Please pray for our sick

Second Sunday of Lent In the Book of Genesis, the Lord instructs Abraham to leave his home and journey to a land that God will show him. He promises to make of his house a great na on, filled with God’s blessings. And Abraham went as the Lord instruct-ed him. St. Paul tells Timothy to bear his share of hardships for the sake of the gospel. He reminds him that God saved us and calls us to a holy life through the grace of Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and brought us life and immortality. St. Ma hew tells the story of the Transfigura on of Jesus, revealing his divine glory. Peter, James and John behold him conversing with Moses and Elijah and are overcome with fear. Jesus tells them not to be afraid. They raise their eyes and see Jesus alone, back to normal. He charges them not to tell of the vision un l a er he is raised from the dead. Genesis 12:1-4a 2 Timothy 1:8b-10 Ma hew 17:1-9

Second Sunday of Lent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we hear the story of the Transfigura on of Jesus on Mt. Tabor. In the context of Lent, the Transfigura on is a sign of hope and encouragement, a promise that God’s grace triumphs over sin and death. Our Lenten pilgrim-age is not simply a journey with Jesus to the Cross, but a journey that takes us through the Cross to the glory of the resurrec on. The story ends with Jesus and the disciples coming down the mountain. Jesus admonishes them to tell no one of the vision un l the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. The disciples do not yet understand Jesus’ mission. He became part of our human family in order to die on the Cross for our redemp on. Just as the mountain top is a symbol of the Kingdom of Heaven, going down the mountain is a symbol of the broken kingdom of our humanity. In last week’s gospel, the devil tempts Jesus to deny his humanity. So, too, here on the mountain Jesus could have denied his humanity and ascended to heaven in his glorified (transfigured) body. He comes down the mountain so that he can assume all of the sin, aliena on and brokenness of our rela onship with God into his body and nail it to the Cross. In his crucifixion, Jesus puts to death the power of sin. His Transfigura on is a foretaste of his resurrec-

on with one crucial difference. In his resurrec on, Jesus glorifies our human nature and makes it possible for us to join him in heaven. Our response is to take up our cross and join him on his human journey through sin and death so that he may raise us up to glory. This is not easy. He gives us signs and miracles and sacraments to give us the vision so that we can carry on. In the first reading, God tells Abraham to leave home and go on a journey to a distant land. This is the spiritual journey into the unknown and dangerous wilderness. God promises Abraham a blessing unto eternity. Abraham trusts God’s word and goes out as the Lord directed him. Jesus trusts God and becomes the sacrament of our salva on. Lent calls us to place our trust in God by seeking true conversion that will allow God to transfigure us into his own divine image, healing our brokenness and restoring our unity with him and with one another. Lent is a time for deeper purification and enlightenment for the candidates (and for us) who are preparing to receive the Easter sacraments. Next Sunday the Church celebrates the First Scrutiny, a rite that asks the Lord to protect them from sin and the temptations of evil. Our parish will cele-brate this Rite with Brian Johnson at the 8 a.m. mass. We had a wonderful celebration of Confirmation on February 21st. Thirty-five of our young people, with fifteen young people from Our Lady of Victory, received the Sacrament from Bishop Bartosic. Thank you to Mary Ellen Casselman, the catechists and volunteers for doing a great job leading them on their faith journey. Our Lenten Almsgiving Appeal for the Orphanage in Haiti wil l be held on March 28-29. Chip Wirth will again be with us to give us an update on the events of the past year. Watch future bulle-tins for further information. Our St. Joseph Dinner and Sweet Table will be held next weekend. The dinner will be Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The Sweet Table will be available after all the weekend masses. The Multi Parish Mission with Fr. Lombardo from Our Lady of the Angels Mission will be held here at St. Robert’s on Monday-Wednesday this week. Please see page six for details. On a personal note, today is my 65th birthday and I registered for Medicare. It seems very odd, since I have no intention of retiring and have no idea where the years went. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

All are Welcome—no weekly commitment required, come when you can.

Stations of the Cross Friday, March 13 at

7:00 PM Only

The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion that of-fers witness to Jesus’ Passion and Death. At each sta-tion we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ Suffering, Death, and Resur-rection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ’s love for us.

Thanks to all the great volunteers who met the Blanket Challenge issued by the Deacons of OLV, St. Constance, St Pascal and St. Robert Bellarmine! Over 40 people from all four parishes, as well as St. Monica and St. Ed’s, gathered to work together in ser-vice for the homeless. Special thanks to the St. Constance Women’s Club for providing hospitality, and St. Pascal’s St. Vincent de Paul Society for blanket delivery. Through their efforts, we collected a total of over 40 hand-made and donated blankets for the homeless.

At home, the expecta on of company can inspire us to clean the house. The same concept is true for the parish. Since SRB host-ed Confirma on this year, some of the ladies from the parish were kind enough to clean Kernaghan Hall. In order to keep things clean, a request has been made for the following items: Sponges, New kitchen towels, Sani zing Wipes and dish soap. If you can help out with a few of these items, it would help keep things looking good. Boxes will be set up in the back of church to collect these items. Thanks
