catholic Faith, providing us with tools to bring Care and protection to immigrants. To register to learning more about welcoming immigrants and refugees, visit https://welcomethestranger.eventbee.com.
