This week PassionPalm Sunday Mark 111-10 Isaiah 504-7 Philippians 26-11 Mark 141-1547

Background ldquo To seerdquo in the Gospel of John is a loaded verb It means not merely to

look with onersquos eyes but to see with the eyes of faith to believe Thus when Greeks that is non-Jews ask ldquoto seerdquo Jesus they want to believe in him This is taken by Jesus as the signal his ldquohour has comerdquo This hour is the time for his exaltation and glorification by the Father even

though it entails his crucifixion and death Only by dying and giving his life does he bring life to the world the same way a grain of wheat must die in the ground before it can produce an

abundant harvest of grain for people to eat and live

Next Week Easter SundaymdashMorning Mass Acts of the Apostles 1034a 37-43 Colossians 31-4 or 1 Corinthians 56b-8

John 201-9

Adult bible study gathers on Tuesday evenings in the office Conference Room at 630 pm

ldquoWhen comparing the accounts of the four gospels what stands out even more clearly [than their similarities] are the differences Too often we hasten to try to reconcile the differences rather than seek to understand what those differences mean Each writer provides us with a profoundly distinctive contribution to our understanding of Jesus and his saving acts Writing in a different cultural context with a new set of circumstances for the Christian community each evangelist presented the early traditions in new ways Presenting a detailed biography was not the dominant concern of each author rather they all interpreted the meaning of Jesusrsquo word and deeds as they listened to the apostolic preaching and followed the guidance of the Holy Spirit The living Word took on new shape according to the needs and circumstances of each community and each generation of Christians ldquoIn writing their accounts the evangelists drew on the words of the prophets the prayers of the psalms and other texts to help the church see Godrsquos presence in the paschal events mdashmdash Stephen J Binz

Most Catholics do not participate in the culmination of Lent the liturgical celebrations of the ldquoThree Days of Easterrdquo - that is the liturgies of Holy Thursday Good Friday and the Easter Vigil Itrsquos just lsquonot the Easter traditionrsquo of many For others thatrsquos lsquojust too much churchrsquo For still others theyrsquore lsquotoo long and boringrsquo A lady once asked me ldquoTheyrsquore not holy days of obligation are theyrdquo No theyrsquore not if the only way to get people there is the threat of obligation then maybe itrsquos best they stay home The church has probably never had the majority of its folks at the high holy days celebrations The majesty of the mystery of Christrsquos death and resurrection is not something to easily grasp without a significant commitment of mind and heart of time and energy Also there

are those who simply cannot make this commitment even if they would like to because of the responsibilities of work or children or the stresses of age and ill health Still how painful the celebration of Lordrsquos Supper when a scant 120 Christians gathered to remember or on Good Friday a similar number venerate the cross on which the Lord Jesus died Despite efforts to make the Easter Vigil shorter than a March Madness ball game so few give it a chance Oh well Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again Fr Larry
