A Large Smile of Gratitude
On October 5th, the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul of Alameda County hosted their annual
“Friends of the Poor Walk.” Parishioner,
Monique Duax, participated in the walk and
wishes to communicate the following message:
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
I was truly happy and thankful to receive your
sponsorship for my St. Vincent de Paul Walk. As
usual, you showed yourselves very generous. Thank
you kindly for giving me the privilege to walk for the
Poor. May our Saviour shower you with countless
blessings!
With Gratitude to Earl Jacobs
At the mere age of 87, long-time parishioner
Earl Jacobs is hanging up his hat as the overseer
of our Poor and Homeless Dinner food
purchasers and bread pick-up volunteers.
Earl has been a vital part of this program and a
true “Jack of all trades” since its inception in the
early 1980’s. There isn’t enough space to list all
of Earl’s volunteer contributions. He started out
making sandwiches, made countless runs to
Costco, arranged with Patty Darragh to have
Sysco deliver the bulk of the food and spent
untold hours waiting for Sysco deliveries (this
required the patience of Job). On top of that, he
maintained and replaced the kitchen appliances
as necessary, sometimes under tight deadlines.
Luckily, Earl is still involved with the Parish as
a lector and collection counter and continues to
shepherd his grandchildren to Norton Hall for
doughnuts after Mass.
Earl, for the sheer length, breadth and
dedication of your service you have attained
emeritus status! Thank you!
The work continues… we welcome Ann
Fitzgerald and Wendy McWilliams who have
kindly agreed to supervise food purchasers and
bread pick-up volunteers.

and author of the book Blood and Ink .
In November 1989, six members of the Jesuit
community of the University of Central
America in San Salvador, along with their
housekeeper and her 16-year old daughter,
were massacred by government troops. Twenty
-five years later, this book provides the
definitive account of the path that led to that
fateful day, focusing on the Jesuits’ prophetic
option for the poor, their role in the renewal of
the Salvadoran church and society, and the
critical steps that led to their martyrdom.

Faith & Spirituality
An excerpt from
“Evangelii Gaudium”
(The Joy of the Gospel)
Apostolic Exhortation of the Holy Father
FRANCIS
In virtue of their baptism, all the members of
the People of God have become missionary
disciples (Mt 28:19). All the baptized, whatever
their position in the Church or their level of
instruction in the faith, are agents of
evangelization, and it would be insufficient to
envisage a plan of evangelization to be carried
out by professionals while the rest of the
faithful would simply be passive recipients.
The new evangelization calls for personal
involvement on the part of each of the baptized.
Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to
be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed,
anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving
love does not need much time or lengthy
training to go out and proclaim that love.
Every Christian is a missionary to the extent
that he or she has encountered the love of God
in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are
“disciples” and “missionaries,” but rather that
we are always “missionary disciples.” If we are
not convinced, let us look at those first
disciples, who, immediately after encountering
the gaze of Jesus, went forth to proclaim him
joyfully: “We have found the Messiah!”
(Jn 1:41). The Samaritan woman became a
missionary immediately after speaking with
Jesus and many Samaritans come to believe in
him “because of the woman’s testimony”
(Jn 4:39). So too, Saint Paul, after his encounter
with Jesus Christ, “immediately proclaimed
Jesus” (Acts 9:20; 22:6-21). So what are we
waiting for?
