RECONCILIATION Saturdays at 4:00PM and by appointment. 

 

BAPTISM Baptisms are celebrated on the second & fourth Sundays of each month 

at 1:30PM. Please call the Rectory to schedule a Baptism celebration and 

to arrange for an initial interview and a Baptism preparation meeting for 

parents. Baptisms will  take  place  on  the  second &  fourth  Sundays,  at 

1:30PM. 

 

MARRIAGE Marriages  are  celebrated  on  Fridays,  Saturdays,  and  Sundays  at 

prearranged times. Please call the rectory at least six months in advance 

of  an  intended date  in order  to make an appointment  to  complete  the 

preliminary arrangements,  set a date  for  the wedding, and  register  for 

the required marriage preparation program. 

 

ANOINTING OF THE SICK The Anointing of  the Sick  is available every Saturday after  the 8:30AM 

Mass  especially  for  parishioners  who  have  medical  procedures 

scheduled for the coming week. 

 

DEVOTIONS DAILY RECITATION OF THE ROSARY Monday through Saturday immediately following the 8:30 AM Mass.  

MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA Every Monday immediately following the 8:30 AM Mass.

visited us two weeks ago and spoke to us about 

her  incredibly  selfless  and  tireless work  in  the 

missions  of  Africa  for  over  sixty  years.  Sister 

wrote to me this week to express her thanks for 

being able to speak with you. She writes: ʺIt was 

a  privilege  and  a  blessing  to  be  in  the               

parish, and I am grateful for the support of the 

Society for the Propagation of the Faith.ʺ Please 

tell  Father  Joe  how  much  I  enjoyed  having                 

dinner with the priests in the rectory and please 

thank  the  people  for  their  attention  and  their 

generosity. Please keep  the  Sisters  of  the Holy 

Child Jesus in your prayers and how you are in 

mine.ʺ Thank you again for Sisterʹs visit and her 

witness  to  the  Gospel  ʺunto  the  ends  of  the 

earth.ʺ 

THANK YOU:   Thank  you  for  your  generous 

donations  to  the  ʹCatholic  Relief  Servicesʹ                  

collection  which  provides  assistance  to  every 

place  and  person  who  is  in  need  of  critical          

emergency intervention. It is the commitment of 

the  Bishops  of  the  United  States  to  assist  the 

poor and vulnerable overseas; motivated by the 

gospel  to uphold  the sacredness and dignity of 

all human life. St. Martinʹs raised $2,728 dollars 

towards the Catholic Relief Services. Thank you 

also for your donations in the amount of $2,795 

toward  the  upkeep  of  the  Holy  Land.  Our                  

collection was added to the many contributions 

from parishes throughout the world to support 

the Catholic Church in the Holy Land.

Pentecost  

Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop emeritus of Chicago stood upon the  loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica after 

having  just elected  Joseph Ratzinger  to be Pope Benedict XVI as  the 265 successor of St. Peter on April 19, 

2005. Below you will find the picture that was flashed around the world. Ancient tradition demands that all 

the Cardinals gather on  the balcony  and  await  the presentation of  the new pope  to  the world. Only  they 

know who  that  is.  In  this world of  instant  tweets, emails and  texts;  in a world where  every person has a               

cellular  device  in  his  pocket,  the  entire world waits  at  the  Sistine  Chapel  for  the most  ancient  form  of               

communication—a smoke signal. The world waits breathlessly.  

 

After the picture below was released, Cardinal George (first on right) was asked what he was thinking as he 

seemed  to be  looking  in a very different direction  from all  the other Cardinals. His  reply was  that he was 

looking out upon  the city of Rome,  the ancient center of  the mightiest empire of history. He was  thinking 

about all those emperors, kings, potentates, Caesars, despots and pharaohs who had claimed to be of divine 

origin. Where are they now? Forgotten! Lost to history! Gone! Dust! No one following them anymore! And here 

2,000 years later the entire world was riveted upon the election of the 265th Vicar of Christ on earth.   

 

Just behind  those Cardinals, around  the great Bramanti Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica are  the words: ʺTu es 

Petrus et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam et tibi dabo claves regni caelorumʺ  (ʺYou  are  ʹRockʹ  and  on 

this rock I will build my Church; to you I will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven.ʺ Mt 16:18) This was the 

promise of Jesus  to St. Peter and  the Church. No power on earth shall destroy  the rock of  the Church. The 

Church  is here until Christ’s return.   Many have  tried,  like Napoleon,  like Hitler, and others will  try  in  the 

future, but the Church is here until His return. We have His promise. 

 

On  this  Pentecost we  are  once  again  given  the  assurance  of  the  fierce  and  awesome  power  given  to  the               

Apostles  at  Pentecost,  and  to  us  at  our  Confirmation.  This weekend  our  parish  church will  be  filled  to               

overflowing with native Spanish‐speaking Catholics gathered  to praise  the Holy Spirit  in prayer and song.  

They  gather  to  celebrate  Pentecost  and  the  descent  of  the Holy  Spirit  upon  the Apostles.  The Cardinals               

pictured  here  are  the  successors  of  the Apostles,  entrusted with  the  unique ministry  of  shepherding  the               

universal Church. You have  already  received  that  same Holy Spirit  at your Confirmation  to give you  the 

courage, wisdom, fortitude, knowledge and piety to live and   proclaim the message of our salvation in Christ 

Jesus. Don’t waste those gifts. Don’t  leave them dormant. Open up these gifts of the Spirit and use them to 

change yourself and others. 

 

“Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of thy faithful. 

Send forth thy Spirit, and Thou shalt renew the face of the Earth.”

STEWARDSHIP – A Way of Life “Believing With Joy” 

 

 

 

CELEBRATION WEEKEND: The Holy Spirit dwells within you, blessing you with every good 

gift  that you need  for your own benefit and  the good of your  sisters and brothers.   Today we  

celebrate how we have all been  touched by the Spirit and  thus empowered for  the work of  the 

Kingdom of God. Take a moment to recognize your own blessings and how you may share your 

gifts as we continue our journey of stewardship renewal. 

 

SOME STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS:   One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, 

each  listener  heard God’s word  in  their  own  language.  The meaning  of  Stewardship  is  that,  by   

sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of 

our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be. 

 

LIVING STEWARDSHIP:   We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who, through 

the presence of  the Holy Spirit, practice works of mercy by  taking care of,  forgiving, and helping 

each other. 

 

CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS:  We celebrate the gifts of time, prayer, and handiwork shared 

with us by our PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY. Those gifted with the talents of knitting or crocheting 

pray  the  Rosary  as  they  create  shawls  and  lap  blankets which  are  distributed  to  the  sick.  Call

Last weekend we heard about Stewardship from 5 of our parishioners.  So  

we can all share their thoughts, all their talks will be published over the next several weeks. 

 

 

Good evening. My name is Pam Uruburu‐Bank. I’m a Mom, a widow, and a teacher... and I came to 

my  stewardship  through  a  rather  circuitous  route.  I’ve  been  a member  of  St. Martin  of  Tours             

Parish  since  I  was  seven  years  old,  when my  parents moved  our  family  to Massapequa  from 

Queens. I attended St. Martin’s School, and after graduating  in 1973 (now you all know how old I 

am  ),  I  attended  the Academy of  St.  Joseph.  I got married  in  a big  church wedding  at  this  very 

church when I was 21, right out of college, and moved out of state. 

 

Within  two years,  I had  reached a crisis point  in my  life, and  in my  faith because  I had done  the             

unthinkable ‐ I had gotten divorced. I felt very ashamed as if I had let everyone down, mostly my 

very traditional‐minded parents, and I sought guidance from the most kind‐hearted compassionate 

priests I knew ‐ the priests of St. Martin’s Parish. I remember nervously going to speak with Father 

Bob  ‐ now Bishop Robert Guglielmone  ‐  in  face‐to‐face confession  (still a rather new  format at  the 

time), and he assured me that my questioning my faith was ultimately a good thing, and that he too 

had been in a similar place at one time in his life. “And look at me!  I’m a PRIEST now!” he said with 

a chuckle, almost incredulously. His words indeed eased my troubled heart. I also sought out Father 

John Cervini, who at the time was Pastor at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, and is now a Monsi‐

gnor at San Pedro Apostol, El Cercado in the Dominican Republic. I had known him since I was a 

young student at St. Martin’s when he was a new priest here, and I guess I needed to connect with 

someone who knew the old me. I told him how much I wanted to attend mass again, to receive com‐

munion and  feel  like part of  the community, but  that  I  felt my being divorced prevented  that.  I’ll 

never forget what he asked me: “Pam, if Jesus were standing right here beside me right now, do you 

honestly  think He would  tell you  that you weren’t welcome  in His house, not welcome  to receive 

him?” My eyes filled with tears, and I shook my head no. Then Father John put his arm around me 

and said, “then you have your answer.” Mind you this was before there was any official outreach 

made  to divorced Catholics, so his words meant  the world  to me, and  they guided me back here.  

Whenever I have felt lost, St. Martin’s has always felt like home to me. 

 

It was shortly after  losing my Mom three years ago, that I decided  it was  time to give back to the 

church that had given so much to me ‐ the church that had given me hope when I had so little, and 

given my solace when my heart was filled with sorrow.

Witness Talk Continued . . . 

 

My mom, Estelle Uruburu, had always been very active in both the church and the school. She was 

President  of  the  Ladies Guild  several  times  over,  and  she worked  for many  years  at  the  Parish             

Outreach. My Dad, a retired human resources manager, devoted many years to CEPU as its career 

counselor, before his death  in 1997. My parents were such good people, and so I wanted to honor 

them as well by beginning my Stewardship. 

 

As a high school English teacher who enjoys reading to her classes, I thought that becoming a lector 

would be the best fit for my skills. However, since losing my second husband and my parents, and 

having  been  on  the  receiving  end  of  the  compassionate  care  extended  by  the  bereavement             

committee, I would like to volunteer my services there as well. I would also like to be a positive role 

model for my son as my parents were to me. 

 

A favorite writer of mine, Edith Wharton, once said, “There are two ways of spreading the light: to 

be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” I believe we all have the capability of spreading that light 

to others, especially during the darkest moments. I’m forever grateful to Father John for reminding 

me that no matter what, I’m always welcome in God’s home, and I hope through my stewardship, 

to embody that kindness and pay it forward.   

 

As Mother Teresa said: 

 

“The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.   

Give the world the best you have and it will never be enough.  Give your best anyway.   

For you see in the end, it is between you and God.  It was never between you and them anyway.”

An ancient and popular custom in the church 

is  to  memorialize  sacred  vessels  and                        

vestments  for  a  loved one.   The name of  the 

person  is  permanently  inscribed  upon  the 

vestment  or  vessel  used  at  Mass  and  the                 

person  is  remembered.    However  because 

death  is sometimes unexpected,  the  items are 

not able to be acquired in time to be displayed 

at  the  wake  and  used  in  the  Funeral Mass.  

Therefore  I  have  acquired  several  popular 

items  which  may  be  memorialized                             

immediately  and  displayed  at  the wake  and 

used  in  the  Funeral  Mass.  If  you  are                              

interested  in  memorializing  something  in 

memory  of  a  loved  one,  please  keep  this  in 

mind. Below  is a  list of some  items available.  

You  may  call  and  stop  in  to  see  them  for   

yourself any time you wish.

“CARING SPIRIT MINISTRY”  

The mission of  this ministry  is  to provide so‐

cial and spiritual support to mature members 

of our community. This will be accomplished 

through  regularly  scheduled  activities  that 

foster our relationship with God and our rela‐

tionships within the parish community. 

 

The next Spring Meeting will take place this 

TUESDAY, MAY 17th  

at 2:00PM in the Genesis Room.

PANTRY  NEEDS:  Outreachʹs  Pantry  is  very 

short on the following supplies: Shaving Cream, 

Razors, Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, De‐

odorant,  Toothpaste,  Tissue, Rice, Macaroni & 

Cheese, Tuna, and Canned Meat. Donations can 

be  brought  directly  to  the  Outreach  Office

SOCIAL MINISTRY 

 

EMPLOYMENT  MINISTRY  VOLUNTEERS 

NEEDED:    At  St. Martin’s  Employment  Pro‐

gram we maintain a database of personnel seek‐

ing  employment  in  the  local Long  Island mar‐

ket.  We  assist  them  by  providing  counseling 

services  including resume development and by 

making available a wide range of job search ca‐

pabilities. Our extensive client database covers a 

wide  range of  employment  experience  ranging 

from office work, sales help, factory work, food 

handling, home care, and companions  to assist 

the elderly. 

     If  you  can  help, we  can  use  volunteers  on 

Mondays & Wednesdays, for just four hours per 

day, to assist people in finding suitable jobs. We 

need  parishioners  who  can  interview  clients, 

prepare  resumes,  and  perform  job  searches.  If 

you wish  to help with  this  important ministry 

please  call  Frank,  Bob,  or  Rosemary  during 

regular  office  hours  or  leave  a message.  This 

ministry is staffed by volunteer case workers.

BLOOD DRIVE:   Congratulations  to all of  the 

volunteers,  the  Knights  of  Columbus  &  the 

Columbiettes for helping St. Martin of Tours So‐

cial Ministry  earn  the  2015  Silver Award  from 

Long  Island  Blood  Services  for  our  successful 

Blood Drives last year. The many awards can be 

found  in  the Outreach Office. Our  next  Blood 

Drive will  be  on Wednesday,  June  15th,  4:00‐

9:00PM in the Parish Center. See you then!
