Happy, Holy, Healthy New Year!
Today we celebrate, as we do at the beginning of every new year, the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God.
Today, perhaps with some anxiety and uncertainty, we begin what is for us another blessing
from God, a new year. For people of faith, every day, every year is a gift and a blessing from God and we return that gift to God with whatever we have put into it. Some years have been good for us and some not so good. If we have been about the business of God during the year, that year will have been a good one. If we have been wrapped up in ourselves, it will have been a poor one. We have no idea of what this new year will bring except for the certainty of its uncertainty.
This new year can become for us the best year of our lives if we view all of its events as a con-
stant blessing from God. Another way of saying that is that if we enter this new year with the openness and acceptance of Mary, if we share her positive outlook, if we allow ourselves to be filled with God’s own Spirit, this will be the best year ever.
The bible readings for the Mass on New Year’s Day, the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of
God, are simple, but they are filled with meaning. They tell us that God will continue to bless his chil-dren until the end of time. The Lord will bless and keep us. The Lord will let his face shine upon us and be gracious to us. The Lord will look upon us kindly and give us his peace. If we call on the name of the Lord, we will be filled with blessings far beyond our imagining.
During this new year, we know that we will experience many undesirable things. At times we
may even feel alone or lost or forgotten. It sounds a bit simple to say this, but remember that Jesus him-self once was lost, lost in the Temple at the age of twelve. Mary and Joseph did not rest until they found him. If we truly believe in Mary as the Mother of God and the Mother of us all as well, she will be there for us with the tenderness and gentleness of a mother’s love.
We need only to look at the story of the wedding at Cana, the first of the miracles of Jesus.
When the bride and groom ran out of wine, Mary intervened and things got better than anyone ever dreamed. The same thing can happen and will happen to us.
Look at Calvary. At the lowest, most difficult moment of Jesus’ life, when many of his closest
friends and followers and those who claimed they loved him ran away, Mary was there to give him comfort. When we experience those “Calvary moments” in our lives, Mary will be there for us as well. Her presence, her strong faith can and will help our “dyings” lead to resurrection and new life.
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, there was no room for him at the inn. We are the people
called to make room for him in our lives, in our homes, in our hearts. This year, make room for his mother as well. Mary stood at her Son’s side. She will stand at our side. We will never be alone. Stay close to Jesus. Stay close to Mary throughout this new year.

On the first Sunday of each month, St. Fabian Parish offers a blessing
for expectant mothers, fathers and their unborn children, immediately following the 9:30 a.m. Mass and we’ll meet in the Chapel. The blessing is given to strengthen mothers & fathers during the time of waiting and to pray for the health and safe delivery of their child. This blessing may be received monthly throughout the pregnancy. ~ Deacon Charlie

Important Announcement: The Adoration Chapel will be closed Monday, January 2nd due to the Holiday weekend. The parish offices are closed, thus we felt it best to close the Chapel, too. We will resume next Monday, January 9th. There is another announcement we need to make, as of Monday, January 9th, 2017 the hours for the Adoration Chapel are changing. It will be open from 12:00 noon till 6:30 p.m. with Benediction at 6:15. The Second Week of Christmas Sunday, January 1st this year, New Year's Day, is the Solemnity of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary, the Mother of God. In addition, it is a celebration of the World Day of Prayer for Peace. Monday is the Memorial of Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory Nazianzen, bish-ops and doctors of the Church. Wednesday is the Memorial of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Thursday is the Memorial of Saint John Neumann. The Epiphany of the Lord is celebrated on January 6th in most of the world. It is celebrated on Sunday, the 8th in the U.S. The light has come into the darkness of the world and our salvation was made known to the Gentiles. Matthew's Gospel brings us the story of the Magi and their encoun-ter with Herod on the way to "do homage" to the newborn King of the Jews. The first reading during the week contin-ues from the First Letter of John, encourag-ing us to make our home in the one who makes his home in us. In Jesus, we have eternal life and we are called to love one another. The Gospels for this week show Jesus manifesting himself in his life on earth, following John's Gospel, from the testimony of John to the calling of Jesus' disciples from their everyday lives. Sunday is the celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord in the U.S. It is the Baptism of the Lord in the rest of the world.
Daily Prayer This Week: This second week of the Christmas Season can be a great help for our daily connections with our Lord. We have the full and wonderful Solemnity in honor of Mary, in her role as "Mother of God." We can ask her to be our guide all week as we desire to grow closer to her Son. We can read Pope Francis' words for the World Day of Prayer for Peace and ponder them from time to time this week. As we go through our daily, and often very busy lives in these days after Christmas, we can continue a sense of this brief season by continuing to ask that our Lord come to us in the ways we still need light and healing and peace. For some of us, this will be an easy prayer this week Waiting faithfully can continue into the Christmas Season. A special grace to ask for this week would be the gift of celebrating our Lord's presence with us. We can ask for it every morning, as we get going and we can enter into brief conversations with our Lord, in the background, as we encounter some of the places in our life in which we can see more hope, more of an opportunity for peace. This week, we might hold up each member of our family, close friends and neighbors, and those we might work with, seeing and celebrating how our Lord is mani-fest in them. For some of us, there may be real epiphany moments, when we see what we haven't been seeing, feel what we haven't been feeling or experience a call we haven't felt before. Being watchful for and open to these special post-Christmas moments of grace is very important. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, these days are short and darkness comes early. Perhaps we can light a candle every evening this week at dinner just to celebrate the Light of Jesus that comes into the darkness of our lives. In the Southern Hemisphere, there is so much light, we can rejoice with it.

The Solemnity of Mary, The Mother of God
On New Year’s Day, the octave day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God, the divine virginal motherhood of the Blessed Virgin. It is the highest title of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast is the celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus and is the oldest feast of Mary celebrated by the Catholic Church. Mary has an important role to play in the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. She consents to God’s invitation conveyed by the angel (Luke 1:26-38) Elizabeth proclaims: “Most blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.”
Heavenly Father,
You blessed the Virgin Mary with the fullness of grace.
She is my model of faith, hope, and love.
I give this new year to her intercession and ask for her holy
prayers. Place my needs into the protection
of her motherly love. With her help, I want my faith to
grow. Give me an increase in the virtue of hope when troubles tempt me to
despair. Guide me in understanding Your
infinite love. And join my heart, dear Lord, to the Holy Mother’s Immaculate Heart, so that I may improve in
loving everyone unconditionally, in imitation of my Savior, Jesus.

Help us at all times to live that our life and conduct may make it plain that we belong to you.
Give us the strength to bear lightly our joys and sorrows. Give us the strength to make our love fruitful in service. Give us the strength never to disown the poor or bend our knees before insolent might. Give us the strength to raise our minds high above daily trifles. And give us the strength to surrender our strength to your will with love. Amen

If you are interested in learning about the Muslim religion while exploring aspects of our own Catholic faith, our dialogue group might be for you. The Catholic / Muslim Women's Dialogue Group meets once a month to discuss topics relevant to each faith. We also try to partici-pate in at least 2 outreach projects each year. kept on the list or are terminal. All of these names are placed in the Intention Basket which is carried up at the Offertory and are prayed for at all the Masses.
