Respect Life Ministry Accompanying a loved one in his or her last days is enormously important, but we do not need to fear our own limitations. Pope Francis tells

us, “[God] comes to assist us in our weakness. And his help consists in helping us accept his presence and closeness to us. Day after day,

touched by his compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others.”

~USCCB, Caring for Loved Ones at Life’s End, 2018

Respect Life Prayer Intention:

For those nearing the end of life; may God strengthen their faith and comfort them through others’ loving support.

“Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent”

October is Respect Life Month You’re invited to join Catholics nationwide in celebrating Respect Life Month this October

with the message “Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent”! Learn more at www.usccb.org/respectlife and visit the information

table for prayer and educational resources. See the insert for more information.

You are invited!

Respect Life Prayer Services resume on Saturday, October 6th at 8:45am. All are welcome. The service is followed by re-

freshments and fellowship.

From the Pastor

HOLY ANOINTING OF THE SICK This Sacrament is known by several names. Those of riper years will remember when it was called Extreme Unction, because it was the last (extreme) anointing (unction) before a Catholic died. It can still be called this when it is given at the point of death. Sometimes it is call the Last Rites but that really means the Sacrament of Holy Anointing or Extreme Unction with the added prayers for the dying that accompany it. Thus, “Last Rites” really means the Liturgy for the Dying that has the Sacrament as its central and most important element. Perhaps most properly it is called Holy Anointing, since that is the sacred act that consti-tutes the Sacrament. Finally, it is called the Sacrament of the Sick, since that name points to its scriptural basis in the Letter of Saint James. Why do we Catholics consider this to be a true Sacrament? Here is the text from Saint James: “Are there people sick among you? Let them send for the priests of the church, and let the priests pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick persons and the Lord will raise them up. If they have committed any sins, their sins will be forgiven them.” (James 5:14) Saint of the Week 5 October Saint Faustina Kowalska She was born in a small village west of Lodz, Poland on August 25, 1905, the third of ten children. When she was almost twen-ty, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. She was never completely literate. In the 1930’s, Sister Faustina received from the Lord a message of mercy that she was told to spread throughout the world. She wrote and suffered in secret, with only her spiritual director and her superiors aware that anything special was taking place in her life. After her death from tuberculosis in 1938, even her closest associates were amazed as they began to discover what great sufferings and mystical experiences had been given to this sister of theirs, who had always been so cheerful and humble. St. Faustina wrote in her diary that Jesus himself had revealed to her her purpose in life: to spread devotion to the Mercy of God. In Plock on February 22, 1930, Jesus appeared to her as the ‘King of Divine Mercy’, wearing a white garment. His right hand was raised in a sign of blessing and the other was touching his garment at the breast. From beneath the garment came two large rays, one red, the other white, signifying the blood and water of his piercing on the Cross. Acting upon orders she said she had received from Christ, St. Faustina had the famous picture of this vision painted. Her life was a simple expression of the motto of this painting, “Jesus, I trust in you.” She was canonized by Saint John Paul II on 30 April, 2000. Saint Faustina Kowalska, pray for us!

Rosaries Needed: We are looking for about 140 more rosaries for the school. Many of us have rosaries that we’ve gathered through the years. I found a number among my own things and Father Johnson has given us some. If you have an extra rosary that you would be willing to donate to the school for use at morning prayer, we would greatly appreciate it. You can leave them in the sacristy at Saint Stanislaus or the conference room at Good Shepherd. Thank you Miss Willis
