appreciate an authentic sense of penance. Bishop Murry, recognizing that St. Patrick’s Day is Friday, gives permission to those celebrating on that day to eat meat – provided that they abstain from meat on another day that week. The choice is yours. (But don’t choose Saturday, if you belong to St. Patrick Parish, because that’s the day of the dinner.) At St. Paul Parish we plan to have a Sunday morning program for adults after the 8:00 am Mass on Matthew Kelly’s book, Resisting Happiness. Mass on Wednesday evenings with some focus on healing presented after Mass. Spanish speaking parishioners will participate in V Encuentro (Quinto Encuentro). Those who attended 11:15 am Mass at St. Paul Parish last Sunday know about our unexpected visitor – a bat. (Some of you remember Christmas Eve at St. Patrick’s a few years ago!) There was a mixture of fear and amusement that went in waves throughout the congregation. Some parishioners put a jacket over the bat and took him outside. Now, we can only hope and pray that he doesn’t come back…! May God bless each of you. Make it a great week and a great Lent. With love and prayers,

Dear Friends, “But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by that one person’s transgression, the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one person Jesus Christ overflow for the many.” Romans 5:15 The reality of sin is presented to us on this First Sunday of Lent. But the harshness of that reality is softened by the greater reality of God’s gift. The doctrine of Original Sin is confronted with the overflowing gift of God’s mercy: acquittal, justification and righteousness. During Lent, in whatever forms our works of almsgiving, prayer and fasting may take, let us always remember that our goal is a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a deeper faith in him. Along with this we deepen our relationship with Church – with the People of God who are our companions during Lent. Our Lenten Journey is meant to lead us to the Promised Land of Easter Joy and a greater appreciation of Jesus Risen from the dead. Remember that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation are led to

WHY LENT?

Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebration of Easter. By observing the 40 days of lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities.

Why 40 days? 40 is a significant number in Jewish-Christian Scripture: In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain. The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God. Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the Commandments on Mount Sinai. Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry. Did you know? Lent is an old-English word meaning “lengthen.” It’s observed in the spring when the days are getting longer.

2017 Annual Bishop’s Appeal for Catholic Charities and Church

Last weekend, our parish joined with parishes throughout the Diocese of Youngstown in making a commitment to the 2017 Bishop’s Appeal for Catho-lic Charities and Church. This year’s goal is $4 mil-lion. The Appeal is the primary funding source for Catholic Charities in our six-county diocese. There continues to be an ever-increasing number of needy persons coming to Catholic Charities for help and they depend on our support of the Bishop’s Appeal. The Bishop’s Appeal also helps to subsidize tradi-tional Church ministries. Bishop Murry is counting on our support of the 2017 Bishop’s Appeal. It is his fervent hope that every parish will reach their goal. This weekend, we ask that you prayerfully make a gift to the Annual Appeal, using the envelope in your pew or the response card mailed to your home. Thank you in advance for your reflection and gener-ous response to the Bishop’s Appeal.

LENT 2017 FASTING

On Ash Wednesday we heard Jesus speak of the disciplines of Lenten faith: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. In the Gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert and into a time of fasting. Jesus does not give up something for these forty days, as we fre-quently do during this season. What is to be gained from giving up something for forty days? Is it soda or televi-sion, sweets or cigarettes, meat or shopping for non-essentials? The practice of giving up something that has some measure of control over us leads to a temporary mastery over an object or habit. It can also be an offering to God for God’s gifts to us. Jesus, led into the desert, encounters solitude and fasting, prayer and silence. He experiences a deep communion with the Father. This is not a mere mastery of a habit or a break from temptations. This is an life-altering event. Jesus is given the strength to counter the devil and to hold fast to the reign of God. Je-sus sends the devil away, empty and unsuccessful. What if you spent forty days in deeper communion with God? What would you really have to leave behind in order to enter a desert-like experience? In your parish, what are some ways this season of Lent is observed as a desert-dwelling time?
