Dear Parishioners:
The idea of my leaving the parish as pastor and going to a totally new assignment is a bit unsettling. Dealing with my own sense of loss and excitement for what lies ahead, it is not always clear what I am thinking and what I am feeling. I was a bit shocked at the overwhelming sense of support from some of the parishioners. Even though I myself am not sure what type of fit this future ministry would be for me, there was much support and encouragement for what lies ahead.
I am feeling sad to leave those who have become very dear to me. It just feels sad and there is always a stronger sense of loss for those left behind - especially those I have become close to over the years. In talking to Sister Mary LaSalette today, we were both saying how this is not how we imagined ending our ministry here. But again, life does not always play out the way we imagine.
I cannot express enough gratitude to those who supported me over the years. One can never say enough about the significance of friendships in this journey we call LIFE. Even those who challenged me called for a need for me to learn how to be authentic in the very midst of doubt and criticism.
I have two more months with you. I have always been nourished by those whose faith and presence is CONSTANT. There are those who never waver in the practice of their faith. You have no idea how much that has sustained and nurtured me.
(below is my letter that was read aloud during last week’s Saturday Mass.)
Dear Parishioners,
I am writing this from Houston as I sit on a plane returning home from a five day break after Easter. I have asked Father Paul Coleman, your presider, to read this for me as I am forwarding it by email this afternoon.
About six weeks ago, Bishop Barber asked me if I would be willing to take on a new assignment. Remember, I have been thinking only about when would be appropriate to retire. He has asked me to assume the position of Vocation Director for the Diocese of Oakland, as well as the ministry of Director of our Seminarians. While this did not seem like something I could do, he was somewhat insistent that he wanted me to say “yes”. He offered his very strong support.
And, as has always worked out for me in all my years, the “yes” is always the right thing. I will assume this new ministry on the first of June. However, I will stay in the parish as pastor until June 30th when I will then move to the Cathedral and be part of the priestly community there.
I pray that I have served, with God’s grace and the support of so many of you, as best I could over the nine and a half years as your pastor. Please forgive my many shortcomings as well. I will talk more with you when I return. I will be present for the Masses tomorrow, Sunday.
I am delighted to tell you that Bishop Barber has appointed Father Paul Coleman as my replacement here at St. Monica’s. Father agreed to cover this Mass today long before I knew of my change and his as well. May you welcome him warmly. Father has often expressed to me how much he enjoys coming to celebrate the Lit-urgy with you.
I ask for your prayers at this new junction in my life. I have always tried to encourage priestly vocations and pray to continue to do so with this new ministry. One of my first things will be to oversee the Quo Vadis experience run by our seminarians and then to oversee their summer programs as well. And a great joy for me will be to be a part of Mario’s ordination to the diaconate this August 4th.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS This coming Memorial Day marks the 20th Anniversary of the dedication of
the Monument to the Unborn at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in
Lafayette. This was a joint venture of 4 Knights of Columbus Councils and 2 Assemblies. Since then,
3 additional councils have dedicated a bench alongside the monument. Over the past 15 years, there has been at least on Knight at, or near the
monument on every Saturday morning to pray the Rosary for the Unborn. Though we started with over
150 people at the dedication, we now average about 6 each Saturday.
To help celebrate this anniversary, please help us acknowledge our Orders support for the Right to Life
of the Unborn by having as many Knights, their families and friends as possible to join us for the
Rosary on Saturday, May 26th at 10:00 am. Hope to see you there.

How often do we take the time to discern what Jesus wants from us? Are our prayers always
petitions, asking Jesus to do things for us? If so, that’s a one-sided relationship. Living our faith
means developing a personal relationship with Jesus. Just like any friendship, there is give and take, each side listening to each other and helping each other out. Take time in silence to listen to what Jesus is
asking of you.
