Respect Life Ministry

“If you know someone who had had an abortion, express your sympathy for her loss. Assure her of God’s unconditional love, and encourage

her to seek healing and forgiveness.”

~USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, “Bridges of Mercy for Post-Abortion Healing”

***Please continue to pray each Friday through September 28th. ***

NOVENA FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF HUMAN LIFE: September 14

PRAY: May a change in the U.S. Supreme Court move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law

and welcomed in life.

Our Father…, Hail Mary…, Glory Be…

FAST: Offer a sacrifice for the intention

LEARN: Abortion stops a beating heart.

Abortion advocates usually refer to the human being growing in her/his mother’s womb in dehumanizing terms like “product of

conception” and suggest that most abortions are done before fetal organs are functioning.

Actually, the vast majority are done after the fetal heart has begun beating. A baby’s heart begins to beat at about 21-22 days

after fertilization; that’s at about 3 weeks of development. The vast majority of abortions in the U.S. are done well after this

point.

Learn the facts about Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton at ussb.org. Visit the resource table in the church for more information or

for printouts of the Novena.

Respect Life Prayer Intention:

For those who feel alone in their grief following an abortion; may they deeply experience the Lord’s mercy and healing.

Do you live with the pain of an abortion?

Even though you may feel this could never be understood or forgiven, there is hope in Christ. For help, go to

www.hopeafterabortion.org or call the Project Rachel Hotline of our diocese (508)997-3300. Project Rachel is a

confidential healing ministry for men and women hurting from past abortions.

From the Pastor

HOLY ANOINTING OF THE SICK We have, in the past two years or so, examined the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation in this col-umn. These are, no doubt, the two sacraments we receive most frequently as practicing Catholics. Holy Anointing is, after those two, the Sacrament a priest most often administers, especially if he is a hospital chaplain. It is also one that many people know relatively little about, mainly because when it is received, it is a time of crisis and suffering and it is not easy to focus on the rite. Learning about it now will mean we can enter more fully into it, should the occasion arise when we need it. May God keep us healthy and strong, but by his grace and help, we have his promise of his unfailing presence whenever we fall seriously sick: the Sacrament of Holy Anointing. Saint of the Week 19 September Saint Alonso de Oronzco He was born around 1505 in Oropesa, near Toledo in Spain, where his father was the local governor. Upon hearing the preach-ing of Saint Thomas of Villanova, he felt his call to the Augustinians confirmed. Many times during his novitiate, Alonso felt tempted to leave, but his doubts were always relieved in prayer. He was ordained in 1527 and assigned to the missions of the New World, but he was struck down on the voyage with a bad case of arthritis and forced to return to Spain. In 1554, he was named Imperial Preacher to Charles V in Madrid. Though he could have done otherwise in those surroundings, he chose to live very humbly. He slept on a table, not a bed, and used some dried and twisted vines for a pillow. His cell in the convent of San Felipe Real was next to the door so that he could tend to the poor. Afflicted with scruples, he prayed with abandon and overcame them. Alonso wrote prolifically on spiritual topics. At the end of his life, he wrote his autobiography, in which he reported that Our Lady had appeared to him in a dream and commanded him with one word: “Write!” So he did. In obedience, he wrote a new book about Mary every year. After Alonso’s death in 1591, crowds of the faithful stormed the building where his body lay, des-perate for a relic. Pope Saint John Paul II canonized him in 2001. Saint Alonso de Oronzco, pray for us!
