  • Nicene Creed (Continued)

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    GLORY TO GOD

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

    RESPONSORIAL PSALM

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts

    NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and Invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

    PROCESSIONAL HYMN

Glory and Praise to Our God

Refrain: Glory and praise to our God, who alone gives light to our days. Many are the blessings he bears to those who trust in his ways.

    1. We, the daughters and sons of him who built the valleys and plains, praise the wonders our God has done in ev’ry heart that sings.

    2. In his wisdom he strengthens us, like gold that’s tested in fire. Though the power of sin prevails, our God is there to save. Text: Based on Psalms 65, 66. Text and music © 1976, OCP. All rights reserved.

    COMMUNION HYMN

    Give Us, O Lord

.Refrain: Give us, O Lord, the bread of your word, give us the bread of your table. Be in our prayer, be in our labor as we seek to do your will.

    RECESSIONAL HYMN

    Lead Me, Lord

    1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, longing for their Lord, for God’s coming kingdom shall be theirs. Blessed are the sorrowing, for they shall be consoled, and the meek shall come to rule the world.

Refrain: Lead me, Lord, lead me, Lord, by the light of truth to seek and to find the narrow way. Be my way; be my truth; be my life, my Lord, and lead me, Lord, today.

    3. Blest are they who through their lifetimes sow the seeds of peace; all will call them children of the Lord. Blest are you, though persecuted in your holy life, for in heaven, great is your reward.

Text: Based on Matthew 5:3–12; 7:7, 13; John 14:6. Text and music © 1987, John D. Becker. Published by OCP. All rights reserved.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

  • SUNDAY’S READINGS FIRST READING: I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kin, and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell them all that I command him. (Dt 18)

PSALM: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. (Ps 95)

SECOND READING: An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord, so that she may be holy in both body and spirit. (1 Cor 7:34)

GOSPEL: The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. REFLECTFIRST READINGMoses taught the Israelites that God would send prophets to assist them in knowing His will. Why do you think people so often reject the prophetic message?

SECOND READINGPaul speaks of the inevitability of anxiety in life. How does your faith assist you in handling what makes you anxious?

GOSPEL READINGIn the story of the healing of a demon-possessed man, Mark reports how the demons knew Jesus’ true identity as “the Holy One of God.” What does this reveal about the unseen order?

  • It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the month of January and tomorrow we enter into the month of February. How time flies so fast. Yet we deal with the same concerns and challenges, how we can go back to the normal pace of our lives. COVID-19 has totally changed our lives even in observance of our tradition and celebration may it be in our family, in our workplace or even in our church.

Like for example with the feast of St. Blaise coming up, we normally do the blessing of throat with crossed candles over our throat while the priest invokes the prayer of blessing. Now we cannot do it anymore. Instead, the priest will just be extending his hands while maintaining a social distance to anybody who would like to be prayed over and invoke the intercession of St. Blaise on his feast day.

Another tradition or ritual practice that we do as Catholics is the imposition of ashes on our forehead on Ash Wednesday. We are accustomed to receiving ashes on our forehead that day. However, because of our on-going dealing with COVID-19, the Diocese of Greensburg following the recommendation of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has necessitated many modifications to provide us safety.

Fr. Michael Sikon explained, to reduce the risk of transmitting the coronavirus, it is not permitted this year to “sign” the faithful with ashes in the customary fashion. Rather, on Ash Wednesday the tradi-tion of being marked with ashes will take place in a different fashion, through a Sprinkling with Ashes.

Sprinkling with Ashes is a custom observed in many countries throughout the world. The minister, using their thumb and index finger, secures a pinch of ashes from the vessel containing the ashes. Without using words, the minister then sprinkles these ashes on the heads of the recipients.

Through this ancient practice we witness to our intention to undertake penitential practices during these Lenten days. We join with the whole Church throughout the world in acknowledging our need for continuing conversion. We express our hope and firm conviction that through Christ’s victory over sin and death our tears shall one day be turned to rejoicing.

I hope this helps us in preparing for the coming feast of St. Blaise and Ash Wednesday.

Celebrate the Feast of Saint Blaise

On February 3, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr. On this day,

it is customary to bless throats using blessed candles. As Father Ron explained in his

article, even though the blessing of throats with candles is not possible this year,

you can still receive a special blessing at Masses as follows:

St. Mary, Mother of God, Yatesboro St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Kittanning

Tuesday, February 2 at the 8:30 a.m. Mass Wednesday, February 3 at the 7:00 p.m. Mass

Come to either Mass and ask Saint Blaise for his intercession for good health.

Most of us are not trail blazers. Throughout history

though, there have been many folks who tirelessly

and persistently pursued the promptings of their

hearts without giving any care to what others

thought or trends dictated. Jesus is one of them.

St. Teresa of Calcutta and St. Francis of Assisi are

examples of others. The rest of us are people who

take a more measured look at things, want to test

the waters, and take our time choosing what path

or person to follow. We need credible witnesses of

faith. We need the Moses people in our lives to

show us by word and deed who God is and what

integrity and a purpose-driven life looks like.

They are the pointers to truth, who even though

they struggle themselves, seem to embody an

unspoken timeless wisdom that just sounds and

feels right. Jesus taught with this same type of

authority and caught the attention of the greatest of

skeptics. They were astonished. Even though

we need our human prophets we can also be

somewhat prophetic ourselves by putting integrity

and conviction behind our embrace of the Gospel.

Perhaps much to our surprise, we all have the

power to be a credible witness. Are you willing to

    give it a try?

Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated January 31 through

February 6. This year’s theme is “Faith. Excellence. Service.” The

week will promote the positive experiences of past and present

Catholic School students, as well as the efforts of many to continue

to facilitate the best education for students under the current

circumstances. Each of the 12 schools of the Diocese of

Greensburg will have activities throughout the week that are

traditional to that school, as well as a Mass to celebrate Catholic

    Schools Week.

It’s also an opportunity for those interested in a Diocese of Greensburg school to make

a Catholic school connection. Virtual open houses and private tours are now available.

Learn about ways we educate students safely in-person and the many options we provide for
