FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOD’S WORDS
Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morning, un l the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “good‐night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words li our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hur ul. Today the Church focuses our a en on on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is
to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and a tudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A Column by Fr. Tom
Looking Through Stained Glass
The Sunday Obligation Last week, we introduced our new series on the Precepts of the Church. We learned that a precept is “a rule or instruction, which is intended to elicit a certain action” and that the Precepts of the Church are “the actions that all Catholics should take.” [Looking Through Stained Glass, “The Precepts of the Church”, July 5, 2020] The first Precept that we will explore is the one that is probably most well-known, “the Sunday Obligation.” In the Catechism we read, “You shall attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.” [CCC 2042]
Why should we attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation? This question can be answered in a number of ways. Some people need requirements in order to do what is right. For example, some people need a speed limit in order to drive at a safe speed. Some religious persons need the Ten Commandments in order to do what is right. For those who need a positive law to obey, the Church provides her Code of Canon Law [CIC]. In the Code of Canon Law, it states, “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass.” [CIC 1247] At the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, even before the churches were closed for public Mass, Bishop Barbarito issued a dispensation, which still exists at this time, to allow those who were unable or uncomfortable gathering for Mass, to be dispensed (or excused) from this obligation.
However, there are other reasons to attend Mass, at least on Sundays and holy days of obligation. The Catechism states that the reason we gather as a community for Mass on Sundays is to commemorate the Resurrection of the Lord. [CCC 2042] Some theologians have said that each Sunday is “a little Easter.” We also gather on Sunday because Jesus gives us a gift, the gift of Himself in the Eucharist at each Mass. We also gather for Mass because we are called to community. Just as the Trinity itself is communal, our spirituality and our faith are communal.
In addition to our celebration of the Eucharist on Sundays, we are called to those activities (and inactivity) that contribute to our communion with the Lord on Sundays. The Code of Canon Law states this part of the obligation as, “[the faithful] are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body.” [CIC 1247] It is for this reason that some families gather in a special way on Sundays (e.g. Sunday dinner), that some families have restrictions on certain activities like no television on Sundays, and that some people will refuse to work or shop on Sundays. [cf. Dies Domini (On Keeping the Lord’s Day Holy), Pope St. John Paul II, May 31, 1998 for more information on why and how to keep Sunday as a holy day]
Finally, we should discuss the Holy Days of Obligation (besides Sunday). The original list of Holy Days of Obligation includes the following: “the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ (Christmas), the Epiphany, the Ascension, the Body and Blood of Christ, Holy Mary the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her Assumption, Saint Joseph, Saint Peter and Saint Paul the Apostles, and All Saints.” [CIC 1246] However, the same Law also allows that “the conference of bishops can suppress some of the holy days of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.” [Ibid.] In the United States, the following days are Holy Days of Obligation: Christmas (Dec. 25), Holy Mary the Mother of God (Jan. 1), the Assumption (Aug. 15), All Saints (Nov. 1) and the Immaculate Conception (Dec. 8). The Epiphany, the Ascension and the Body and Blood of Christ (in most dioceses) have all been transferred to Sunday. The solemnities for St. Joseph and for Sts. Peter and Paul have been suppressed.
Next week, we will discuss the obligation to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once per year.

July 2020
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Natural Family Planning Awareness week is the annual na onal educa onal campaign sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to promote Natural Family Planning (NFP). This year, NFP Awareness week be celebrated from July 19 through July 25 under the theme: Live the truth and beauty of God’s plan for married love! The campaign offers us a wonderful opportunity to share the good news about God’s perfect design for marriage and responsible paren ng.
In sacramental marriage we are called to live with Christ‐like love; to freely give of ourselves as a gi to our beloved. Married love is fundamentally a call to frui ulness and, in response to this call, the Church proposes Natural Family Planning. Today’s NFP provides a modern, scien fic method available to couples for planning their families by enabling them to par cipate in God’s crea ve ac on without breaking the inseparable link between the uni ve and procrea ve meanings of the conjugal (marital) act. As NFP becomes a way of life, husbands and wives cooperate with each other and with God in responsibly planning their family and avoid the devasta ng spiritual and physical harm caused by ar ficial contracep ve methods.
During Natural Family Planning Awareness week, we also celebrate the 52nd anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae. Issued in 1968 by Pope Paul VI, this encyclical prophe cally ar culates the grave consequences of the use of ar ficial and illicit means of birth control, including a general lowering of morality, increased infidelity, and devaluing of women (HV, no. 17). Unfortunately, today’s headlines confirm the devasta ng accuracy of his predic ons and demonstrate the destruc ve consequences for our families. In contrast, couples who prac ce NFP enjoy greater marital stability and suffer divorce at only a frac on of the rate of divorce among first me marriages overall. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those married couples who live out their marriage commitment to free, total, faithful and frui ul love. I encourage all married couples and those preparing for marriage to reflect on their current or future marriages and how they can authen cally and responsibly fulfill their commitment to frui ul love. If you have not yet considered NFP or have ques ons, I invite you to inves gate and discover the richness of NFP. Please visit our website at www.diocesepb.org/naturalfamilyplanning for resources and addi onal informa on or call 561‐775‐9539.
With every prayerful wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of Palm Beach

Diocesan Prayer for God’s Protection in the face of the Coronavirus Pandemic
Loving and gracious God, as in all times, we turn to You and implore Your protection and healing as we
face a new threat to our health and peaceful well-being in the coronavirus pandemic before us.
Help us to be united with each other and with all of our brothers and sisters around the world affected by this illness. We pray for all those in the medical field who are assisting patients and in the field of science who are discerning a cure, as well as for all
government leaders. Remember those who, through this virus, have passed from this life as well as their
families in their loss. At this time of fragile uncertainty, we also humbly implore You to grant us prudence, hope, courage
and patience. Dispel from us fear, panic and distrust which disrupt us in spirit to the detriment of our
well-being. We make our prayer in the name of your beloved
Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who always cured those who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. Our Lady, Patroness of our Diocese,
Queen of the Apostles and Comforter of the Afflicted, pray for us, Amen.

completely. Please do not let me ever be separated from you. Amen.
