The Church in La n America

La n America is home to the largest number of Catholics in the world; yet the Church struggles to bring the Word and grace of God to her people. In some countries there is only one priest for every 40,000 Catholics. Due to poverty, many men and women called to religious life cannot afford to leave their families or pay for their educa on. Poverty also prevents many communi es from having their own priest, deacon or religious sister to instruct them in the faith or to bring them the grace of the sacraments. They depend on the generosity of others to help keep the light of faith shining in their communi es. There will be a na onal second collec on this weekend to help the Church in La n America. Thank you for your generosity.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the eighth century before Christ, when Israel is defeated by the aggression of the rising Assyrian empire, Isaiah writes of God’s interven on in the history of his people. He prophesies of the coming of the Prince of Peace who will free his people from oppression. The Lord has brought them abundant joy for the yoke that burdened them has been smashed. St. Paul urges the Corinthians to end their divisions so that they might be united in the same mind and the same purpose. He reminds them that their loyalty must be to Christ himself, not individual charisma c leaders, since there should be unity in the body of Christ. The gospel relates the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. When John the Bap st is arrested, Jesus leaves Nazareth and goes to Capernaum where he begins to preach, exhor ng the people to repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. He calls his first disciples, Peter, James and John, telling them to leave their fishing nets and he will make them fishers of men. They travel throughout Galilee proclaiming the gospel and curing every disease and illness.

From the Pastor’s Desk

The scriptures tell us to rejoice, for God is here to take care of his people. The theme of the scripture readings is not only that God acted in the historic past to bring salva on to his people, but that God con nues to act in hu-man history today. This truly is cause for rejoicing.

The prophet Isaiah tells the people that God has brought them abundant joy and great rejoicing for the yoke that has burdened them has been li ed. The scriptures use repe on to drive home a point, telling us that we can be-lieve the word that God is speaking to us. It is a very poe c reading, designed to upli the spirits of those who feel down- trodden or troubled: “Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness… The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, upon those who dwelt in a land of gloom a light has shone.” We heard the last half of this reading at the Christmas Mass at Midnight. Jesus is the cause of great rejoicing because he has come to set his people free. We take the joy of Christmas forward into the dreary winter of our lives and we find the light of Christ shining in the midst of our darkness.

Our gospel begins the public ministry of Christ. Having celebrated his bap sm in the Jordan, Jesus withdrew to un-dergo the tempta ons in the desert. Having successfully resisted the devil’s offers of worldly power, wealth and honor, Jesus is now ready to proclaim the good news of God’s grace to the people. When he hears that John the Bap st has been arrested, he knows that it is me for him to take center stage. St. Ma hew references our first reading, quo ng the prophet Isaiah, to tell his audience that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy. The true light has arisen in the land.

Jesus’ message is simple but quite astounding: “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.” John’s bap sm was for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus wants to re-make us in his own image. Repent means to “re-think”. Jesus invites us to change our world view, to let go of our old way of being so that we can live in a new way, in harmony with the will of God. Instead of merely seeking forgiveness for our sins, Jesus invites us to a life where we freely choose not to sin but to live in the freedom of God’s grace.

Although Jesus calls us to repentance in the gospel, today’s scriptures are really about joy. The call to repentance is immediately followed by the announcement that the kingdom of God is at hand. The reason for repentance is so that we will be prepared to experience the joys of God’s kingdom. Jesus then calls the apostles to himself and then goes throughout the towns and villages of Galilee, teaching, proclaiming the kingdom and curing the illnesses among the people. He invites us to share his ministry.

What Jesus did for his people in the gospels, he s ll does for us today. Through the power of the Scriptures, we hear the voice of Jesus proclaim the good news; through the power of the sacraments, we receive the grace of God; and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are healed of our sins and made whole (holy).

St. Paul tells us how to live out that grace: to put on the mind of Christ in unity of faith and purpose, working to eliminate divisions among us. So the call to repentance is a call for reconcilia on. We are asked to put aside our egos and our differences for the common good. We are called to build up each other in mutual support and for-giveness. The promise of Christ is that, when we do this, we will see Christ himself and experience the joy of the kingdom.

The School Open House will be held today from 11:30 a.m. –1:00 p.m. All are welcome to come and see the great things our children are doing. We have one of the top schools in the community and are very proud of our teach-ers, staff and families. There will be special blessing for the school personnel this morning at the 10 a.m. Mass. We are very grateful for all the support of our parishioners.

There will be a second collec on today for the Church in La n America. Please see the ar cle on page two.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
