LITURGY OF THE WORD
Today’s first reading and Gospel show us
just how Jesus moves beyond the
expected to bring about God’s reign. The
first reading establishes the standard
procedure for dealing with lepers and
their disease. Jesus reaches out and
touches the leper, breaking the barriers
established by tradition and in so doing
proclaiming a new era of grace, healing,
and hope. How can we follow his example
in breaking down barriers today?

The Pope’s Encyclical "God is Love"
Pope Benedict XVI says the following words in his encyclical letter “God is
Love”: “In sacramental communion I become one with the Lord, like all the other communicants. As Saint Paul says, “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Cor 10:17). Union with Christ is also union with all those to whom he gives himself. I cannot possess Christ just for myself; I can belong to him only in union with all those who have become, or who will become, his own. … Love of God and love of neighbour are now truly united: God incarnate draws us all to himself. … Here the usual contraposition between worship and ethics simply falls apart. “Worship” itself, Eucharistic communion, includes the reality both of being loved and of loving others in turn. A Eucharist which does not pass over into the concrete practice of love is intrinsically fragmented” (n. 14). These words remind us of our calling to love all our neighbors, born and unborn.
In the Gospel today Jesus moved with pity touched the leper and healed him. Let us pray today for the grace to be generous with our gifts to help those
who are suffering. By your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you indeed put your faith into action as you bring healing to the poor, hungry and weeping.
“Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him.” If the Lord is touching your heart with an invitation towards service in the
consecrated life or priesthood, call the Vocation Office at 718-827-2454, or email: [email protected].

J esus “stretched out his hand [and] touched him.” This was probably the first time the leper had ever been touched. That contact was just as compelling as his cure. The leper perceives in Jesus a compassion, a “pity”; like nothing else, the personal experience of sickness and suffering can make one acutely aware of ther tenderness and goodness of another. Most likely the leper never would have begged Jesus in this way if he had not been afflicted in the first place. “I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble.” The leper presents himself to the Great High Priest who “fills him with the joy of salvation.”

Next week our parishes will take up the 131st
annual Black & Indian Mission collection. Our
support of this mission helps build the Church
in African American, Native American and
Alaska Native communities from coast to
coast. Schools, parish religious education programs and
diocesan ministries depend on your generosity to help
them spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Dear Fr. Paul & Parishioners,
This is a letter of appreciation &
gratitude. It’s also to express our feeling
towards the benevolence of people like yourself.
As we stay sober, we can face almost anything with the help
of others. We are very grateful to you, your team of servers
and community for the generosity, kindness and charity with
which you have treated us every time we have visited your
parishes………..Your example of making a difference serving
others is also an encouragement that we appreciate and
value. For these reasons, our wishes for you are that we pray
to God to keep blessing you and everyone around you, today
and always.
