From the Pastor’s Desk…

We are near the end of the Church’s liturgical year. Next Sunday will be the Feast of Christ the King,

followed by the first Sunday of Advent, which marks the beginning of the next liturgical year.

The readings this Sunday speak about the end times: the last judgment, the glorious second coming of

Christ and the restoration of all things in Him.

“At the end of time, the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness…The just will reign with

Christ forever, glorified in body and soul, and the material universe itself will be transformed.

God will then be ‘all in all’ (1Cor. 15:28), in eternal life.” (CCC 1060)

The first reading, taken from the last chapter of the book of the prophet Daniel, mentions Michael, the

prince of angels, who will rise up at the end of time to defeat the powers of evil. At this point, there will

be the resurrection of the dead. The just will rise to everlasting life and shine like the stars, but those

who have resisted grace will be doomed to everlasting horror and disgrace.

The “end-time” readings today are filled with imageries of struggle, darkness and distress, warnings and

tribulations. The promise of light, forgiveness of sin and eternal life, however, is given to the faithful

ones who live wisely, justly, and obedient to God’s ways.

Our world is in the midst of struggles between good and evil, struggles that at times we too may experi-

ence within our own hearts. During such times, we just need to call on Jesus, who has given us His

Spirit to strengthen us. We need to keep our eyes on Him, our Savior and King, whose victory was won

by His fidelity to God. With Jesus, we can be assured of victory over any temptation, for, in the words of

St. Paul “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13)

Thanksgiving 2018

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, which falls on November

22nd this year. It is a wonderful time to get together with family, friends and loved ones to thank

God for the countless blessings He has given us, in so many different ways and forms. And as we

celebrate, let us take time to share His gifts with others, especially those in need. That is per-

haps the best way we can show our gratitude to God! “Each of you should give what you have

decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful

giver” (2 Cor. 9:7).

God bless you and Happy Thanksgiving!

Fr. John Francis

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION Have you been trying to arrange your Thanksgiving Day schedule to include Mass with the family at 9:30am??? What would this day really mean if it doesn’t essentially mean giving THANKS TO GOD for all that we receive from Him in our daily lives. Beginning on this spiritual note will certainly make the remainder of the day a lively spirited day with family. The origin of this Thanksgiving celebration will be shown by our children dressed as pilgrims and Indians and participating in other ways in the Mass. They will dramatize the Gospel of the ten lep-ers who were healed of this terrible disease, yet ONLY ONE returned to thank GOD. The children are being asked to bring at least one food item for our Food Pantry. All parishioners are also invited to join us in this small way of thinking of those less fortunate than we. For those whose loved ones have been called Home to God during this year, Thanksgiving will have many mixed emotions as they live many memories of past celebrations. As a parish community, let us remem-ber these families in our prayer.

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING Next Sunday will be the last Sunday in this year’s liturgical or church year for Cycle B. It is the great Feast of Christ the King. From His birth, Jesus came to bring us a new kingdom with values and principles quite different from those of all of the kings found in the Old Testa-ment. We meditate on this reality when we pray the third Mystery of Light. At the end of time, Jesus our King will return to gather this transformed kingdom and presented to His Father. One of our children will be dressed as Christ the King and some children will carry banners depicting some of the values and principles of the kingdom that Jesus has established. We are all called to work at bringing this kingdom to fulfillment.

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATION As promised in last week’s bulletin, below is a pictures of our children dressed as saints. Something made me personally very happy last Sun-day. One of our Faith Formation students came up to me after the 9:15 Mass. He told me that in the homily, Deacon Thomas Jorge spoke about St. Martin of Tours. His feast is on November 11th; however, because this year it fell on Sunday, it is not liturgically celebrated but Deacon included it in his homily. The student gleefully told me that last Sunday he was dressed as St. Martin of Tours. God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director of Faith Formation

Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Directora de Formación de Fe
