Once committed to conversion, the heart learns to pray in faith.

From the Sermon on the Mount onwards, Jesus insists on conversion of heart: reconciliation with one's brother before present-ing an offering on the altar, love of enemies, and prayer for persecutors, prayer to the Father in secret, not heaping up empty phrases, prayerful forgiveness from the depths of the heart, purity of heart, and seeking the Kingdom before all else.

On the day of Pentecost, the Spirit of the Promise was poured out on the disciples, gathered "together in one place." While awaiting the Spirit, "all these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer."

In the first community of Jerusalem, believers "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and the prayers." This sequence is characteristic of the Church's prayer: founded on the apostolic faith; authenticated by charity; nourished in the Eucharist.

Some types of prayer mentioned in the Catholic Catechism include:

I. Blessing and Adoration

II. Prayer of Petition III. Prayer of Intercession IV. Prayer of Thanksgiving V. Prayer of Praise Indeed, in the Christian life there are several wellsprings where Christ awaits us to enable us to drink of the Holy Spirit. The Word of God, the Liturgy of the Church, and the virtues of faith, hope, and charity are sources of prayer.

Prayer is primarily addressed to the Father; it can also be directed toward Jesus, particularly by the invocation of his holy name: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us sinners."

"No one can say 'Jesus is Lord', except by the Holy Spirit" (1 Cor 12:3). The Church invites us to invoke the Holy Spirit as the interior Teacher of Christian prayer.

Because of Mary's singular cooperation with the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church loves to pray in communion with the Virgin Mary, to magnify with her the great things the Lord has done for her, and to entrust supplications and praises to her.

Clearly, in Discipleship, in Worship, in Prayer, and in the whole of Christian life nothing, NOTHING which is truly Christian prayer is done outside of sharing in the life of the community of faith. Prayer is an act connected to the community even if we are praying all alone. Fr. Fitzpatrick

Prayer of intercession consists in asking on behalf of another. It knows no boundaries and extends to one's enemies.

Every joy and suffering, every event and need, can become the matter for thanksgiving which, sharing in that of Christ, should fill one's whole life: "Give thanks in all circumstances" (1 Thess 5:18).

Prayer of praise is entirely disinterested and rises to God, lauds him, and gives him glory for his own sake, quite beyond what he has done, but simply because HE IS.

First Reading Numbers 11: 25 - 29 The LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Taking some of the spirit that was on Moses, the LORD bestowed it on the seventy elders; and as the spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied.

Now two men, one named Eldad and the other Medad, were not in the gathering but had been left in the camp. They too had been on the list, but had not gone out to the tent; yet the spirit came to rest on them also, and they prophesied in the camp. So, when a young man quickly told Moses, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp," Joshua, son of Nun, who from his youth had been Moses' aide, said, "Moses, my lord, stop them." But Moses answered him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets! Would that the LORD might bestow his spirit on them all!" “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. The St. Peter Knights of Columbus invites all girls and boys ages 9-14 to participate in our annual Penalty Kick Contest on Saturday, October 20, 2018, at the West Brandywine YMCA across from Brandywine Hospital. All participants need to be at the field at 2:15 p.m. to register for the event. Par-

ents or guardians need to sign off on the registration form. Immediately after everyone is registered the competition will begin. Each participant will take 20 penalty kicks and the one who makes the most goals will be the winner in their age group. Mass of Remembrance for Deceased Loved Ones November 3: On Saturday, November 3, the 5 p.m. Mass will be a special Mass of Remembrance for deceased parishioners who have died in the past year and their family members. The Serenity/AA Group meets every Thurs-day at 8 p.m. in Meeting Rooms C & D. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I

cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Know someone strug-gling with illness, experiencing the loss of someone close, or having serious family is-sues? Our ministry would love to give them a

handmade shawl or lap blanket made in prayer as a sign of our community's care and concern, and more im-portantly of God's love and desire to be with them. There is no charge. We continue praying for all our recipients at our meetings. If you would like to join us in this ministry, our meetings are every other Monday afternoon, and until October 4, every other Thursday evening. Beginning in October, the Thursday evening group will meet the first Thursday of every month. brated the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are on the front line in laboring for the poor; they are among the first to know their real needs. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to hear the cries of the poor by assist-ing families, providing food, utility, rent, and other bills. God Bless You!
