~FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK~ The “vigil” in Milwaukee It’s 2:30 in the morning. A police officer sees a light in the window of a Milwaukee church hall. He knocks on the door and a pa-

rishioner answers.

“Everything OK?”

“Yes, officer we’re just having our usual prayer vigil.”

That’s not exactly true.

The small church wanted to provide a warm, safe place for homeless people to stay on Milwaukee’s cold winter nights, but

there was no way the parish could afford to meet city code. So they decided to hold an “all-night prayer vigil” to which all were

welcome. The vigil is now greatly appreciated by local police and neighbors as well as the homeless who take advantage of the

“warm” vigil.

The genius of the ministry is that the guests have taken on the major role in managing the program. Parish “prayer leaders”

have witnessed the amazing transformation of seemingly helpless people into competent managers of their own situation. They turn

away people who are intoxicated or otherwise unable to cooperate. They determine the timing of smoking breaks. They keep the

church clean. They “have each other’s backs” as a community.

One volunteer believes, “I think this is what Jesus had in mind when he called together the most unlikely people to be his dis-

ciples and support community– in other words, church.”

Maybe “prayer vigil” isn’t such a stretch, after all.

The Ascension of the Lord is not the marking of a departure but the realization of a presence. Matthew’s Gospel begins with

the dawning of Emmanuel: “God is with us”; it concludes with Emmanuel’s promise: “I am with you always, even to the end of

time.” It is not an abstract or distant presence; Christ is the center of our Church in word, in sacrament, in every moment of gener-

osity and every act of compassion we perform and experience. Christ is in our midst in everything we do in His name: our Sunday

Eucharist, a group of children learning the Lord’s Prayer, a gathering of knitters each week to make prayer shawls for the sick, a

legally-sanctioned “prayer vigil” for the homeless on a frigid winter night. The charge Jesus leaves to his disciples on the moun-

tain of the Ascension is left to all of us two millennia later: we are called to teach, to witness and to heal in our own small corners

of the world, from our kitchen tables to our church hall.

Dear Friends,

Christ is Risen!

Today, as we celebrate Mass, we remember the Ascension of the Lord. Jesus takes His place at the Father’s right

hand. He reminds us that He is with us, even to the end of time. As we gather as church this weekend, let us pray that as

we minister and work in His name, that we bring His healing love, mercy and forgiveness to all the lives we touch.

Today is also Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a holiday in the United States for remembering the people who

died while serving in our country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Mon-

day of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Repub-

lic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the

graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions,

celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died

while in the military service. It marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its

end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many

volunteers place an American flag on each grace of our fallen heroes.

As we approach summer, I would like to share with you some of the projects we are working on. First, the flat sec-

tion of the roof of the church including both sacristies, elevator and portico have been restored, fixing and eliminating

all leaks. We will let you know the exact figures when all bills and rebates are in. Second, the old school playground

has been removed to improve our parking lot situation near the elevator. Third, the landscaping brick has been elimi-

nated and proper steps will be built for parishioners to step up onto the portico. The cracked sidewalk on East Water

Street will also be repaired.

We are still taking bids on the church level restrooms. We don’t want to rush through the process without thinking

of all that needs to be done. As you see things are getting fixed up around our parish campus. With your generosity and

help, these projects and more will happen. Thank you!

Let us pray for God’s blessing upon us all this week,

Fr. Mike

Prayer is the foundation of our Faith and the foundation of Steward-

ship. Pray in good times and in bad. Prayer is always the first best

option in any situation, not just the last resort. Pray for friends and

family and for those that don’t treat you very well. Pray to give

praise, to thank and to ask God for help. Pray to see what God wants

you to do with the gifts He has given you.

Please remember to keep in your prayers

ST. PATRICK ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH HUBBARD, OHIO

St. Patrick Youth Scholarships Recipients Parishioners of St. Patrick's,

I would like to thank you, not only for awarding me with

a scholarship to support me as I take this next step into college,

but also for supporting me throughout my youth and helping

me to get to where I am today. Along with being graduated

from Hubbard High School this year, I have also been awarded

both the Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America as well as

the Eagle of the Cross by the Diocese of Youngstown. Without

this church community and all of the wonderful people here

who have taught me some very important lessons, I would not

have been deserving of these awards. I believe that Jesus has a

plan for me, and the people of St. Pat’s have helped to keep me

walking along that path. I will be attending Youngstown State

University in the fall with a major in Mechanical Engineering.

It has been an honor serving this parish for these years, and

because I’ll be staying pretty close to home for college, I’ll still

be able to spend the coming years here too. Thank you all so

very much.

Your Brother in Christ,

Jonathan Feigert

Dear St. Patrick Parish Family,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for select-

ing me to receive one of the St. Patrick Youth Scholarships. I am

humbled to have been chosen and will use the award as I pursue a

business degree at Youngstown State University.

I would also like to express my appreciation to my parish

family for all that you have done to help me form my strong faith.

I am thankful that I have had the opportunity to serve as an altar

server, Eucharistic Minister, CCD aide and Celebrate team mem-

ber.

Thank you again for your love and generosity.

Sincerely,

Georganna Norris

Dear St. Patrick Family,

Thank you very much for choosing me as one of the re-

cipients of the St. Patrick Youth Scholarship. I am honored to

have received this incredible gift. This scholarship will assist in

providing my education at The Ohio State University where I

will be majoring in biology with a minor in Spanish. St. Patrick

Parish has impacted my life in many ways. I will continue to

extend my faith to others and I will always be active in my

parish. Thank you again for this incredible scholarship. I am

truly grateful for everything St. Patrick Parish has done for me.

Sincerely,

Sophia Madeline

Dear St. Patrick’s Parishioners,

Thank you for honoring me as one of the recipients of the

St. Patrick Youth Scholarship this year. It will certainly help me

as I move on to the next chapter of my life at Youngstown State

University in the fall.

I would also like to thank you all for assisting me on my

faith journey from my baptism to my graduation. The parish fam-

ily environment and all the support I’ve received throughout the

years has helped make me who I am today. Although I am gradu-

ating, I will still be around to proudly serve St. Patrick Church.

May God bless all of you!

Sincerely,

Ryan Love

Volunteers Needed Fr. Tim O’Neill will be celebrating his 50th Anni-

versary of the priesthood this year. We will be honoring

him, his priesthood and ministry here at St. Patrick’s

with Holy Mass and a reception

on June 25, 2017. If anyone

would like to help with the re-

ception for Fr. Tim following

the 11:00 a.m. Mass, please

contact the Parish House at 330-

534-1928.

Dear St. Patrick Parish,

I would like to thank those of St. Patrick's Parish for

awarding me the $1,000 scholarship. This money will be going

towards my education for physical therapy at Penn State She-

nango in the fall. I have been so incredibly blessed with grow-

ing up in such an amazing church community. I would also like

to thank everyone for their never ending love and support.

All my love,

Alaina Colella

That seated at the right hand of His Father in

heaven, the Lord will generously share His spirit of

wisdom with all those now discerning their vocation

and open the eyes of their hearts in faithfulness, we

pray to the Lord.
