From the Pastor’s Desk…

The Feast of Santo Niño (Infant Jesus)

Last Saturday, January 11th, St. Nick’s hosted a wonderful celebration of the Feast of the Santo Niño

(Infant Jesus). The first statue of the Santo Niño was brought to the Philippines in 1521. Filipinos have

a special devotion to the Santo Niño and almost all have invoked and experienced His miraculous pow-

ers. Devotees from the tri-state area came to our Church to honor the Infant Jesus at the 1:30 PM Mass.

The Sinulog, a dance in honor of the Santo Niño, was a special part of the celebration.

We are grateful to all the organizers, headed by Virginia Pepito, and all who participated in this cele-

bration. Our special thanks to Rev. Jovito Carongay, Pastor of Ascension Church, the various min-

istries, and the reception coordinators. God bless you all and we pray that the Santo Niño will con-

tinue to bless our parish with joy and unity!

Our Lady of Altagracia (High Grace)

Every year, on January 21st, the Dominicans and Dominican Americans celebrate with great pride the

feast of the Virgin de la Altagracia, Protector and Queen of their hearts and of Santo Domingo.

This year we were blessed to have with us his Excellency Obispo Emérito Antonio Camilo, to celebrate

a special Mass in honor of our Lady of Altagracia. The celebration was on Tuesday, January 14 th at

7PM. After the Mass, all the participants enjoyed more festivities and Dominican food. We want to

thank Bishop Antonio Camilo and all the organizers and the volunteers for providing this opportunity

to honor and grow in the love of our Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother.

The Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The annual week of prayer for Christian Unity will be observed from Saturday, January 18 th through

Saturday, January 25th. The theme for this year, 2020 is: “They Showed Us Unusual Kindness” (cf.

Acts 28:2). We do this in a world where separation and division hinder the quest for Christian Unity. In

2020, we are being called to show unusual kindness towards one another.

March for Life

January 22nd is the anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision, Roe Vs. Wade (1973). The Catholic

Bishops of the United States have designated January 22nd as a special day of prayer and penance for

the legal protection of unborn children. Since then, every January 22nd, our Nation’s Capital witnesses

the enormous crowd of marchers who protest against this decision. We pray that more and more people

may choose life and not death.

On Friday, January 24, 2020, the faithful from the Diocese of Brooklyn go to Washington DC for join-

ing the March for Life. A Bus is leaving from Holy Family Church, Meadow Park, at 5AM. Please

contact Cathy Donohoe at 917-929-2752.

God bless you,

Fr. John Francis

WORLD WORD OF GOD SUNDAY

Pope Francis has designated the third Sunday of Ordinary Time as World Word of God Sunday. He indicated in his letter announcing celebration that for some time he has been pondering this neces-sity and many throughout the world have been asking for such a designation focus-ing on the WORD OF GOD. We are ask-ing that all of you bring your Bible to Mass with you next Sunday, January 26th. There will be a special blessing of all Bibles along with a prayer for enthrone-ment of the Bible in some spot in your home. Today after Mass there will be Bi-bles available for a good-will offering. Be-ginning next week, we will be sharing dif-ferent ways in which all of us can grow in our reading and understanding of the Bi-ble and a greater appreciation of what the WORD OF GOD has to say to each of us TODAY!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

It is awkward to be speaking about the beginning of Lent when we are hardly completing our Christmas celebra-tions. However, time flies by and waits for no one! We are planning a parish-wide celebration of a unique “Mardi Gras” to mark the end of Ordinary Time and enter into Lent. Ash Wednesday is Feb-ruary 26th This fun event will be on Tuesday, February 25th, at 7:00pm in To-lentine Hall. There will be food, dance, games, piñata, raffles etc. We will even end with the “burying of the Alleluia!” Next week’s bulletin will carry more de-tails. Let us all try to make this a great experience of our entire parish of St. Nicholas of Tolentine. All proceeds will be going directly to our parish.

With God’s Blessings, Sr. Alice Michael S.U.S.C
