TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES

With any luck, summer delights will con nue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recrea on (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxa on on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, meal mes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious educa on and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a li le like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “ mid delibera ons” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges long me friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds”

traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“It was humbling to be in possession of and display the voca ons Chalice during our week of prayer. The sense of community with other Saint Paul of the Cross parishioners who have already prayed with the Chalice and with those who will do so...was always there.”

A Column by Fr. Tom

Looking Through Stained Glass

How Great is our God!

Last week, we discussed how the Creed follows a Trinitarian format because it first explains our beliefs about the Father, then the Son, followed by the Holy Spirit. We spent a good portion of our last column discussing our monotheistic belief in one God.

Moving forward, we see that the remainder of the first paragraph of the Nicene Creed states, “[I believe in one God,] the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.” This statement expresses two beliefs that we have about God the Father. First, it expresses that God is all-mighty or all-powerful. Second, it expresses that we believe that God is the Creator of all things – in heaven and on earth.

Our discussion last week about there only being one God logically leads us to the belief that the same God is also all-powerful. Even when the early Hebrew Scriptures allowed for the existence of other gods, they always expressed the relative power of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Near the end of his life, Moses praises the God of his fathers in these words, “Lord GOD, you have begun to show to your servant [Moses] your greatness and your mighty hand. What god in heaven or on earth can perform deeds and powerful acts like yours?” [DT 3:24] David praises God with similar words, when he expresses in one Psalm, “Your way, God, is holy; what god is as great as our God?” [PS 77:14]

In the Catechism, the term “Father almighty” is taken together and explained this way, “God is the Father Almighty, whose fatherhood and power shed light on one another: God reveals

his fatherly omnipotence by the way he takes care of our needs; by the filial adoption that he gives us [i.e. We are His sons and daughters through Christ. (cf. Eph. 1:5 & Rom. 8:15)]; finally by his infinite mercy, for he displays his power at its height by freely forgiving sins.” [CCC, 270]

Although many acts of God show his great power, one such act is the act of creation, the very first action that is recorded in Scripture. “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth…” [GN 1:1, cf. GN 1:1-2:3] The Catechism goes on to explain how God’s power of creation and His power over creation are related. “If God is almighty ‘in heaven and on earth,’ it is because He made them. Nothing is impossible with God, who disposes His works according to His will. He is the Lord of the universe, whose order He established and which remains wholly subject to Him and at His disposal.” [CCC, 269] As expressed in the quote from Genesis above, God not only made earth, but He made Heaven as well. In the Creed, we say that He created “heaven and earth” and we also say that He created both what we can see here on earth (visible) and what remains to be seen in Heaven (invisible) [cf. Col 1:15-16].

Having explored some of what we believe about God the Father, as it is expressed in the Creed, we will move forward to begin our exploration of what we believe about Jesus Christ, the Son of God next week.

A hope that is expressed in expectations for the future, in the desire for friendship, in the wish to participate in the host society also through learning the language, access to employment and the education of children.”– Pope Francis, Address to Participants in the Plenary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, May 24, 2013
