Welcome to Sister Marie Josee, DW. I have asked Sister Marie to take over the position of Director of Outreach for the parish of St. Martin of Tours. Sister will begin her ministry here on January 16th, 2018. She will be in charge of overseeing all of the various components of the Outreach ministry: collection and distribution of food and clothing, holiday food drives, daily outreach to those from our parish who are in need, the Thrift Shop, and all other aspects of the Outreach Ministry. Sister is fluent in Spanish, French and Creole. I have asked Sister Marie to introduce herself at all of the weekend Masses on January 13/14, 2018 and I ask you to make sure that she is given a warm welcome to our great parish and community. Thank you, as ever! - Father Gordon

REGULAR SUNDAY MASSES

Monday, January 1, 2017 Solemnity of Mary,

Mother of God 8:30AM, 12 Noon

This is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation.

The Peace Light One of the most transcendent places on earth I have ever visited is Bethlehem. On the day I was in the ancient church, there was a group of Russian men chanting in that distinct and resonant Eastern tone. I can still hear it and it still stirs the soul. The church is built like a fortress. The doors are only about 4 feet high to remind all those who enter that this is the place where God came to earth at the birth of Jesus. Just as God “lowered himself” in humility by becoming man, so must each one who comes before Him “lower himself” by bowing in humility passing through the low doorway. Upon the spot where tradition tells us Jesus was born, there is a star in the floor through which you may look. Around the star are 15 silver burning oil lamps—6 belong to the Greeks, 5 to the Armenians and 4 to the Roman Catholics. The lights have been burning on that spot since the basilica was constructed by the Emperor Justinian in 565 AD. That means they have been burning for 1,450 years—without going out! Each year during Advent since 1986, a child has entered this spot in Bethlehem and has taken the light from the grotto where Jesus was born. The smokeless paraffin oil light is then placed into a blast-proof miner’s lamp and taken to Tel Aviv Airport where it is placed aboard an Austrian Airlines jet. The lamp is flown from Tel Aviv to Vienna, Austria. The light is then distributed across the entire continent of Europe along with a message of Peace. This light of Hope and Peace is carried to churches, hospitals, shelters, prisons and even private homes. The Peace Light is available to all who seek it. Austrian Airlines then flies the miner’s lamp containing the Peace Light on to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. Since Kennedy Airport is situated within the diocese of Brooklyn, the Bishop of Brooklyn is there to meet the flight at Our Lady of the Skies Chapel, located within the airport. From there the light will travel across the entire United States to light a great conflagration of Peace and Hope. In 2001 the Peace Light was brought immediately to Ground Zero. As you sit in any Catholic Church in the world, look at the candle burning right now in the sanctuary near the tabernacle. The light silently reminds us Jesus is really present in that tabernacle and in every Catholic tabernacle in the world. It is a “night light” to assure us in the dark that He is with us. It is a “lighthouse” to beckon in His direction those who are lost in darkness. The very same Jesus born in Bethlehem now resides in that tabernacle. And to make Jesus feel very much at home in the tabernacle of my church this Christmas, is a sanctuary candle lighted from one of those Peace Lights which has burned for over 14 centuries and continues now to burn across the world to welcome Jesus, Prince of Peace and Light of the World. I invite you to bring a portable candle to Christmas Mass and I will be happy to share that light with you. You too may join incalculable numbers of people across the globe and take to your home that one same light that now burns in Bethlehem and countless places around the world, all of which came from one single light: Jesus Christ who is “God from God, Light from Light.”

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS In Loving Memory

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

The Origin of the Christmas Crib The origin of the Christmas Crib (or Manger or Nativity scene -- or French crêche; Italian presepio; German krippe; Spanish nacimiento) is often attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, who in 1223 celebrated the Feast of the Nativity in a new way that led to a new devotional practice. Saint Francis sent for his friend, Giovanni Vellita, a landowner in Greccio where Francis had a favorite hermitage. "If now it seems good to thee that we should celebrate this feast together, go before me to Greccio and prepare everything as I tell thee. I desire to represent the birth of that Child in Bethlehem in such a way that with our bodily eyes we may see what He Suffered for lack of the necessities of a newborn babe and how He lay in a manger between the ox and ass.” Saint Bonaventure, Francis's biographer, said of the scene, "Many brothers and good people came at Francis's bidding, and during the night the weather also was beautiful. Many lights were kindled, songs and hymns were sung with great solemnity so that the whole wood echoed with the sound, and the man of God stood by the manger, filled with the utmost joy, and shedding tears of devotion and compassion. By his order, the manger had been so arranged that Mass was celebrated on it, and blessed Francis ... sang the gospel and preached to the people on the Nativity of Christ our King, and whenever he pronounced His name with infinite tenderness he called Him the 'little Babe of Bethlehem'". The Crêche in the Home In the 16th century the crêche scene was no longer confined to churches. It still remains common in the Catholic regions of Europe to arrange the krippe underneath the Christmas tree. Setting up the manger figures is a favorite family activity. Children like to arrange the figures of Mary and Joseph in the stable, and the shepherds, animals and other figures who are moved closer to the stable each day in anticipation of the arrival of the Christ Child. In many families, the figure of the Baby Jesus remains hidden until Christmas morning, when the children "discover" Him in the manger. It is also a custom to have the figures of the wise men begin their approach toward Bethlehem on Christmas Day after the star has appeared, to arrive at the stable on the Epiphany. The animals traditionally part of every Nativity scene -- usually an ass and an ox -- are not mentioned in the New Testament. However, as early as the 4th century these animals were represented in pictures of the Nativity. The tradition originates in two Old Testament passages foretelling the birth of Christ: Isaiah 1:3 -- "The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib, but Israel hath not understood"; and Habakkuk 3:2 -- "In the midst of two animals Thou shalt become known". The Custom of "Cribbing" It is a challenge for Catholic families to celebrate all twelve days of Christmas while all around us the season is being taken down, boxed up, or put on sale at half price. If you live in a city, one way of keeping Christmas with children is to visit Jesus in the mangers of other parishes. (The custom of Catholic families visiting the Cribs of many parishes on New Year's Day, although rapidly disappearing in the United States, is still evident in European cities.) Most churches have a beautiful display, and children will be impressed to see the care that each parish takes with its Nativity scene.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION

STEWARDSHIP Our Way of Life

Welcome home for Christmas! We warmly welcome all who come to celebrate the glorious feast of Christmas – the stranger, the traveler, the guests, our students home from college, former parishioners, old friends and our faithful parishioners – welcome all! SOME STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS: In the first reading, God promises King David that his house and his Kingdom will endure forever. It is through Mary’s “Yes” – “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.” – that the promise finds fulfillment. “In the beginning was the Word. And then the Word became flesh.” We thank You, oh God, for Your greatest gift – the gift of Your presence among us through Your Son, Jesus Christ! As grateful stewards, created in Your image, we rejoice and celebrate by sharing with others what You have shared with us. LIVING STEWARDSHIP: We are grateful this week for all stewards who have the courage, like Mary, to listen to God’s voice in their own hearts and prepare their hearts to be his dwelling place. CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS: We celebrate the gifts of time, music, and service shared with us by our ADULT AND CHILDREN’S CHOIRS. Once again, they have enhanced our Christmas liturgies. Please see Peter Schubart after Mass to join or for more information. PARISH FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP: 12/17/17 Collection: $17,585.00 12/19/16 Collection: $19,298.00 2017 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL: Parish Goal: $83,400 Pledged: $71,185 (85.4%) Collected: $56,903.75 Number of Donors: 245

Thank you for sharing your gifts of treasure.

Loving Father, may our lives bear witness to the faith we profess with our lips. Amen.

SOCIAL MINISTRY

RESPECT LIFE: Life is a gift that God has given us. That life is present in the unborn; no human hand should ever end that life. Surely the cries of the babies whose lives have been extinguished before their birth reach the ears of God. “And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the baby in her womb leapt.” The first person in the world to welcome Jesus, to recognize Him in the womb of His own mother was a child, John the Baptist. How wonderful, God chose an unborn child to recognize His son! May God Bless you this Christmas Day and always! Our committee wishes all a Blessed Christmas filled with love.
