Easter Sunday

In the Acts of the Apostles, St. Peter receives a heavenly vision, instruc ng him to visit the house of Cornelius, a Ro-man centurion. St. Peter realizes that God’s gi of salva on is open to all people; and he begins to tell all those pre-sent of God’s salvific plan in Jesus. He explains that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and power. He was put to death, only to have God raise him from the dead three days later. St. Peter tells them that he himself is a witness of Jesus’ mighty deed. He says that Jesus has been appointed by God to judge the living and the dead; and that all who believe in him will receive forgiveness of sins through him. The Le er of St. Paul to the Colossians encourages the lis-teners to seek a er God, that which is above, reminding them that they have already died and risen with Christ. They have died to their old way of life and are now protected by God as they await Christ’s return, when they too will ap-pear with him in glory. The gospel reading from John tells us that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early in the morning and found it empty. She immediately reports this to Peter and the “disciple who Jesus loved.” The disciples race to the tomb. Peter enters first. Then the beloved disciple enters. Scripture tells us that “he saw and believed.” But Peter and the others “did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Colossians 3:1-4 John 20:1-9

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Alleluia! He is Risen! Rejoice! A er six weeks of Lent, the Alleluia and the Gloria return to the liturgy as we shout out with great joy the good news of salva on. Rejoice! The promise proclaimed on Laetare Sunday three weeks ago is fulfilled today. Christ is risen! Jesus has destroyed the power of sin and death. The promise of Christmas is fulfilled. Christ, who came down from heaven to join our human family, has risen so that we may join the divine family of God. The Lenten journey is complete and we have arrived at the bap smal font of our salva on.

John’s gospel story of the resurrec on is curious in what it does not say. Neither Mary Magdalene nor the Apostles see the Risen Christ. What they witness is an empty tomb. The Beloved Disciple sees the rolled up burial cloths, the absence of the corpse; and he believes. It is only later that the apostles see the Risen Christ and he remains with them, teaching them, strengthening them and leaving them with the Holy Spirit. It is because of the eye-witness accounts of the apostles that we believe that Christ is truly risen. And yet John’s witness of faith is prior to any actual evidence. This is important for us because we all face the same choice. When we see the empty tomb, the absence of any physical evidence of God’s presence in our life, do we choose to believe? The Scriptures, Sun-day mass, the Sacraments and above all, the Eucharist, are given to strengthen us in our mes of doubt. A er the dark of night comes the light of day. A er the doubt of desola on comes the consola on of God’s presence. A er the sadness of death comes the joy of resurrec on.

The Easter Proclama on, usually sung at the Vigil Mass, rings out the wonderful news: Jesus Christ, our King, is risen. Sound the trumpet of salva on! Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever! The Risen savior shines upon you! Rejoice! Exult in glory! The risen Savior shines upon you! Let this place resound with joy, echoing the mighty song of all God’s people! Let these words fill you with joy. Keep these words in your hearts and know the power and glory of God’s love for you. May the joy and blessings of Easter remain with you always.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to publicly celebrate our Holy Week and Easter liturgies. This has ben espe-cially hard on our RCIA Elect, Brian Johnson, Angelito Javier and Berenice Javier. They have been preparing to re-ceive the sacraments of Ini a on at the Ester Vigil and officially become full members of the Church. This celebra-

on has been postponed to an as-yet date to be determined. Please keep them in your prayers.

Due to the extension of the shelter-in-place direc ve un l April 30, we will con nue the suspension of all parish liturgical celebra ons and ac vi es. In order to be prudent, we have decided to postpone the celebra on of the Sacrament of First Holy Communion un l we have a more defini ve idea of when we will be able to resume nor-mal opera ons. Please keep our 44 First Communicants and their families in your prayers. As we get deeper into April, we should have a be er idea about the scheduling of other events, including May Crowning (currently sched-uled for May 8). I know this is difficult for all of us. These are some of my favorite events. I‘d hate to miss them.

Last week I wrote to you about the state of our current financial picture. It hasn’t go en any be er. I encourage all of you to mail in your Sunday and Easter envelopes, drop them off at the rectory through the mail slot when you are out running errands, make regular contribu ons directly from your bank through bill pay or by signing up for Give Central. Give Central has just made this easier. That process is explained in detail on page eight.

Without your con nued support, we will not be able to maintain current opera ons or be prepared to resume nor-mal ac vi es at such me when we are allowed to do so.

Please con nue to follow us on the parish app, the website, the bulle n and e-mail blasts. I will con nue to video my (short) Sunday homilies as well as other reflec ons and updates.

May the blessings of the Risen Christ be with you and your families this Easter and always. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

READING 1ACTS 10:34A, 37-43

CHURCHES RING BELLS TO UNITE IN PRAYER Five times a day, the bells will ring out in the Roman Catholic churches that dot the landscape in the city of Chicago as a call to prayer during the corona-virus crisis. Even if you cannot or do not hear the bells, please say the prayer suggested below. “Our hope is that people will have the experience of being united in prayer, especially at a time when we are so isolated,” said Cardinal Blase Cupich, who heads the third largest archdiocese in the U.S. Beginning Saturday, March 21, the prayers and intentions for each hour of prayer are: 9:00 a.m. PRAYER FOR THOSE INFECTED WITH THE VIRUS AND ALL WHO ARE ILL Lord, place your healing hand on those who suffer illness. Bring them to full health and ease their anxious hearts. May our prayer and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary encourage them that they are not alone. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 12:00 p.m. PRAYER FOR HEALTH CARE WORKERS AND THOSE ATTENDING TO THE SICK Lord, we are ennobled by those who put their lives at risk in caring for the sick. Keep them safe and embolden them when they are weary. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 3:00 p.m. PRAYER FOR FIRST RESPONDERS AND ESSENTIAL WORKERS Lord, we pray for those who run to danger to keep us safe and those who serve the common good. Embrace them with your mantle of protection and comfort the fears of their families. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 6:00 p.m. PRAYER FOR PEOPLE OF EVERY NATION AND THEIR LEADERS Lord, the pandemic opens our eyes to see each other as brothers and sisters in one human family. We pray for people of every nation and their leaders, asking that they be inspired to seek the good of all and quell the voices of division. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN 9:00 p.m. PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED TODAY Lord, we grieve the passing of our sisters and brothers who have died this day. We commend them to your ten-der mercy, confident that nothing, not even death, will separate us from your love. We ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN

Readings 1 Acts 10: 34a, 37-43

Peter proceeded to speak and said: "You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee a er the bap sm that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him a er he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and tes fy that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name."

Colossians 3:1-4 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord Page 7

Gospel John 20:1-18

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning,

while it was s ll dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.

So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,

“They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.”

So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter

and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.

When Simon Peter arrived a er him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,

and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.

Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first,

and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture

that he had to rise from the dead.

Dear Parishioners,

The shelter-in place direc ves have affected all of us. While we are not able to celebrate Mass publicly, we are doing everything we can to provide parish services to you. The cancella on of Mass is leading to significant losses in our offertory income, which is placing all our ministries and opera ons at significant risk. Many people in our parish and community depend upon your regular, weekly offertory contribu ons and, during this current challenge, we need your contribu ons more than ever.

Please consider giving online at https://www.givecentral.org/location/147/event/2797 where you can make Easter contri-bu ons to Saint Robert Bellarmine and keep our vital ministries and services going. Alternately, you can also text-to-give by tex ng the word “Easter” from a smartphone to 847-243-6058. This provides a link directly to the Easter offerings pages in Give Central. You can also scan the QR code provided here.

I am asking you to also maintain your regular weekly dona ons level or even increasing it, if possible, during these difficult mes. Next week we will have the updated links for the regular Sunday offering. Thank you for your support of our parish.

Sincerely,

Fr. Neil

Pope Francis composes a prayer to Our Lady, Health of the Sick, to implore her protec on during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. An English transla on of the Pope’s prayer is below: O Mary, you shine con nuously on our journey as a sign of salva on and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you par cipated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salva on of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feas ng might return a er this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrec on. Amen. We seek refuge under your protec on, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
