"O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." This woman was an outsider. She was a Canaanite, not an Israelite, and as such she would have been considered ritually unclean. But she approached Jesus nonetheless and asked for his help. And Jesus used this opportunity to teach his disciples an important lesson. In the verses directly before today's passage, Jesus had told Peter that what defiles a person comes from the heart, not from ignoring external purity practices. Then, Jesus traveled with his disciples from Galilee to the region of Tyre and Sidon where they were much more likely to encounter someone considered to be unclean. At first it appeared that Jesus wasn't going to acknowledge the woman who begged for help. His comment, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs," was a common comparison between Jews (the children) and Canaanites (the dogs). But, in fact, Jesus said this only to go right ahead and break this social code! He showed by his ac-tions that it did not matter whether someone was Jewish or not, what mattered was the faith in a person's heart. And this woman proved to Jesus and the doubting disciples that she had great faith. How many others would have even approached Jesus to ask for his help? How many others would have persevered when he appeared unresponsive? By pausing in his re-sponse, and first mentioning the standard reply, Jesus gave this woman the opportunity to demonstrate her great faith. And then, he answered her request and praised her extraordinary faith. What a lesson for his prejudiced disciples! And what a lesson for us, both to persevere in faith, and never to judge others on mere appearances.

Marian Days Marian Days is a large festival and pilgrimage for Vietnamese American Catholics. The event in honor of the Virgin Mary takes place in early Au-gust each year on the campus of the Congregation of the Mother Co-Redemptrix in Carthage, MO. The Congregation organized the first Marian Days at its US headquarters in 1978 to celebrate the Immaculate Heart of Mary. About 1,500 Vietnamese Catholics from the area participated; in 2011, attendance reached 60,000. Thousands come from across the US, as well as Canada and Vietnam. Each day is highlighted by a large outdoor Mass, and offers opportunities for reconciliation and prayer. Mass is cele-brated by many priests and religious. Although the celebrations are centered on liturgy, they also feature a number of other events. Diocesan groups set up tents to sell traditional Vietnamese food. Proceeds go to the parishes and charities. Each night, performers entertain crowds with both traditional and contemporary Viet-namese music. The celebration ends with a procession for Our Lady of Fatima. Two long firecrackers are set off, after which balloons tied to two flags (one for the Virgin Mary and the other for Vietnam) are released.
Rose of Lima Rose's baptismal name was Isabel, the daughter of Gas-par Flores and Maria de Oliva. But she was such a beau-tiful baby that she was nicknamed "Rose." It was a name that she took as her own at her confirmation. But she did not desire her beauty and considered it a distraction from her real love, Jesus. When her parents wished to marry her off, Rose refused, wanting to remain a virgin for Christ. Rose fasted regularly and prayed constantly. Her holiness became renowned. Even though she hoped to become a nun, her father would not permit it, and so Rose practiced the spiritual life as a lay member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. When Rose died at the age of thirty-one, her funeral was held at the cathedral in Lima and attended by many dignitaries. Numerous mira-cles were attributed to her. Pope Clement X canonized her in 1671, making her the first saint of the Americas.

Catholic Teaching on the Dignity of Work: The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s act of creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers, owners and others must be respected-the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to organize and choose to join a union, to economic initiative, and to owner-ship and private property. These rights must be exercised in ways that advance the common good. –USCCB Administrative Commit-tee, Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility,
