alumnuS father JaIme ZarSe ordaIned to the PrIeSthood

In 1987 when his first-born child was just a toddler, Bob Zarse knelt before the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus begging God for a son who would become a priest. Bob regularly prayed for such a blessing, frequenting the Stations of the Cross at the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis, Missouri, where the young family lived. A few years before, during their wedding ceremony, Bob and his bride Alicia offered the Prayer of Hannah (1 Sam. 1:10-11) to the Blessed Virgin Mary specifically for the intention of conceiving children with religious vocation.

As their family grew, Bob and Alicia relocated nine times before settling in Overland Park. The young couple worked diligently to create a gentle, loving and faith-filled home devoted to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Zarse Family became a fixture at Prince of Peace parish and school, and continued the children’s education at Saint Thomas Aquinas High School. Four of five siblings are now Saints

alumni: Jaime Zarse, ’05, Josh Zarse, ’08, Jordan Zarse, ’10, and Tessie Zarse, ’12. The youngest, Tommy Zarse, is a current freshman.

Fast-forward about twenty years. During his sophomore year, soccer super-star Jaime Zarse -- on athletic scholarship at Marquette University -- began to realize that his priorities and goals could not be fulfilled by the game of soccer. Jaime moved back to Kansas City, enrolled at UMKC, and a short time later entered Conception Seminary, before continuing his studies at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in St. Louis.

Father Jaime Zarse was ordained into the priesthood of Jesus Christ on May 24, 2014, at his home parish of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Olathe, Kansas. He follows a long line of alumni men and women with religious vocations dating back to the early days of St. Joseph High School in Shawnee. Most recently, Father Vince Huber, Saints class of 2000, was ordained to the priesthood in 2011.

The older Zarse children are or have been exceptional soccer players since their early years. Three earned college soccer scholarships (Jaime, Jordan and Tess), and – according to his dad – Josh, now in law school at Creighton University, was the most qualified. But it was

big-brother Jaime who paved the way. Referred to by Saints soccer head coach Craig Ewing as one of “the finest soccer players in Saint Thomas Aquinas history,” the 2005 STA graduate and Saints Soccer Hall of Famer played an integral part for five state-champion high school and club teams, two of which earned National Top-25 recognition during Jaime’s tenure.

Recalling Father Zarse’s senior season at STA, Coach Ewing said, “Jaime was always a team-first guy who cared greatly about how we did as a team.” He continued, “Jaime was given the Senior Award for his character, dedication and leadership.”

Since he was a young boy, Father Zarse’s parents saw glimpses of a possible religious vocation in Jaime by the way he stood by his convictions and how he treated others. Jaime in particular recalls that at his Confirmation, after just being confirmed, “I was going back to my seat wondering what it would be like to be a priest.” During high school, when Jaime was asked to participate in Project Andrew, a religious-vocation discernment program organized by the Archdiocesan Vocations Office, his

dad asked why he didn’t want to go. When Jaime couldn’t come up with a good reason, he knew where he needed to be.

Bob Zarse recalls Father Brian Schieber, the Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese at the time, encouraging their faith as parents, saying “A religious vocation is like a fishing bobber. No one can squash it down for good; it will just pop back up again. If it is His will, God will not let Jaime go!”

Last spring, when Father Zarse visited Saint Thomas Aquinas just before his ordination, he shared that he was humbled, excited and a little nervous to become a priest. He expressed with genuine humility how much he was looking forward to serving the Church “and the people of God for whom he loves.”

In his first year as a priest, Father Zarse serves as a parochial vicar for the Archdiocese, at Christ the King Parish in Topeka, as a prison chaplain and high school chaplain at Hayden Catholic High School. He says the priesthood is the hardest, most difficult adventure he has ever experienced... and also the most rewarding, exciting and meaningful experience of his life.

Father Zarse’s favorite part of being a high school chaplain is spending time with the students. “I love and respect my students very much. They have

tremendous potential and beautiful hearts. But they need heroes. They need solid, well formed Catholic men and women in their lives to inspire them to heroic virtue.”

Last summer, just a few days after his ordination, Father Zarse realized his dream to visit Rome, accompanied by his father and brother Jordan. “Celebrating Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Chair of Peter, over the Clementine Altar where the bones of St. Peter lie, and with Pope Francis on Pentecost Sunday were the greatest joys of my priesthood to-date.”

Alicia and Bob Zarse are happy to see their newly-ordained son about twice a month, usually when he visits Kansas City at the beginning of the week. “It’s fun to relax together, and we really enjoy visits from other priests or seminarians who like to challenge each other with the teachings of the Bible and Catholic Church.”

Alicia explains that the other Zarse children are extremely proud of

their big brother. She also notes how respectful he is of others. “Kids just love him, even those he’s just met. Jaime is really all about making others feel comfortable.”

In the end, his parents’ prayers for vocations must have worked. During his final summer as a deacon in the seminary, Father Zarse was assigned to none other than the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis where his father, so many years ago, knelt down and humbly asked God for a son who would become a priest. God answered in the magnificent way that only He can.

Father Mitchel Zimmerman, who was chaplain at STA when Father Zarse was a student and Archdiocesan vocations director when Jaime entered the seminary, is now Father Zarse’s ‘boss.’ Working together at Christ the King parish in Topeka, Kansas, the pair of Padre Z’s are affectionately referred to as “ZZ Top”(eka).

“When he preaches, Father Zarse distills the Gospel into something direct and powerful. He is not afraid. People are grateful for him, even when he challenges them.”

Last May, Deacon Jaime Zarse, ‘05, received a pre-ordination blessing from STA students (a.k.a. future parishioners), led by good friend and current Saints chaplain Fr. Daniel Schmitz.

Over 650 guests were welcomed into the Commons, transformed for the evening into a Paris open-air market. Delicious appetizers were served, and a fun dessert auction took place during the cocktail hour. Guests then entered the whimsically decorated gym, enjoying the umbrella covered ceiling and top-hat centerpieces, along with hundreds of beautifully displayed auction items, student entertainment, and delicious food.

SPotlIght on a SaIntAnnie Schugart, class of 2014

Class of 2014 Editor-in-Chief Annie Schugart reflected in her last issue of The Shield, “Do you ever just have those moments when, for a split second, you notice some small and quirky detail that makes you realize just how amazing Saint Thomas Aquinas is?” Annie Schugart’s innovation as a student leader at Saint Thomas Aquinas, and her blossoming journalism career (she is now a staff writer for The Harvard Crimson) make those in her wake realize just how amazing she is.

The now-freshman at Harvard University spent much of her time at Saint Thomas Aquinas promoting and enhancing the success of the Saints, from significant contributions to The Shield newspaper and Pieces magazine to her active participation with the Saints Brigade Band, Varsity Dance Team and Varsity Debate Team.

While in high school, Schugart also repeatedly achieved greatness at the national level, in not just one but in many activities, as:

• Kansas Teen Journalist of the Year• National Journalist of the Year Runner-Up• HyVee Scholar-Athlete of the Week (dance)• U.S. Army All-American Marching Band (flute)• President of the National Teen Council• First Saint to be admitted to Harvard University

Newspaper advisor Matt Hallauer recognized Annie’s unique energy and attention to detail, saying, “If Annie had more time, God knows what she might accomplish.” We’ll be watching and waiting, Annie!
