THE SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

The Three Sacraments of Initiation into the life of Christ are Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Most Catholics are baptized as infants, bringing them into the family of faith at the very beginning of their lives. We baptize as infants be-cause, just as in our human families, the children need to experience love and relationship prior to any intellectual knowledge of faith or family. In the early Church only adults who could make a free decision of faith received the Sac-rament of Baptism. The Sacraments of Initiation were celebrated at the same time: Baptism, for the forgiveness of sins (dying to sin and rising to new life in Christ); Confirmation, to receive the fullness of the grace of the Holy Spirit; and Eucharist, spiritual food on earth as foretaste of the eternal banquet in heaven. The Second Vatican Council restored this ancient practice of receiving adults into the Church, after a suitable period of formation, conferring all three Sacra-ments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. After the conversion of the Emperor Constantine in the fourth century, infant baptism gradually became the norm as entire families, free from the threat of persecution, were brought into the Church together. First Holy Communion was received when the faithful were able to have some understanding of the real pres-ence of Christ and an understanding of both the sacrifice and the communion meal shared by the faithful. It wasn’t until 1907 when Pope Pius X encouraged frequent communion that the “age of reason” was lowered to seven years old. The order of the Sacraments was reversed, and Confirmation got pushed back until one was deemed old enough to “make a decision” for Christ (similar to adult baptism in many Protestant denominations).

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter and the other apostles are brought before the Sanhedrin because they have continued to teach in the name of Jesus, even though the leaders of the Temple had forbidden them to do so. They reply that they must obey God rather than men, proclaiming Jesus to be the Messiah. They are punished and dismissed. The Apostles rejoiced that they had been found worthy to suffer for the sake of Jesus. In his vision of the end-time, St. John sees the multitude gathered around the throne of God, proclaiming: “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing.” The gospel story recounts one of Jesus’ post-Resurrection appearances. The disciples have been fishing all night but haven’t caught anything. Jesus tells them to put their nets into the water and they pull in such a large catch of fish that they couldn’t haul them all. They only recog-nize him when they realize this miraculous catch. After they have breakfast, Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. He asks him three times, and each time Peter responds that he does. And three times Jesus tells him to feed his sheep.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we continue the story of the post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus. These appearances were vital to the early Church in establishing the reality of the Resurrection. Peter and the other disciples have gone fishing, probably because they are uncertain of how to proceed with their mission. The importance of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus becomes apparent when we hear Peter in the Acts of the Apostles boldly proclaiming the Risen Christ compared to his uncertainty in the gospel narrative.

Peter’s proclamation before the Sanhedrin tells the Jewish leaders that Jesus was indeed the Messiah, raised up by God. The leaders do not want to be guilty of shedding Jesus’ blood because it would undermine their authority. But Peter tells them that Jesus was God’s chosen one as leader and savior, to grant repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. He softens the accusation so that they will be open to hear the message and come to see Jesus as the fulfillment of the Messianic expectation. This is the mission given to the apostles, the Great Commission to go out and proclaim the good news. They, and we, are called to preach and teach in the name of Jesus, and to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit for the for-giveness of sins.

In the gospel narrative the apostles have been fishing all night and not caught anything. When Jesus com-mands them to lower their nets in the morning, they are astounded at the large catch of fish. In this miracu-lous catch the disciples recognize the Risen Lord. Jesus feeds them as he continues to feed us. The gospel concludes with Peter’s profession of faith. After the Last Supper Peter denied Christ three times. When he heard the cock crow, he wept bitterly, recognizing his sin. Jesus now redeems him through his questioning. Peter’s triple profession of love for Christ atones for his triple denial. His conversion is complete. Jesus gives Peter the command to feed his sheep, telling him that he, too, will have to lay down his life for his people.

The conversion stories are important for us because they tell us the reality of this personal encounter with Christ that rearranges our whole way of looking at life; in fact, our whole way of being. The great liturgies we celebrated at the Triduum are designed to bring us that same sense of awe that St. John experienced in his Revelation. He sees the great multitude in worship around God’s throne, with the Lamb at the center who shepherds them to the streams of life-giving water. They are the ones who have washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb, indicating that the Christian life can demand everything from us. St. Peter and St. John both remind us that, having experienced the love of Christ, we, too, have been given the power of the Holy Spirit and been strengthened to live out our baptismal grace.

On Friday we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Rassas was with us this year to confirm forty-two of our children, sealing them with the Holy Spirit. Although now fully initiated into the faith, they continue to need our guidance and support. Please keep them, and their families, in your prayers.

Graziano Night to benefit our school is tomorrow (Monday). Graziano’s graciously donates 25% of the total bill of all who identify themselves as SRB parishioners. Please come out to enjoy a good meal and good company. I encourage all our parishioners to patronize Graziano’s in gratitude for their support.

The Sports Association will host the annual Comedy Night this Saturday, April 20, featuring members of the Global Giggles Comedy Show and food from Smokey’s BBQ. This is always a lot of fun. Please join us for a good time with proceeds benefiting our school. See page nine for more information.

Next Sunday, the Liturgical Ministries will host Coffee and Donuts after the masses. There will also be a special Sports Teams Blessing for our student athletes at the 10 a.m. Mass.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Why Does the Church have an “Option for the Poor”?

April 24th 2013

Do you know what our faith teaches about Justice in our world? Throughout our history, the Catholic Church has taken a stand for the poor and vulnerable in socie-ty; but so few people realize that this is an integral part of what it means to be Catholic. Come, find out more about Catholic Social Teaching and join the conversation about how to make it an important reality today.

If you want a chance to ask

some questions and talk

with others about how they

live their faith, then these

Conversations are for you.

COMMUNION MINISTERS NEEDED

Are you a Minister of Care in your parish, and have you considered bringing Commun-

ion to the sick in a hospital setting? Presence Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center is in need of 4-5 vol-unteer Ministers of Care (mandated by Chicago Archdio-cese). The commitment is one time per week; it usually takes about 30 minutes to cover your assigned nursing units. You’ll find it is very rewarding! For information, call Chaplain Bob Shuford, Coordinator of Spiritual Services (773-794-7616).

CONGRATULATIONS TO PARISHIONER BILL FRERE!

On 7 April, Bishop Joseph Perry presided at the Rite of Institution into the Ministry of Reader and welcomed Bill into that ministry at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. He is part of a group of 13 men who took part in the liturgy and became instituted Readers.

At the institution, Bishop Perry charged that Bill Frere be faithful in handing on the Word of God so that it may grow strong in the hearts of His people. Additionally, being an instituted Reader also means “taking on a special office within the Christian community.” Besides proclaiming the word in the liturgical assembly, an instituted reader is responsible for: - instructing children and adults in the faith; - preparing them to receive the sacraments worthily; - bringing the message of salvation to those who have not yet received it. This is an awesome responsibility. But it is part of the continuing discernment process as (insert name of candidate) moves forward on his journey in formation and listens to God’s plan for him in future ministry.

During formation this year, Bill Frere is attending academic courses in the Sacraments of Initiation, Old Testament, Evangelization, Moral Theology, New Testament, Christology, Diaconal Ministry in a Multi-Cultural Church, Homilet-ics II, and more. He also participated in a weekend retreat with his wife Virginia, and a candidates-only retreat prior to his institution as Reader. He participated in a Service to Charity field education experience last summer, and this year engaged in a Service to the Word field education experience. He attends monthly spiritual direction, and is present for numerous formation sessions as he continues his journey as a candidate for the Order of Deacon.

Presently, there are about 500 active deacons in the Archdiocese of Chicago, with 52 men currently in the Institute for Diaconal Studies.

Please keep Bill Frere in your prayers, all candidates who will be instituted as Readers, their wives and families, and all candidates in formation, that they might continue to answer God’s call to serve His Church.
