From the Pastor’s Desk…

The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity.

Last Sunday, the Church marked the end of the celebration of Easter, with the celebration of Pentecost –

Today God reveals Himself as Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. As Father, God has brought forth the

created universe, including our own being. As Son, Jesus has made known a God who hears our cries

and who loves us so passionately that He died for us. As Spirit, God remains with us and within us.

“The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mys-

tery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in Himself. It is therefore the source of all the

other mysteries of faith” Three Person in One God: Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. They are equally

wise, equally powerful and equally good and yet not distinct from each other.

The title Trinity was coined by Tertullian in the second Century. The Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.) gave

us the Creed which we recite every Sunday. The creed states:

I believe in one God the Father……..I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son……..I believe in the Holy

Spirit, the Lord the giver of Life…… The Creed sheds lights on the specific roles of the each person of

the Trinity. Father: the Creator, Son: the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit: the Sanctifier.

St. Augustine used the fact of our intellect to explain this mystery. He says, our “Intellect” has three fac-

ulties (Understanding, Memory and Will) yet one Intellect. St. Patrick used the image of the “Shamrock”

to explain about the Trinity. Karl Barth a protestant theologian sees the mystery in these words: God has

spoken to us. According to this explanation God is the Speaker, Jesus is the Word (Eternal Word) and

the Holy Spirit is an Interpreter.

For me, the strongest connection between the three persons of the Holy Trinity is seen in these verses:

-Jesus said, “No one can come to the Father except through me (Jesus)” (Jn 14:6).

-No one can say, “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. (1Cor 12:3).

-Jesus says, the Father and I are one (Jn 10:30).

-Go therefore and baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit……..

(Mt. 28:19).

I would like to conclude this reflection with the prayer we call the Doxology, Glory be to the Father, and

to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end,

Amen.

Walking with the Lord (Corpus Christi Procession)

On next Sunday, June 3rd, we celebrate the Feast of the Corpus Christi. We will honor the Body of

Christ as we process outdoors with the Blessed Sacrament. When we carry the Eucharist into our

neighborhood we are professing our faith outside the doors of our Church. We are also acknowledging

our call to bring Christ to our neighbors and to all the world. This Procession will be at the conclusion

of the 12:15 PM Mass. We encourage all to participate in the Corpus Christi Procession.

God bless you,

Fr. John Francis

The Most Holy Trinity

On the great feast of Pentecost last Sunday, joy and celebration permeated St. Nicholas of Tolentine as we celebrated the birth-day of the Catholic Church! Red was every where!!! The beauti-ful altar cloth, the flowers, banners, and many wearing something red all added to the festivity. With great enthusiasm we all sang “Happy Birthday Catholic Church” as children blew out the can-dles on the special birthday cake. All at the 10:45 Mass were able to take home a cup cake with red frosting honoring this great day! Symbolic of the unity of Jesus’ followers, many banners of the various ministry groups of our parish were carried in proces-sion. Many wore their native dress!

Every year on Pentecost Sunday the bishop allows the pastor to confirm adults who are already baptized and have received Holy Communion. Father John Francis confirmed six adult candidates: Maria Figueroa, Rogelio Fremista, Belkis Fuentes, Elba Garcia-Pine, Kengy Guzman, and Avela Murillo. Every year on Pente-cost Sunday the bishop allows the pastor to confirm adults who are already baptized and have received Holy Communion.

It was also the last class for our Faith Formation Program. Reg-istration forms were distributed at the class. These may be re-turned at any time at the Faith Formation Center. At a later date there will be more specific days and times for registration. Let us always keep in mind that there is never a vacation from being faithful to living our Christian lives. We have a great variety of times for Mass. There should be a way to enjoy the summer without leaving out what we owe to GOD.

God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director of Faith Formation
